I'm not sure about Teddy Bear smashing, like what if they become the new Twice (pre-2019 eras) and rely on Kidz Bop for hits and GP support? :dancehall:

Someone needs to fill that niche

IVE is more successful than SNSD then

They will be. And that is SNSD’s entire legacy - they opened the door for the next generation to be even more successful.

Screaming at this dramatization. Losing either or both of them would not crash the company lbr. :dies:

And as for the rest, HYO is giving loss maker, Yuri can't get beyond mid-tier dramas and...what exactly does Sunny even do these days?

Bossam had amazing ratings and Good Job did really well. Hyoyeon was part of SM’s planned DJ expansion and probably their biggest money maker out of the lot. Sunny doesn’t do anything but radio shows, which is just pure profit (albeit minimal).

Just like the third gen destroyed the second gen commercially as K-Pop rose in global popularity, fourth gen is stomping third gen. BlackPink are no exception.

BlackPink - 5,736,061 Korea + 222,109 Japan (6 years & 6 months)

Aespa - 2,588,049 (2 years & 3 months)

IVE - 2,989,375 Korea + 109,605 Japan (1 year & 2 months)

LE SSERAFIM - 1,416,226 Korean + 256,930 Japan (9 months)

NewJeans - 2,214,731 (7 months)

i can’t even take you seriously.

anyways stayc is coming for 200k uls soon. :giraffe:

Everything I posted was an objective statistic. Not my fault the gays on ATRL are always late and two years behind on the curve.

Anyway, I can’t wait for Cherry Bullet’s return.

Yeah, cause BTS and BP have literally snatched all the records, which are almost impossible for these 4th gen acts to reach, since Kpop in general is not on that level yet or if it will ever be. In short, BTS and BP does not represent where KPOP is globally, since they are also known by most non-Kpop fans these days.

TWICE are a perfect example of where Kpop is globally in general today such as having a huge fanbase, good album sales, being able to have sold out tours globally etc. but still being considered a niché and lacking the same recognition from non-kpop fans such as BTS and BP. And that goes for most other Kpop acts as well. Though I'm specifically talking about success and recognition in the West and not Asia cause that's a complete different story.

I slightly disagree with this. Almost everything is niche these days, even the biggest acts. SZA is breaking Taylor & Adele's records but she is still niches. Bad Bunny's the #1 artist globally but he's still niches. Your average Jane and Joes wouldn't know who they are or even name one song from them. BTS & BP fall into the same category, and they haven't reached the true mainstream yet. The only "mainstream" Kpop act was  Psy with Gangnam Style, and I do think NewJeans 4th gen acts have the potential to become mainstream.

I mean their three hits have been bright but different from one another so far - four if you count Poppy since it’s still growing too

Several points were made :coffee:

Although I doubt 4th gen can break into the mainstream too, have a bigger niche following yes especially for ggs since newjeans is already sprinting in their first year, for bgs I'd be surprised for obvious reasons but never say never :celestial5:

i’m excited for certain people to leave the new jeans fandom because they do nothing but set them up. :penguin:

The k-agriculture and tourism festival circuit is going to eat up both "Teddy Bear" and "Poppy."  They now have 5 songs everyone knows, with half the girls comfortable doing crowd work.  Cha-ching!

Exactly. If you go down the street here in the US and ask about BTS and BP, chances are that the older generation or even the people outside of their own demographic won’t be able to tell who they are, or they’ll just be referred to as “kpop” and that’s it. Having amassed a huge fanbase does not mean you’re a household name with the mainstream GP in the west. And the same thing is true in the East as well.
But I don’t know how much I agree with the 4th gen becoming mainstream, that’s a bit far fetched for now. To truly capture a mass audience, there has to be a genuine interest and exposure in the most mainstream platforms like radio, and if the public responds to that in a bigger scale then we’ll know they’ve truly gone mainstream. And I don’t think any of the 4th gen acts will be able to crack that anytime soon. NewJeans does have some organic interest with the Spotify listeners based on the playlisting they had and that’s a good sign but we might have to wait some time before seeing a larger part of the GP catch up to them (if they keep the momentum going).

it’s honestly crazy how much streaming has changed the pop landscape in the west too tbh. Up until the 10s, almost every superstar like Rihanna, Gaga, Katy, Bieber, Beyoncé, Shakira, Taylor were legit household names and their recognition went beyond just a specific audience, and their hits were multigenerational. Nowadays, it’s like every artist has a niche fanbase and their own separate group of listeners whereas the only such person that came to my mind in the past was Lana Del Rey. Kinda off topic but it’s interesting.

omg the memories! I loved this fruity little band. Their gay ass songs immediately register in my mind as soon as I hear a single note from them. I must have been really, really young but I remember having the biggest crush on Gongchan. Taste! I wonder what they're up to nowadays.

I'm pretty sure only 3 members are left: Gonchan, Sandeul and CNU. Baro and Jinyoung both left the label, Jinyoung is an actor/composer now, not sure about Baro tho. They still post on their group insta a lot and also put out a song last about a year and half ago

They all seem to be on good terms with each other so they might reunite for an anniversary sometime in the future I'm sure! :whistle2:

Too bad one of their member is dating a Woollim sasaeng which is destroying the group's fandom.
