ATRL Moderator Element Posted January 24, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted January 24, 2022 Castaways, welcome to the fourth challenge of Survivor: ATRL Edition (Season 12)! Tribal immunity is back up for grabs... ONE tribe will win, while the other two will be going to tribal council. The highest scorer on each tribe will also receive immunity. Let’s get started! The theme for Round 4 is... Help Me Be A Good Wife "Wake him up nice and slow, bring him coffee in bed..." This round, we are looking for songs that reflect on how to be a good partner in marriage. The lyrics should take us through specific actions of what the narrator believes will contribute to being a successful husband/wife. This could range from big actions like listening to your spouse's problems and giving them advice... to the little things like bringing them food, etc. Just make sure it's clear that this is a life-long partnership. Not a fling. (NOTE: the gender does not matter here!!) _________________ What To Do: Once your song is selected, PM both of the hosts the artist and title of your song on Discord in our group DM. You don't have to include a link to the song unless you are sending a specific version of it. There's no explanation needed as your song should speak for itself. If your song requires an explanation to make sense, it's not a good fit. You guys are bound to submit the same songs at some point and because no one can occupy the same song, we encourage you to send a back-up choice along with your first pick. This applies especially to those who are not around when a round is posted and don't have the luxury of choosing an instant track. IMPORTANT NOTE: ONCE YOU SEND A SONG THAT IS AVAILABLE, YOUR CHOICE IS LOCKED AND YOU MAY NOT SWITCH. AGAIN, YOU CANNOT SWITCH SONGS. IF SOMEONE TAKES YOUR SONG FIRST, THAT IS WHEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SUBMIT A NEW ONE, SO PLEASE SUBMIT A BACK-UP. Take Into Consideration: The panel will judge the audio/lyrics of the track you submit. Music videos will not increase or decrease your score as some music video plots differ from a song's true meaning. The theme is what is important here. You will not receive a low score because you sent in a song one of the judges does not like. Taste will at the most be the difference between an 8.5 or a 9. We will never dock off multiple points based off mere preference. The song you choose should display the meaning upfront. An interview with your artist clarifying the meaning of the song will not be taken into consideration. Judging Scale (May Vary By Judge): 9/10 – Great entry. Track displays the theme given head on. 8 – Good entry. Displays theme well but not as well as others. 7 – Okay entry. Fits decently but is missing something overall. 6 – Somewhat tackles the theme but falls flat. 5 – Track mentions theme but is otherwise off–base. 3/4 – Song does not hit the theme given besides a line or two. 1/2 – Song has to do with a completely different subject than the theme. _________________ We will supply an example for each round for you all to take inspiration from. Obviously no one can select this song as their entry. The example for this round is "Good Wife" by Kacey Musgraves. One of the most striking songs from Kacey's divorce album, "Good Wife" takes us back to the start of her ill-fated marriage. She enumerates various ways that she thought she was acting like a great marital partner. This included gently waking her husband up in the mornings, listening to his problems, smoking together, physical touch, etc. She yearned to do all the right things to make their relationship work long-term. _______________________________________________________ The tribe with the highest average scores will be safe this round, meaning that the two losing tribes will attend tribal council. Remember that the highest scoring member of each losing tribe will be immune at tribal council. Your song submissions are due in 23.5 hours (8 PM ET) on Monday, January 24th. Good luck and please let the hosts know if you have any questions! rl231 Posted January 26, 2022 Author Posted January 26, 2022 Red Light The Cab - Endlessly Ampersand13 Case - Happily Ever After Samsom Clint Black - When I Said I Do Armani Tony! Toni! Toné! - Anniversary DAP Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm (from How to Succeed…) TruGemini Kenny Lattimore - For You The Cab - Endlessly Auburn - 6 - There’s a bit there, but it’s very strong compared to some of the other entries here. Gateau - 5 - yall really need to know the difference between typical love song and what we are looking for here Luckystrike - 5 - Hm, no. Too vague. I guess the marriage part is slightly there. Supaspaz - 6 - It’s not really clear to me how he plans to be a good partner to the woman he wants to marry, other than working every day to try and buy her a house. Case - Happily Ever After Auburn - 7 - Strong marriage and love vibes, medium good partner vibes. Gateau - 6 - nails the commitment part but does not mention really what it means to be a good partner in specifics and details Luckystrike - 5 - Exactly what supaspaz said but with one point less. It’s just a love song about marriage. Supaspaz - 6 - Another entry that’s more of a love song revolving around marriage than an exploration of what that commitment means. Clint Black - When I Said I Do Auburn - 6.5 - Blargh tell us what makes you GOOD at loving someone. Hate men. Gateau - 7 - mentions the marriage aspect, talks a little bit about what makes a good partner, but not thatttt much. Luckystrike - 5.5 - Again, just a love song revolving around marriage. Giving you an extra .5 because at least there’s one line where he claims faithfulness, but that’s about it. Supaspaz - 6 - I suppose that a husband doing the absolute least (“Be faithful and true, devoted to you”) and thinking it’s enough is a fair representation of heterosexual male culture. Tony! Toni! Toné! - Anniversary Auburn - 3.5 - A few points because this is indeed one specific thing that might help, but that’s about it. Gateau - 2 - ur so random!!!!! Luckystrike - 2 - I might be absolutely wrong, BUT I think this song might be… you won’t believe this… about their anniversary?!?! So crazy right? Anyway, there’s no correlation to the theme for me at all, sorry. Supaspaz - 3 - Wait, is it their anniversary? This selection, unfortunately, has only the most tangential connection to the question of what it takes to be a good partner. Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm (from How to Succeed…) Auburn - 9 - I’m sensing a pattern here… anyway, adequate enough. Gateau - 9 - “he’ll do well, I can tell” okay pop off proto-Lana Luckystrike - 9 - Well, very concerning that this has been the most fitting song of the tribe so far. Thanks for not choosing another 8 minute long musical act this time and keeping it short. Supaspaz - 10 - Funny how the song that’s actually from the “Mad Men” era is the only one to actually present those antiquated gender roles ironically. Kenny Lattimore - For You Auburn - 8 - Yeah it needed to be more specific about his actions, but it’s in the better half of the songs here I think. Album cover is making me scream though adfgkshfgsj Gateau - 10 - right on the money. In every way. Go off !!!!! Luckystrike - 7 - It’s fine, it gets the job done, not as specific as others but not as vague as others. Supaspaz - 8 - Another man who thinks he’s really doing something for his woman by, you know, feeling his feelings.
