Lol. 4 and its elevator music and marching band music was cute but it's not a B'Day. Is anyone honestly going to say they use Best Thing I Never Had, I Was Here, Start Over, Run the World? 4 was majorly enhanced by its deluxe. B'Day didn't even need a deluxe to be it

I use start over and BTINH, both are definitely better than flawed and drawl, ring the alarm, and resentment.

Countdown alone clears all of B'day

If Beyonce put out Freakum Dress today, she probably would've named it F*ck him Dress lol.

It's crazy how things change. I remember people were mad she smoked a cigarette on the B'day cover and bent down touching Jay's belt buckle. They really thought she was not a woman who could have fun. Her personality was shining through in B'Day from cussing in Irreplaceable to subtly  talking about  sex on Suga Mama, Get me Bodied, Freakum Dress, comparing herself to MLK then telling him he can go, he has the green light, telling him his sex ain't all that on Kitty Kat, then Resentment. The album was full of shade. Creole, Back Up, Lost yo Mind wouldve definitely made the album if Mathew was not there.

Then, there's the beauty and vulnerability  of songs like Flaws and All, Listen.

I said it once and I'll say it again, the people who place B'day over 4 ALWAYS have the worst opinions in here...

So if you find yourself agreeing, get your ears checked, you may have hearing loss from B'days poor mixing

:suburban:

They're often interchangeable tbh. But yes 4 definitely sounds more timeless.

Sure, those songs sans RTW are elevator music but the album comes along with Countdown (!!!) , Schooling Life(!!!), 1+1 (!!!) End Of Time, Love On Top and I Miss You. The highs are so high.

B'Day standard also has Resentment which is not great tbh. But its true that it's standard edition is more balanced and has really no filler (although personally I don't enjoy Resent and RTA) but the highs except Kitty Kat do not reach Countdown's marvelousness.

It balances. During B'Day, she was really in her Prince's bag. She could have cut a bigger check for mixing though, that's a fact.

CC is top 3 in her discography despite II Least Wanted on it. Just For Fun and the last 10 tracks make up for it though.

How could you listen to American Requiem, 16 Carriages, Bodyguard, Daughter, Alligator Tears, Just For Fun, Ya Ya, Riverdance, Flamenco, SHB and think they're bad though?

Resentment  is one of my favorites from the album-such a sad closing to the high of Deja Vu when she's still crazy in love. The mixing was supposed to be retro on songs like Resentment to fit with the old school theme.  The South is really good at storytelling and B'day was a storytelling album. Tracks 1-10 told a story from a woman in love to out of love by the end of the album. It actually could've been titled Dangerously out of Love  and it would've made sense

Prince called out Timberlake for FS/LS which came out the same year  so he definitely would've been petty enough to say something but I think he loved B'Day

The highs are high on 4, and the instrumentals are beautiful especially songs like Rather die Young or I Miss you but the ambient/alternative pop and R&B  vibe mixed with the marching band/afro beat and dancehall made  it lack  the consistency of a track list that gels all together on a dancefloor like B'day or Renaissance.

4 also has some haphazard track list that was redone and is now the standard version. It was better the way it was originally starting off with 1+1.  I also take points off for Lay Up Under Me being unavailable to stream because that's one of her best tracks. 4 is the only album I have to listen to the live versions not the album anymore. 1+1   live is way better than the album versions.

1. B'Day  is first.

My rankings always change for everything else so Im not going to bother

Right now Renaissance is number 2.

Cowboy Carter is fighting for top 5, but to be honest, I even prefer The Gift over Cowboy Carter

I agree about the original edition of 4, that's the only one I can listen to. It's still on Spotify, you have to click at the bottom "other releases" to select that version.

And yes I think Prince loved B'Day, after all it's very him. He even used/covered Suga Mama on his show.
