China’s Defense Ministry on Monday defended its shelving of military talks with the United States in protest against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei last week, warning that Washington must bear “serious consequences".

China’s cutting of some of its few communication links with the U.S. military raises the risk of an accidental escalation over Taiwan at a critical moment, according to security analysts and diplomats.

One U.S. official noted that Chinese officials had not responded to calls from senior Pentagon officials amid the tensions last week, but that they did not see this as a formal severing of ties with senior figures

SINGAPORE, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday warned of the scope for miscalculations over tensions in the Taiwan Strait, which he said were unlikely to ease soon amid deep suspicion and limited engagement between the United States and China.

Lee said Singapore would be buffeted by that intense rivalry and tension in the region, which should prepare for a future less peaceful and stable than now

"Around us, a storm is gathering. U.S.-China relations are worsening, with intractable issues, deep suspicions, and limited engagement," Lee said.

"This is unlikely to improve anytime soon. Furthermore, miscalculations or mishaps can easily make things much worse."

War is good for the bottom lines at Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, etc., so US lawmakers want to provoke it.

Ed Markey being the point-man for this trip after progressives rallied behind him to keep Joe Kennedy out of the Senate is nothing short of disgraceful.

They're both normie liberals, but Markey was deemed to be more receptive to progressive priorities while Joe Kennedy III was endorsed by Pelosi. It was an easy choice on its face, but him doing performative stunts like this certainly gives me pause.

I'd certainly support Ayanna Pressley primarying him in 2026 in a heartbeat as a result of this. She's the most conformist member of the Squad, sure, but I don't see her doing anything like this that would literally run the risk of provoking a war with a nuclear superpower.

The last time America went head to head with a big power was in WW2 right? Usually they go against military powers who are much weaker than them.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Amid the tense situation in the Taiwan Strait, the German air force sent fighter jets to Asia for the first time on Tuesday (Aug. 16) to take part in exercises in Australia and will also fly near Taiwan, marking the largest overseas deployment of German military aircraft since WW II

Seems this is a bipartisan issue. Guess John Mearsheimer was right. There is no democratic and republican foreign policy cos there is a consensus. He said America is wasting its time with Russia when it should be preventing the rise of China.

Even the ex-Singaporean foreign minister said that the longer the US waits the stronger China will be and that both countries are prepping for war.

The Biden administration is planning to ask Congress to approve a $1.1 billion arms sale for Taiwan that includes anti-ship missiles and anti-air missiles, Politico reported on Monday, citing sources with knowledge of the weapons package.

The arms package will include 60 AGM-84L Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles worth $355 million, 100 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder tactical air-to-air missiles worth $85.6 million, and a surveillance contract extension for a surveillance radar contract extension.

Once the Biden administration notifies Congress of its intent to make the sale, it starts a review period. Since there is massive bipartisan support for arming Taiwan, the deal will likely be easily approved.

The planned sale comes amid soaring tensions that were sparked by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan at the beginning of August. China responded by launching its largest-ever military exercises around the island. More US delegations visited Taiwan throughout August, and the US sailed two warships through the Taiwan Strait over the weekend.

Since Washington severed diplomatic relations with Taipei in 1979, the US has continued to sell weapons to the island. But those arms sales have increased in recent years, and the US has taken other steps to boost ties with Taiwan as part of its strategy against China.

Last week, Taiwan’s cabinet unveiled a plan to boost military spending by 13.9%. The additional funds will go toward the procurement of new weapons and will pay for Taiwan’s military operations that are being done in response to China’s stepped-up presence around the island, a consequence of Pelosi’s visit.