rl231 Posted January 26, 2022 Author Posted January 26, 2022 Acetone Ingrid Michaelson - The Way I Am Opulent Anquette - I Will Always Be There for You Harmonizer Jessica Simpson - With You Golden Hour Dan + Shay - From the Ground Up VenusFlyTrap Shania Twain - From This Moment On Eros Bleachers - Let's Get Married Ingrid Michaelson - The Way I Am Auburn - 10 - I fear the rest of the round will be downhill from here. A classic, too. Gateau - 8.5 - This doesnt really SCREAM marriage to me. EVerything else is on point though. Luckystrike - 10 - Don’t think I have anything negative to point out, I was originally going to give this a 9 because I needed a little extra something more specific to relate it a bit more to marriage and then the last verse came and that was about enough for me, good job! Supaspaz - 10 - If partnership is about the little things, then this hits all the marks. Though it’s not explicitly about marriage, by the time the song gets to the Rogaine verse, it’s clear that Ingrid is making a lifelong commitment. Anquette - I Will Always Be There for You Auburn - 5.5 - It’s just not specific enough for me to get on board, but mediocrely attempts the theme so it’s not completely hopeless. Gateau - 6 - I don’t feel like you QUITE understood the assignment because this comes off as a very typical song. I mean you really could have sent in any old thing and got a 5-6 score with lyrics like this. Luckystrike - 5 - I’m afraid this barely even correlates to marriage, it feels like a standard love song to me. Of course she mentions “forever” and the intent for it to be something lifelong, which is why I’m not giving you a lower score, but it’s just extremely vague, there’s nothing else in it that makes me relate it to marriage. Supaspaz - 5 - Far too general to make an impact with this theme. The narrator will always be there for her partner…in what way? Jessica Simpson - With You Auburn - 5 - It’s not particularly strong, but there are some hints of the theme here and there. If my score was entirely based on personal taste though, 10/10! Gateau - 3 - I’m not sure what this has to do with anything?????????????? Out of all songs you chose this one?? Luckystrike - 4 - A cheesy love song that a 16 year old girl would dedicate to her 19 year old boyfriend in high school. Nothing about this tells me it will be something lifelong/gives me marriage vibes, again, it’s just a love song. Supaspaz - 6.5 - You were on the right track, but didn’t quite get there. Aside from a few things that Jessica mentions make her feel particularly supported in this relationship (“I can let my hair down/I can say anything crazy/I know you'll catch me right before I hit the ground”), it’s more of a love song. Dan + Shay - From the Ground Up Auburn - 10 - I think it fits perfectly! Gateau - 8.5 - I don’t feel like this really goes into too much detail about what one person will do for the other, but the marriage part itself is there. Luckystrike - 10 - This was quite lovely and worked like a charm for me, I think you nailed the theme quite well, congrats! Supaspaz - 8 - It started so strong with the first verse, which makes it seem like this is going to be a song about the secrets to his grandparents’ long and happy marriage. But the rest of it didn’t live up to that promise. Shania Twain - From This Moment On Auburn - 5 - Honestly, there’s nothing really specific here about the actions being put into the relationship beyond loving each other forever. Queen though! Gateau - 9 - This is like…. Bomb for me? She doesn’t go into TOO much detail about what she’ll do to be a good partner but she definitely says several things. “From this moment on” is basically a series of vows so the marriage part is smack dab there. GJ. Luckystrike - 7.5 - It definitely works for the marriage part of the theme, but I feel like it becomes a bit too much of just a standard love song towards the end. I do think there are some parts that work nicely for the theme though, since the marriage part comes with the nature of the song, so I don’t think it’s a bad entry overall. Supaspaz - 4 - It’s definitely a first dance anthem for the pumpkin spice latte set, but the narrator isn’t looking any further into the future than the end of the aisle. Bleachers - Let's Get Married Auburn - 8.5 - Not bad, but not completely amazing. Definitely some actionable things described that would improve a long-term relationship. Gateau - 9.5 - Very on the nose and does just about everything the prompt asks for, however my beef is that the lyrics also go into like… other unnecessary tangents I could do without. Luckystrike - 6 - Hm. Feels like I just heard him sing “let’s get married” for 3 minutes straight, which is not too convincing. I didn’t gather many specific lines that relate to the theme very much, but I guess it ain’t too bad. Supaspaz - 7.5 - Sort of a strange selection, because it’s more about wanting to escape loneliness than it is a romantic declaration to the one you love. On the surface, however, it certainly engages with the notion of bettering oneself to be a better partner.
