Gov Hooka Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 https://www.mintpressnews.com/top-gun-maverick-military-propaganda-official-documents/281077/ Top Gun: Maverick” is a box-office smash, a massive hit with both critics and the public alike. Navy and Air Force units across the country have set up recruitment stalls inside movie halls, hoping to sign up individuals buzzed after watching the high-paced aviation action. But documents obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that the movie was made only after an agreement was signed between Hollywood and the Pentagon, with the Navy insisting on “weav[ing] in” their “key talking points” in exchange for granting the production company extensive access to military hardware. Investigative journalist Tom Secker, author of “National Security Cinema: The Shocking New Evidence of Government Control in Hollywood,” was one of those who obtained the documents. Secker explained that “Top Gun: Maverick” was made with an explicit agenda behind it, telling MintPress: "It’s about rehabilitation of the military’s image in the wake of numerous failed wars. The film also helps foreground human pilots flying an actual combat mission – something very rare in these days of high-altitude airstrikes and drone warfare. It helps distract from all the drone pilots who’ve spoken out about the misery and horror inherent in that job.” The production agreement between the Department of Defense (DoD) and Paramount Pictures is an explicit quid pro quo. In exchange for all manner of technical support and access to military equipment and personnel, the Pentagon was allowed to “[a]ssign a senior staff, post-command Officer to review with public affairs the script’s thematics and weave in key talking points relevant to the aviation community.” In over 100 pages of contracts, the military agreed to allow Paramount access to a mountain of their most expensive hardware in exchange for what amounts to significant editorial control over the content and tone of the movie – an arrangement that is remarkably common in today’s environment. "Therefore, “Top Gun: Maverick” falls in line in promoting a remarkably militaristic society; one that spends almost as much on war as every other nation on Earth combined. Celebrations of militarism are everywhere in the United States, from sporting events to cinemas, feeding into an overwhelming cult of troop worship. The military works exceptionally hard to maintain a positive image and has found a willing collaborator in the entertainment industry. Stahl and Secker’s investigations have found that the Pentagon and CIA have exercised direct control over more than 2,500 films and television shows. These include not only military-based blockbusters like “American Sniper,” “Pearl Harbor” and “A Few Good Men,” but also a host of light entertainment shows like “The Price is Right,” “Teen Idol” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” A decent rule of thumb is that if the title you are watching includes the military or security services, then those institutions will likely be co-producing the work, meaning they themselves decide how they are depicted." Keep in mind the US military budget is nearly 800 billion dollars annually more than the next ten countries combined. A portion of this is allocated towards collaborations with US media to manufacture an image that doesn't necessarily have to praise the military but atleast paint it in enough of a decent light that Americans are complacent with its existence and massive overfunding.
OreGuy Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 And I fear they weren't succcessful as audience say it wasn't as apparent as the first one.
mystery Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 (edited) I mean... wasn't that obvious? The US military wouldn't let the movie extensively use their aircraft and other equipment if they were going to be portrayed in a negative light. The original movie was basically an ad for the military, even more than this one. Also this applies to EVERY movie that includes the US military not just Top Gun, they have complete control in how they are portrayed in Hollywood productions if they are to be involved. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military-entertainment_complex Edited June 24, 2022 by mystery
Pop Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 This was clear as a day. I would rather kms than watch that **** movie.
Buddy Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 We knew. When the original was released, Navy applications rose like 500%
Khal Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 (edited) Yeah, this isn't new and not just this movie either. I remember reading around the time when that Independence Day sequel released that it's normal for the US military to allow access to some of their equipment in exchange for positive spotlight. Happens with comicbook movies too. Edited June 24, 2022 by Khal
diamondsky Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 It’s a 2-hour advertisement for Lockheed Martin. You could not pay me to watch that ****

Communion Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 Not Congress giving them a $800b in funding and them still doing #sponsorships. Defund the military!
Arthoe Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 ....duh. Everything Hollywood does is some sort of propaganda to help Uncle Sam. Every movie, TV show, NYT article is there to manufacture consent from the American public for its government's imperialist ambitions, culture wars etc. That's like... the baseline of how America works. Flood people with flashy images that inspire some good ol patriotic rant, so that the general public doesn't feel bad about nuking Iraq (for example).

Interesting source you have there.
Gov Hooka Posted June 24, 2022 Author Posted June 24, 2022 The kicker is that many will say that they know this is propaganda and that this doesn't work on them but then go ahead and blindly support Pentagon narratives on all "enemy" states of the US or that the US is somehow a nation that doesn't indoctrinate its population as much as... say Russia or China.... 800 billion dollars a year and no real backlash (progressives like Bernie Sanders and AOC voting to approve increases in funding) from the people shows that they are just fine with it

Collaboration between Hollywood and the military is nothing new. The Department of Defense has long had an arrangement that, if a producer wants to feature actual U.S. military equipment in their film, the department will provide them funding and resources in exchange for following strict regulations on how the military is portrayed. This is often connected to some sort of recruitment campaign. Air Force Thunderbird planes performed a flyover for Captain Marvel's Hollywood premiere. In multiplexes, the film is preceded by a new Air Force recruitment ad titled "Origin Story." While not directly referencing the movie, the ad's intentions could not be clearer. This is a specific drive to recruit young women who are fans of superhero movies. CBR: The MCU's Relationship With the Military, From Iron Man to Captain Marvel The Guardian: Is WandaVision ... Mintpress is just a secondary news source reporting what is officially being reported. But also not suprised that the very same people calling mintpress disinformation and antisemitic somehow seem to be linked to orgs that lobby hard for israel and individuals with ties to the Atlantic Council. Funny how that works out...
Orsay Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 We know the US military is evil Gaga's presence/non-presence on some track in a movie will not change that if thats what you're trying to imply, Government Hooo-oo-kaaah-aaahhh
Brishka Posted June 24, 2022 Posted June 24, 2022 God bless the U.S. military-industrial complex. I'm glad Top Gun Maverick is smashing.

The source is actually the first-hand source aka the literal production agreement. Though ironically you went the extra mile to show the media illiteracy of liberalism since you missed the irony of citing a Wikipedia article that references a LA Times article that quotes Rutgers' "Network Contagion Research Institute" which works in association with the Koch Foundation and whose founders argue - 1) Critical Race Theory and Social Justice are "antisemitic movements" for arguing some Jews can be white-passing 2) That "far-left movements have resulted in violence akin to violent racist movements" to which they got panned for their poor data algorithms and analysis: Not sure I'll be taking lessons on anti-semitism from "social justice is antisemitism" liberals! Thanks! Edited June 24, 2022 by Communion
