Castaways, welcome to the second challenge of Survivor: ATRL Edition (Season 12)!

Tribal immunity is back up for grabs... ONE tribe will win, while the other TWO will be going to tribal council.

The highest scorer on each tribe will also receive immunity. Let’s get started!

The theme for Round 2 is...

God, It's Brutal Out Here

"Where's my ******* teenage dream?"

This round, we are looking songs that talk about teenage angst. We want laments about the challenges, frustrations, and disappointments of our adolescent years. Be careful: these are NOT breakup songs. We are looking for songs that speak about teenage problems in general terms: some ideas include pressures from school, parents, learning to drive, taking on more responsibilities, anxiety, etc. It just has to be very apparent that the artist is expressing frustration about the struggles of one's teenage years! They aren't as "dream"-like as Katy Perry once claimed.

What To Do:
Once your song is selected, PM both of the hosts the artist and title of your song on Discord in our group DM. You don't have to include a link to the song unless you are sending a specific version of it. There's no explanation needed as your song should speak for itself. If your song requires an explanation to make sense, it's not a good fit.

You guys are bound to submit the same songs at some point and because no one can occupy the same song, we encourage you to send a back-up choice along with your first pick. This applies especially to those who are not around when a round is posted and don't have the luxury of choosing an instant track.

IMPORTANT NOTE: ONCE YOU SEND A SONG THAT IS AVAILABLE, YOUR CHOICE IS LOCKED AND YOU MAY NOT SWITCH. AGAIN, YOU CANNOT SWITCH SONGS. IF SOMEONE TAKES YOUR SONG FIRST, THAT IS WHEN YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SUBMIT A NEW ONE, SO PLEASE SUBMIT A BACK-UP.

Take Into Consideration:
The panel will judge the audio/lyrics of the track you submit. Music videos will not increase or decrease your score as some music video plots differ from a song's true meaning.

The theme is what is important here. You will not receive a low score because you sent in a song one of the judges does not like. Taste will at the most be the difference between an 8.5 or a 9. We will never dock off multiple points based off mere preference.

The song you choose should display the meaning upfront. An interview with your artist clarifying the meaning of the song will not be taken into consideration.

Judging Scale (May Vary By Judge):
9/10 – Great entry. Track displays the theme given head on.
8 – Good entry. Displays theme well but not as well as others.
7 – Okay entry. Fits decently but is missing something overall.
6 – Somewhat tackles the theme but falls flat.
5 – Track mentions theme but is otherwise off–base.
3/4 – Song does not hit the theme given besides a line or two.
1/2 – Song has to do with a completely different subject than the theme.

_________________

We will supply an example for each round for you all to take inspiration from. Obviously no one can select this song as their entry.

The example for this round is "Brutal" by Olivia Rodrigo.

In the first track on her debut album Sour, Gen Z's main pop girl takes us on a journey of teenage angst. She highlights specific examples of why she feels frustration about her adolescent experience: insecurity, anxiety, few friends, societal pressures, and not being able to parallel park. With all of this stress encircling her, she laments how she can not enjoy her youth. These are supposed to be the golden years, she thought... but the reality is that there's just too many challenges and disappointments as a teenager.

_______________________________________________________

The tribe with the highest average score will be safe this round, meaning that the two losing tribes will each attend tribal council. Remember that the highest scoring member of each losing tribe will be immune at tribal council.

Your song submissions are due in ~24 hours (7 PM ET) on Tuesday, January 18th.

Good luck and please let the hosts know if you have any questions!

The Tundra

Welcome to The Tundra! This season, you have been stranded in a gorgeous frozen landscape, with hidden treasures to behold at every turn.

