People today especially the American ones don't know how popular euro pop groups used to be in asia. That's why SM used to work with a lot of European producers before.

From the choreographies, the mvs sets,the aesthetic, the hairstyle,the braids etc. SM was clearly inspired by black groups. 

 

Even DCT who is a pop song still incorporated hip hop.

Remember that time UMG teamed up with an actor/drama agency and avant garde k-r&b producers to create a group that had TLC mentioned in their elevator pitch?

 

 

Not sure what TLC had in common with avant garde k-r&b production.  Would've been better off with generic boy group tunes, but whatever.
