BurnGoesTheChivas Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 (edited) A lil review of the album: Spoiler Masterpiece tier: Magic Chemistry Lighthouse Skip This Part I really have nothing to add for these songs, they are flawless and career highlights. Stunning tier: Mine - I absolutely love this song, I think it perfectly represents the emotional spiraling yet numbness someone goes through when experiencing a breakup, a stunning body of work. Every musical choice is intentional and effective. Much love for this song. Down To You - THE uptempo of the album, should have been the lead single imo. Although I adore Mine, I think this song serves a punch that no other track on this album does. It's sassy, catchy, fun - all the things. I Hate Love - still an absolute classic. The How I Feel of the album, except catchy. High Road - the production on this blew me away, Jason is a legend. I already liked the original, but it was only "cute" and Kelly completely transformed the song into something so great. Good tier: Me - it is a cute vocal performance, which I love, but it doesn't really stand out when compared to the rest of the album. Rock Hudson - this was one of the songs I looked forward to the most based on the snippet which was floating around a while ago. However, I was a bit disappointed by the chorus and the odd rhythm of the verses. After a few listens, I actually like it a lot. I wish she did something more vocally with the very end of the song instead of simply repeating the bridge again without any variation. I like the production, wish the guitar was more prominent in the end. "It's a song i guess" tier: My Mistake - NOT a bad song. I think the chorus is superb and could make a brilliant song. Yet, the verses and pre-chorus, especially, drag the song down imo, so I just end up being bored while listening to it. The bridge slaps tho. Bad/tragic tier: Red Flag Collector - the song sounds like it was recorded underwater, and the chorus sounds like an early 2010s cheap demo that's circling around every pop producer and no one wants to record it. Favorite Kind of High - I think it's a bit unfair to put this in the same category as RFC because this one is tragic. So, we have the verses, a bridge and a pre-chorus... great! The song sounds unfinished and completely uneventful, I am in shock people cited this as their Belasco highlight because it is easily the worst song on the record. Also, if you want to highlight an uptempo - DTY is RIGHT THERE. Its own iconic universe of utter confusion: That's Right - I don't know what this is, but I love it lmao Overall, what a project! A complete career highlight, in my opinion. Not gonna get brave and rank it among the other albums, but it is definitely above PBP and her bad ones (Grateful, AINW, Flopper). One thing in particular that I like about this record are the BGVs, they are stunning and complex (Magic, pre-chorus of Lighthouse, Chemistry are some highlights, but most of the tracks are stunning). Also, it is a bit confusing to me because RFC, IHL, FKOH and TR don't match the rest of the album sonically. At all. Maybe binning RFC, FKOH and keeping IHL as the last track with TR as a hidden track would've worked?? Idk. Overall, a stunning record. Edited June 19, 2023 by BurnGoesTheChivas 1 2

BravoTangoWhiskey Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Spoiler Happiness doesn’t mean smile when it’s a scene, you kept me happy enough to keep me in between Spoiler Although I do wish the end went round one more time on the chorus

I think Skip This Part, Lighthouse, Mine, Magic, Chemistry and That’s Right are all different and strong tracks that shows artistic growth and maturity. I’m worried that songs like Red Flag Collector and I Hate Love pull down the impression of the album. We’ll have to wait and see! 1

Julianna Calm Down Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Just checked MC, and for reference - her highest ranked album is MOL and WIR at 73, followed by AIEW at 70. Breakaway is not on there for some reason. I’m hoping 75 for chemistry.
Admiral Bobbery Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 When it comes to MFKOH, the production and instrumentation let it down. It's catchy enough, but the song desperately wants to be a euphoric dance number and instead sounds like watered down AC radio fodder. Not a bad song, I see why people who love it, love it. But to me, it's wasted potential. 1
xDiamondx Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 3 hours ago, Bloo said: FKOH is not disliked because it isn't lyrically on par with Sober or Because of You. I think most people think it fell short of being a euphoric dance number it could have been. The chorus, to me, feels like a prechorus. If it had some instrumental breakdown that tries to capture how the "high" feels in sound, that would have greatly elevated the song. As is, it feels very one-note and forgettable. If you enjoy it, that's fine. But people are also allowed to express their dislike of it. Part of the era is people sharing their unfiltered thoughts on the music and that includes criticism. Remember when the base hated Move You when MOL came out back in 2017? It's all part of experiencing an era. As the person who 100% loves FKOH, I have to agree. Especially after the high notes of "I wanna feel you", it just abruptly ends after 20 seconds.
Cupid Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 yall are writing way too many think-pieces on FKOH nothing is gonna be a hit single, but it has the best shot, not saying that as a fan of the song but its cute, it's the most gp friendly for summer 1

Maybe if it were 2014. But the sound FKOH is going for is basically a decade too late. I agree nothing is going to be a hit (which is why I generally do not care to discuss hits or singles because… seems worthless). But, the main thing this era has going for it is the fact that it is her divorce album and a divorce song could take off. FKOH has no elements tied to her divorce. It’s a basic pop song that a million other artists could do. A personal sentiment could set possibly set Kelly up for a random blow up moment like with PBP. But, FKOH doesn’t have that in any capacity. I could see RH taking off much sooner than FKOH simply because it’s part of the trilogy with BOY and PBP. It would be easily to get into the public ether with Kelly doing a medley performance of the three songs or something to that effect.

I mean, I can't see a mid-tempo 2nd single during summer working - for an artist like Kelly who goes the more traditional route. The first single was the time to strike with a divorce anthem, that's where all the hype was. The GP aren't checking for a 2nd single so it doesn't really matter what the message behind the song is, it just needs to get airplay and streams and get out there. We need a sad song for fall, when she can start doing promo again with it, that's when something will take off (if anything will at all) but right now the best we can hope for is one of the promo songs taking off or a fluke. 1
KevinKDC Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 FKOH is three steps back and should’ve been an ugly dolls track. It’s one of the most generic songs she ever recorded and would’ve been an acceptable track in 2009. Just like “I had a dream” I deleted the song of the album. For me the song doesn’t exist anymore. 2 1

It’s a bit paradoxical to in one breath say hits aren’t happening because the GP are not checking for Kelly regardless and then argue what the GP will or will not care for from Kelly, no? Like, which is it? Do they care at all or do they only care for certain things from her? The generic strategies for Kelly that both RCA and Atlantic thought would make for hits failed with both the PBP era and the MOL era. Obviously the “tried and true” strategy means next to nothing. 1

My thoughts exactly. FKOH isn't my favorite song on the album but it has potential to get people steaming this summer. To me, the another great option for a second single would be down to you. for the fall, I could see lighthouse. It's a beautiful and honest song. It shows maturity in her writing and her vocals are gorgeous. I also thinks it's a very relatable message (unfortunately).

Think we might look at a 45K - 55K and a top 10 debut. Which is still respectable for being 20 years in the music industry and without a hit single.