Here's how it works: Feel free to explore The Tundra at your discretion. As you can see on Discord, there are multiple channels featuring images of the icy world around you. At random, pre-determined intervals, a new image will be edited into one (or more) of the channels, and will feature special treasures, including hidden immunity idols. In order to claim the treasure you find, you must take a SCREENSHOT of the picture in the channel, and then send that screenshot to the hosts via Discord DM. You can not just copy and paste the picture that has the item in it. The first person to send this screenshot correctly via Discord DM will collect the item. If others send afterwards, they will be told that they were too late, but not told who found the item. Once you find a treasure on The Tundra, you will not be able to collect another through this method.

However, there is a major twist to this season's hidden immunity idols. The protective amulets of The Tundra are a bit frozen in the ice, some so much that they will not thaw out and work properly. As an homage to the first ever Survivor game that I played, only SOME of the hidden immunity idols found across The Tundra will be real. Some will be completely fake and useless, and this information will not be revealed to the user when the idol is found. The only way to find out for sure is to play the idol at tribal council... where it will either be tossed into the fire as fake, or used as normal to cancel votes that night. The risk is big, but the reward is bigger.

All of the fake/real idols have been set to appear at pre-determined times, and after a certain amount of time, they will disappear. So keep your eyes on The Tundra on Discord -- you never know what you'll find here!

Eros Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag
jeffreyy Simple Plan - I'm Just a Kid
DOUGLAS BOOTH Marina + the Diamonds - Teen Idle
Golden Hour American Hi-Fi - The Art of Losing
VenusFlyTrap Marina + The Diamonds - The Outsider
Harmonizer Bowling for Soup - High School Never Ends
Acetone Charli XCX - Break the Rules
Opulent Lorde - Ribs

Wheatus - Teenage Dirtbag

  • Auburn - 9 - No one said it COULDN’T be about love! Although this is more of a classic superficial teenage crush song than an actual love/breakup song. This song embodies the theme well for me; the insecurity and the complaining and the defeatist attitude.
  • Gateau - 6 - I kinda get what you were trying to do with the whole ~self-loathing-teenager~ thing, but this was a poor choice for the fact that the lyrics ultimately centered around a love story.
  • Luckystrike - 5 - I feel like this is only within the “love” vein which was pretty much stated in the theme, was not what we were looking for exactly, I didn’t get any type of angst or frustrations other than not being noticed by his crush, I wish it expanded a little bit more on the theme of being a reject or whatever.
  • Supaspaz - 8 - I was surprised to see the mixed reception for this one…and then I wasn’t. Whoever said unrequited crushes aren’t the angstiest part of being a teenager? Wheatus skillfully vacillates between a range of tones. They’re whiny. They’re moony. They’re zit-faced. “Teenage Dirtbag” is brilliant. You have no idea how brilliant it is!

Simple Plan - I'm Just a Kid

  • Auburn - 10 - It just fits, it’s even not that good just like kids!
  • Gateau - 9 - This song hit a good spot with the frustrations of youth, but not the disappointments as stated in the prompt, so I had to knock it down a point.
  • Luckystrike - 8 - Overall it is a solid choice, it felt a little one note to me when it came to the lyrics throughout the whole song but it definitely works and does a pretty well job at tackling the theme.
  • Supaspaz - 9 - Much like life, this song is kind of a nightmare. But it definitely hits the theme! One point off because it’s not clear whether he’s actually a teenager, even if he sounds like one.

Marina + the Diamonds - Teen Idle

  • Auburn - 8 - While I do love this song, I feel like it doesn’t completely fit because a lot of her angst is coming from the regret of hindsight rather than reality.
  • Gateau - 10 - Right on the mark.
  • Luckystrike - 10 - It doesn’t miss a mark for me, she presents MANY teenage struggles in an absolute perfect way, work.
  • Supaspaz - 9.5 - An interesting spin on the theme, because she’s looking back on her youthful regrets rather than singing from that perspective in the moment. It’s certainly angsty!

