Those wanting it to sound more like a traditional ballad and less like a soundtrack for the end credits are forgetting what purpose the song is meant to serve. Getting bet an Oscar? Cause her previous soundtrack tanked too The Lion King was extremely popular, but Spirit was shortly and poorly edited into the final film. I don't see how people would have seen it in the film and then left wanting to go listen to it. It felt like an afterthought and unlike every other song in the film. it wasn't sung by character, even if it was Nala's voice. It was like Simba-running-background music for like 30 seconds and they re-edited it too, switching parts of the song around. It was really weird. Plus the music in the film was kinda bad as a whole, and who was going to The Lion King looking for new songs when the original is beloved as it is. My critique of the film: they should've not made it a musical. If they were going to make it so "real", why keep the singing? Add to that how they didn't do any of the fun things visually the original did, and the performances of the songs were dull. It should have been just live-action and Spirit should have been the end credits song instead of the Elton John one, or, they should have just kept Spirit as a song for The Gift. Had they done that I think The Gift would have been less confusing, since it was the lead single for the soundtrack and The Gift, which was released one week after the OST. Plus, the music from the soundtrack is pretty bad and doesn't compare to the original. Be Prepared alone, from a vocal performance perspective, was so bad and is one of the film's highlights. So I just think they should have changed the story in the places that needed it and retold it different if they wanted to be true to life. If not, they why not stack animal on animal on animal in I Just Can't Wait To Be King, etc. As for Spirit's quality. I personally love it. I'm also Hive, though not every Beyoncé fan loves it. But given how poorly it was used in the film (and how as you said, the music is the main part) and how not even Disney soundtrack singles by Ariana or Zayn (whose came out earlier that year before TLK) managed to do much better, I don't think it was some huge surprising flop. I also think had Spirit been used in full in the film it would have done a least a bit better. I mean full placement that integrates into the story (Nala singing/inspiring Simba or something) would have a much bigger effect than simply having Simba run while it plays in the background. I doubt people left the theatre thinking "What's that Beyoncé background music song?". And actually, Spirit wasn't meant for within the film, but that changes occurred and Elton's song was put as the end credits instead and Spirit was added into the movie as brief background music so it was potentially eligible for the Oscars.
