tiagol88 Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 Me expecting Madonna to be freefalling by now...but it's actually increasing the most and about to reach 22M If the remix album has some nice feats and doesn't take too long she's surpassing Britney for sure.

Erreur2 La Nature Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 Great list tbh. Beyoncé debuted in 2003 though.
stevyy Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 It's unfair to group Madonna with all those 1999 / 2003 acts... There IS a difference between debuting in the early 1980s and 1999 /2003.

But I hate the notion that someone who debuted in 1999 is not part of the digital era... or far removed from it. To put things into context... Itunes started in 2003 and exploded in 2006/7, peaked in 2011-12. Itunes was launched 20 years into Madonna's career... 4 years into Britney's, JLo's. How they are remotely the same or share a common timeline is beyond me. Shakira is the closest to Madonna and even she is 10 years or 9 years after her. Madonna is very, VERY unqiue in being this 80s legend who is still relevant in 2022. Her stats are outstanding.
Rev8 Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 Love them girls but ya, Beyonce did debut in 2003 so it's always odd to see her in Pre-00s lists

Nobody thinks she debuted with Britney/Shakira/Bey.

swissman Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 Nitpicking whether or not Beyoncé, as the lead singer of Destiny's Child, was an artist in the 1990s doesn't really achieve much because I doubt if we said "pre-2004 artists" this list would change very much. But Beyoncé very much was an artist before the 2000s, or did she as an artist not exist at all in the 1990s? Was her artistry, her voice, her image, songs she wrote or co-wrote not known by millions of people? And by that same token did Diana Ross not exist in the 1960s? And as stated above, she began working as a solo artist (credited under the name Beyoncé, not Destiny's Child) before the 2000s, thus any nitpicking is automatically incorrect.
dabunique Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 Exactly y’all acting like in da 90’s I didnt kno who Beyoncé was. OT yeah Madonna almost 22 million

stevyy Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 First albums by the females in the OP. 27th July 1983 - Madonna - Madonna 24th June 1991 - Magia - Shakira 12th January 1999 - Baby One More Time - Britney Spears 1st June 1999 - On The 6 - Jennifer Lopez 20th June 2003 - Dangerously in Love - Beyoncé There are almost 20 years between Madonna and Beyoncé, but somehow they belong to the same era.

Does singer doing work as a solo artist not exist until they have their own album though? By that logic, Normani didn't exist as an artist until lat year. Lil Nas X didn't exist until last year when his lead single came out, Diana Ross didn't exist as an artist until 1970... I get your point. I get that you want to exclude her from this list because "technically" her own lead single/first album was in 2003 but do you really think the list would look all that different if we said it was for artists pre-2004?
stevyy Posted April 17, 2022 Posted April 17, 2022 The thing is that Madonna never gets the credit she deserves... as ... .- the biggest female physical albums and singles artist of all times .- ONE of the biggest female digital acts of all times. .- ONE of the biggest female streaming acts of all times. The endurance is unmatched. Whoever our favs are... nobody compares to that. The closest there are, are the ever mentioned whose names I've just forgotten... but one starts with a W, another one with a M and another one with a C. The OP makes her look like one of many... when she in facts stands alone in all of her records and achievements.

Destiny's Child released two entire albums in the 1990s though. Whether to not she was "solo" at the time, she was indeed a working artist in the music industry with her lead vocals on multiple hits. To say she is not an artist from before the 2000s only works if you are using technicalities, and if we are using technicalities, then even without Destiny's Child, she was recording music under the name Beyoncé in the 1990s for movie soundtracks and as featured guests on others' albums. I get the desire here to remove her, but as stated, would the list look much different if we said pre-2004 artists? As for Madonna being here, saying "pre-2000s" doesn't mean anyone mentioned is from the same generation, it just means before the 2000s. Her inclusion here with artists who all started somewhere in the 1990s is just a testament to her power and lasting popularity.