American Hi-Fi - The Art of Losing

  • Auburn - 9 - OMG this is from the volleyball scene in Freaky Friday!!! Took off a point because I don’t feel like this song particularly strongly alludes to the teenage aspect of the theme lyrically.
  • Gateau - 9.5
  • Luckystrike - 10 - This showcases teenage angst perfectly for me, that frustration of being told you have to be some type of way but not wanting to follow that same path, amongst more lyrics that I felt hit every mark very nicely, good job!
  • Supaspaz - 10 - In sound and spirit, it fits the teenage angst mold better than any other submission on your team this round. I was going to ding you for a lack of specificity that made me wonder whether the narrator was just a loser still sleeping on his parents’ couch, but the outro salvaged it.

Marina + The Diamonds - The Outsider

  • Auburn - 2.5 - Hm, sorry but there’s not much relation here.
  • Gateau - 3 - Ummmmm yeah so there’s nothing about this song that mentions anything about being a teenager. In fact, there’s nothing about this song that even seems to sort of imply these are teenage-specific issues the singer is expressing. Obviously the song centers around feeling out of place, but you can feel like this at any age. I gave a three as I feel like you kind of got it but you really misunderstood the assignment.
  • Luckystrike - 4 - I mean… it is about feeling out of place/like the odd one out, I guess, but I don’t see any type of teen angst, nor does she mention it anywhere in the song, this was quite a big miss but I can kind of understand why you decided to send this.
  • Supaspaz - 1 - Simply does not fit the theme. I’m afraid my colleagues are being generous.

Bowling for Soup - High School Never Ends

  • Auburn - 5 - It relates, but doesn’t nail it for me.
  • Gateau - 6.5 - This song is written from the perspective of a jaded adult, and not a disillusioned teen like the challenge requested. HOWEVER, there were some parts of the song that showed teenager-y issues. The problem is that the whole song is basically “the entire lifetime is high school, not just the teen years” which is like…. Almost the opposite of what we were looking for but… ya know!
  • Luckystrike - 5 - This feels like a grown man complaining about adult life and comparing it to high school, and while I guess it does tackle the theme in a way when comparing it to teenage struggles, I don’t think this was a good entry since basically the theme is just “life sucks the same way it did back then, just with grown people things”.
  • Supaspaz - 6 - As others noted, you sort of backed into the theme. It’s not exactly right, but it’s not wrong either.

Charli XCX - Break the Rules

  • Auburn - 1.5 - Love this bop, but apart from the mention of school, it kinda bombs the theme. Also just found out recently that Charli hates this song, so that’s… even more disappointing than this being your entry.
  • Gateau - 3 - This was not what we asked for at all tbh. I understand what you were going for from the ‘rebellious youngin’ slant, but this does not mention any frustrations or disappointments about youth.
  • Luckystrike - 1 - Pains my gay heart and soul to give it a ONE because this song is a smash but like… it’s literally about partying? Like, it does not have one single mention of a teenage struggle or one bit of angst/frustration baby, huge miss for this theme.
  • Supaspaz - 2 - At least she sings about not wanting to go to school.

Lorde - Ribs

  • Auburn - 7 - Thematically adequate, but comes across more melancholic than angsty or frustrated.
  • Gateau - 9.5 - So, this pretty much hit the nail on the head. This song still makes me shiver. The only issue I have (which is why I docked it .5) is the vagueness of the lyrics. There’s really no distinct examples of why it's so scary getting old, or why the dream in question isn’t feeling sweet.
  • Luckystrike - 8 - At first I was like “oh no baby this doesn’t work” but when I listened again, I realized it does, it’s stating how scared she is of growing up, although she doesn’t go in that deep into the theme or gets more specific, it definitely does a cute job.
  • Supaspaz - 9 - An ethereal and deeply moving portrait of the fear of growing up.

