La la land and pulp fiction…although maybe I should revisit the latter as I watched it a long time ago…but it wasn’t good.

1. Prey

I believe the RT score is in the 90s. Sure, the characters aren't as stupid as they normally are in these movies, but the CGI blew. I mean, I'll watch this movie over and over again instead of Shane Black's godawful The Predator. Come to think of it, I was very much not a fun of the 1987 film, so maybe this entry is the best for that reason LOL

Maybe I need to see it again, but yeah, I was not a fan.

I'm still perplexed that people don't find the Kill Bill movies laughable :rip:

The cinematography was beautiful (the countryside of Italy never looked so picturesque). But, the story was very undercooked and underdeveloped. My biggest issue is I had no idea how the characters felt about each other until the end of the movie. The lack of dialogue between the characters, their cattiness, and no internal monologue (which was apparently a prominent feature in the book) led to a very disorienting experience for me. I remember the scene where Elio and Oliver first do it and the next scene is Oliver asking if Elio is mad at him and Elio rolls his eyes and says no and then walks away. There is implied conflict there and mixed emotions from both sides. It's never expanded upon. Things like this kept happening to the point where I had no idea what was happening. Implicit storytelling is fine, but there's a fine line between being implicit and effectively communicating nothing to the audience.

In terms of atmosphere though, it's a fantastic movie. I'll give it that.

Yeah the screenplay let it down for sure. The novel is a bit hard to adapt due to the monologue aspect, but there could've--and should've--been something there within the script to supplement it. The film's director is a remarkable visual storyteller but it's a constant across all of his films that he frequently puts priority on his visual language rather than ensuring the screenplay is conveying the ideas clearly.

Citizen Kane (so f*cking boring )

Came here to post this one and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one! I agree. I can appreciate it for the groundbreaking techniques used and storytelling, but as a movie, it's a dud!

Parasite wasn't bad but I could not believe the extreme defensiveness of its stans when I said Snowpiercer was better :skull: I think they just got caught up in the hype of its success.

Midsommar was style over substance.

I didn't care for the new Dune.

That Spencer abomination w/ K Stew

An objectively incorrect take. :msmarvel:

Jk gorge you have a right to your experience, but I actually really loved that movie!! I found her performance and the overall presentation (cinematography, directing, editing choices, etc.) to be breathtaking.

OT: Precious was hilariously bad and that won 2 Oscars. My least favorite movie of all time is called The Turin Horse, and it is the most mind-numbingly boring and pointless movie I've ever watched, and it presents itself as though it's some kind of artful, thought-provoking piece of auteur cinema. Vomit inducing. :pukey:

Many of the early Pixar movies don't really do anything for me for some reason. Toy Story 1&2, Monsters Inc and Finding Nemo are all rather average imo. Their first great movie was The Incredibles.

I’ve tried so many times to watch Pulp Fiction and I just don’t get why it is held in such high regard. It’s all style over substance, which in itself can still be good, but Tarantino’s style is basically a cheaper take on French New Wave.

That makes sense. I’ve heard similar comments from people who have also read the book. Maybe narration could have helped to some extent? Or more moments of him writing his thoughts in a diary? Idk, just something to help the audience get where the characters are at internally would have gone a long way.