5 Seconds of Summer - Social Casualty

  • Auburn - 8 - Pretty strong, but I’ve seen other entries do it better.
  • Gateau - 8.5 - When I first saw the lyrics to this song, I was like “ugh…” so I took a night to sleep on it, took it in with a fresh mind and I think this did hit a lot of the points the prompt asked for. Not QUITE there, but almost there.
  • Luckystrike - 5 - I get why you sent this but it’s extremely vague for me, it doesn’t go deeper than “I’m in the minority, I’m an outcast because nobody believes in me” and I just didn’t get anything more from it. Love the song though, it gives me nostalgia because I stanned them back then.
  • Supaspaz - 9 - Every generation needs its own “**** the man” anthems. I wish Gen Z had better ones.

My Chemical Romance - Teenagers

  • Auburn - 9 - I like how this one takes on dealing with authority and the way teens feel like they can never do anything right in the disdainful eyes of adults.
  • Gateau - 7 - It was kind of there and kind of wasn’t. I’m looking for SPECIFICS and DETAILS but this was a bit too vague for me, and I also had to dock points because it was from a third person pov rather than a 1st person.
  • Luckystrike - 3 - Whew, what a classic. With that said, it doesn’t fit the theme at all for me? I don’t see any type of teenage struggle being described here. It does talk about how teenagers can be a certain way and all that from an external standpoint but it never goes through any type of teenage challenge experience. I guess some lines can be seen as some kind of double entendre from a teenager’s POV but that would be reaching too far, plus we want songs that fit these themes head on, and I don’t think this does that quite well, sorry.
  • Supaspaz - 8 - The narrative perspective does it throw it off a bit, but this is another strong entry about struggling against authority and the way adult society forces young people to conform.

Motley Crue - Smokin' in the Boys Room

  • Auburn - 6 - The defiant attitude sells the song, but ultimately the lyrics don’t fully elevate it to the level of feeling like it deals with anything beyond wanting to disobey the rules to smoke.
  • Gateau - 8 - When he said Èone more time!È I was going to reach through the screen and kick his ass. Imo this does pretty well at showing the exasperation of youth along with several specific examples of what their problem is. Docked for points because the smoking thing just took up way too much of the lyrics so the message of the song got a bit murky.
  • Luckystrike - 5.5 - This actually started off super nicely and I was thinking this would be a very spot-on entry, but as the song progressed it just fell very flat theme wise. It just felt like a rebel student anthem about smoking at school and not wanting to get caught, I guess that’s a teenage struggle in some way but like, it didn’t give me enough of what I wanted or expected after the opening lines.
  • Supaspaz - 5 - It falls apart after the first verse, becoming too much about the actual act of smoking in the bathroom.

Benedixhion - High School Sucks

  • Auburn - 8.5 - I’m going to pretend I never heard this because the song itself ******* sucks. But unfortunately it works for the theme.
  • Gateau - 7 - Something about this missed the mark with me. I didnèt feel like this fit all too well. The gist was gotten through.
  • Luckystrike - 8 - Honestly this fits quite well for the theme, I only docked off a few points because it veers a little into love and it stays a bit one note but it’s totally a working entry for this theme.
  • Supaspaz - 9 - So does this song.

Fidlar - West Coast

  • Auburn - 5.5 - Have these people even been to high school? I literally don’t know one person who did coke that young. Must be a rich kid thing… Anyway, it kinda works but it doesn’t fully send it home.
  • Gateau - 7 - I feel like these are general complaints where only a few of them are specific to youth. Misses the mark a bit.
  • Luckystrike - 6 - I really don’t know how to feel about this? I mean, I guess it does have some parts that actually fit quite well like the second verse, but some parts make absolutely no sense with the theme and are just about a reckless guy who does drugs, the school lyric gives this some bonus points I guess, so you’re a bit more on the good side than the bad side for me.
  • Supaspaz - 8 - Not bad, though it would have been perfect for a theme about teenage ennui.

Say Anything - High School Low

  • Auburn - 10 - Lord help me.
  • Gateau - 10 - this is lyrically almost identical to the example song. You popped off with this one.
  • Luckystrike - 10 - I am screaming at the nut lyric. This song was absolutely atrocious but I actually don’t think it could’ve been more on theme, it’s so detailed about many struggles a high school boy goes through, it almost feels like he got home from a bad day at school, grabbed his guitar and just ranted about his horrible day, it’s actually comedic in a way. I’m living. Great find and congrats.
  • Supaspaz - 10 - I would listen to avocadies and bananies girls to the end of my days to make sure I never hear this again.

Olivia Rodrigo - jealousy, jealousy

  • Auburn - 9.5 - This paints a really good portrait of the insecurity and self-doubt that plagues many of us as teens.
  • Gateau - 7.5 - You kinda did yourself a disservice with choosing the artist who made a song that fit the theme smack dab versus this one that veers way too into the envy side of things. This song is more about jealousy than frustrationédisappointment with youth.
  • Luckystrike - 10 - The very obvious choice after seeing the round example given to y’all, another absolute perfect showcase of teenage angst about insecurity, anxiety, and the role society plays in teenagers’ mental health, congrats on snatching this.
  • Supaspaz - 9 - On target, especially a reflection of genuine angst, but the complaints about the negative impacts of social media are broad enough that they could resonate at almost any age.

Falling in Reverse - Get Me Out

  • Auburn - 7.5 - It sounds like his teenage struggles have followed him into his deadbeat adult life, how sad.
  • Gateau - 6.5 - This started off well but then went waaayyyyyyy into a different direction of dreaming & imagination. Like 50% of this song is really not what we asked for.
  • Luckystrike - 7 - This is just fine, doesn’t go in too deep into the struggles he’s going through but the teenage angst and frustration about the current state of his life are very clearly there.
  • Supaspaz - 7.5 - Listening to all of these songs is making me want to beat someone up.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, PŪANU...

DAP Paramore - Ignorance
Samsom Olivia O'Brien - Empty
Ampersand13 Heathers the Musical - Beautiful
Red Light P!nk - Conversations with My 13 Year Old Self
TruGemini Freaky Friday Cast - Take Me Away
Walley GIRLI - I Don't Like Myself
Armani Alessia Cara - Here

Paramore - Ignorance

  • Auburn - 1.5 - Some of you are really bad at this game…
  • Gateau - 1.5 - Gave half a point because I think it has a bit of a negative slant that I was looking for but idk what the hell you were thinking when you sent this. Good lord.
  • Luckystrike - 1 - Whew, an absolute classic that has absolutely nothing to do with the theme, what a shame. There is no teenage angst or frustration, this is just a song that speaks in general about a rocky relationship/friendship with someone, I don’t even see anything in this song that comes remotely close to the theme, other than maybe the fact that you listened to this song during your teenage angsty era and it reminds you of that feeling? At least it’s a classic. Read the theme prompt a few more times before sending a song next time babes.
  • Supaspaz - 1 -

Olivia O'Brien - Empty

  • Auburn - 2 - There’s just something about this that seems way too self-aware to be from a teenage perspective, and since that’s not even mentioned in the song either, I find it to be a bit shoehorned into this theme.
  • Gateau - 5.5 - These. Have. To. Be. Specific. To. The. Struggles. Of. Youth. And. Not. Just. Applicable. To. Everybody. I see what you were going for but when you are thinking of songs to submit, please please remember the more specific, the better.
  • Luckystrike - 5 - This is very clearly about depression, and while depression is a very common thing in teenagers, there’s nothing in the song that explicitly mentions teenage struggles other than… her just being depressed. She sings it in a very descriptive way which I liked, but I was missing that punch with some extra teen angst for it to be a really good entry, still not the worst though.
  • Supaspaz - 3 - Not that teenagers don’t drink and smoke, but the line about self-medicating the pain away really seems to place this song – already way too generic of a reflection on suicidal ideation to encapsulate the theme – in a twenty-something ethos.

Heathers the Musical - Beautiful

  • Auburn - 6.5 - Clearly you had to dig deep for this one so just take your mediocre amount of points and get out of my life.
  • Gateau - 7- A pretty left-field and adorable choice. I can see where your mind was going when you sent this in. The problem is tht there are just like a ton of other themes getting murked up with this song and I don’t think the EXASPERATION I’m looking for is really there.
  • Luckystrike - 5.5 - I mean… okay? I’m not a musical theater gay so this is giving me the script of an episode on a teen drama show on Disney+, it has some very slightly angsty moments where the lead complains about her life in school but like, it gets too hopeful and happy and empowering which is not exactly on theme. Also really did not appreciate this being 8 whole minutes but well, that’s obviously not affecting your score, I just wanted to get it off my chest.
  • Supaspaz - 8 - Amid the plot establishment that must happen in the opening number of a musical, this is all about wanting to escape the indignities of high school life.

P!nk - Conversations with My 13 Year Old Self

  • Auburn - 4 - It just feels wayyy too empathetic to be angsty.
  • Gateau - 5 I have conflicting opinions about this one. Idk.I feel like its *almost* there, but not quite, given the fact the narrator is speaking from a place of reassurance and experience, rather than what the prompt asked for.
  • Luckystrike - 4 - This is very weird and I don’t know how to approach this, but it is kind of the same situation as the Bowling For Soup song from the other tribe, the theme is somewhat there but the way it’s presented kind of completely misses the mark. The theme of the song is her old self saying “it all gets better '' to her 13 year old sad little self instead of actually showcasing the struggles she went through back then, she just vaguely lets us know she had a rough time and that’s about it.
  • Supaspaz - 6 - Not the worst song on I’m Not Dead! The real problem, though, is that Pink is telling us about her teenage angst without showing us.

Freaky Friday Cast - Take Me Away

  • Auburn - 9 - Lacking the vivid descriptions of some of the other songs here, but nonetheless, it really works. Also I just genuinely enjoy this song.
  • Gateau - 7 - This is like… kinda there but not like BAM like the example song or the prompt asked for.
  • Luckystrike - 7.5 - Cool. Definitely on theme, it remains too superficial and kind of repeats the same things over and over again but I guess what is there works!
  • Supaspaz - 7 - You’re it, you’re the ultimate! An automatic 7, I’m sure of it.

GIRLI - I Don't Like Myself

  • Auburn - 6 - It could be worse but it’s not very strongly related to her teenage years.
  • Gateau - 5.5 - This doesn’t really hit the mark for me at all and the closest this gets to being youth-specific is talking about tiktok. C’mon ma.
  • Luckystrike - 7 - Okay bop! Obviously about self image issues and insecurities, I guess the teenage part kinda comes with the nature of the song…? But I wish it was made a little more explicit, even though she mentions it’s something she has struggled with her whole life, the lack of focus on the teenage phase is what took some points here for me, but overall I feel like it works to an extent.
  • Supaspaz - 5 - Is she European? Because otherwise I don’t think a teenager is working through her body issues in the club. This is a hyperpop bop, though.

Alessia Cara - Here

  • Auburn - 8.5 - Thank you for reminding me of this song, I really wanted to hear it again. :)
  • Gateau - 7 - Ahhhh, back in the days when Alessia seemed like she had something interesting to say and was an emerging star. I recited the lyrics to this song before I even pressed play. I feel like this touches on a bunch of issues that Alessia has with other teens etc but it misses the mark because the song doesn’t exactly touch on what frustrated her about youth itself. Its also very concentrated on this party scenario rather than generalized feelings of frustration, which detract from the ultimate message I’m looking for.
  • Luckystrike - 7.5 - Paints a pretty clear picture of a teenager in a party where they obviously don’t feel comfortable due to anxiety. Very relatable for a teenager going through an angsty phase. Even though it doesn’t expand much into the theme, the way she describes everything at the party makes it work enough for me.
  • Supaspaz - 3 - Is she an angsty teen? Sure. Is this a song about teenage angst? No, it’s about social anxiety.
