This is actually great (tho it admittedly drags a bit). Just a Girl - her voice is as unpleasant as listening to nails on chalkboard, big yikes. Just Tonight - i quite like this, i used to stan them a bit a few years ago fff. The Steps - it's okay. Garden Song - this is quite boring (and i kinda fail to see how this is rock, feels more like an indie/pop ballad than a rock one). Push It - Together - her voice... i don't like it. 4ever - the chorus is really fun but the verses are awful. U+Ur Hand - i actually like this, it's everything 4ever wants to be Don’t Tell Me - pretty enough (yes Avril has better, but it does the job well for this round). Bring Me To Life - absolute classic. Grow Up - it's fine but one of the weaker Paramore songs for sure. Los Ageless - absolutely. wish i had thought of them for this round 3 AM - it's fine. Worth It - much better than her other song. Rhiannon - yup, i like this. Love Is Found - oooooh, i actually really like this. very mysterious and sensual. touya kinomoto Posted January 20, 2021 Share Posted January 20, 2021 Here's my real critiques: Blondie - Heart of Glass Yeah, Miley kinda disrespected this classic with her scream-filled rendition. This was such an easy listen. The disco elements blends well with the rock elements. No Doubt - Just a Girl Gwen's vocals can really get irritating and this is one of those moments. Aside from that, I like the feminist lyrics and the new wave production. Looking at the rest of the songs tho, this might end up middle/low in my ranking. The Pretty Reckless - Just Tonight It's a very simple song to the point that it is very unremarkable. It's not bad but it's nothing outstanding. HAIM - The Steps Ah, finally a song that can contend for my number 1. The way it has elements of classic rock songs but still keeping it fresh. Ugh, the talent that that has. Phoebe Bridgers - Garden Song I have always found this song one of the just okay tracks from this good album. I know that the better songs have banned letters so I kinda understand. But ugh, imagine if Kyoto was eligible, that would have been another contender for my number 1. Garbage - Push It We stan the lead single from a Album of the Year nominated album! Another number 1 contender. Beabadoobee - Together What I like about this song is the contrast of the lightness of her voice with the heavy instrumentals. It's a simple song but not as unremarkable as Just Tonight. The Veronicas - 4ever I really don't care about this group outside their classic hit song Untouched. This song won't change that opinion any time. In fact, it just make me wanna never listen to them again unless it is Untouched. P!nk - U+Ur Hand This is P!nk in one of her best. It's a good but I'm not sure how it will stack up against the competition. Avril Lavigne - Don’t Tell Me I used to love this song but I find it... cringey now. Plus she has better songs. The Best Damn Thing for one would have been a better choice. Evanescence - Bring Me To Life FUN FACT: This is a karaoke classic here in the Philippines kii! In all seriousness tho, this is song is actually bad. There are some interesting aspects to this song but man, the rap, the unnecessary feature, the harsh production in some parts. Hard pass. Paramore - Grow Up Their self-titled album was really their best no? This is one of the standouts of that album too. Great pick. St. Vincent - Los Ageless I am actually quite surprised at the lack of St. Vincent this round (and in this game in general). Now this one is an awesome pick. It's not in the face rock but still rock. It's dance-rock and new wave and done well. Plus the lyrics, ugh, clever! Another number 1 contender. HAIM - 3 AM Uhm, yeah, I agree this is not rock. It has rock elements but the R&B aspects is more prevalent. I have to give a bit of a deduction for that. Too bad because this is a good song. Beabadoobee - Worth It The Dirty Hit-ness of the production. It feels like this was made at the same time the more rock-leaning songs of ABIIOR and NOACF were made. The thing is... this feels very similar to her other song this round. I know they are from the same album but I feel they are too similar. Anyhow, this is much better than her other song this round. Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon This is no Dreams but still a good song. I am surprised there aren't more Stevie Nicks this round too! Sade - Love Is Found Queen has some better rock songs but this ain't bad too. Still a good choice. Joan Jett - Bad Reputation Those who are saying that Avril did it better can choke. My entry is so mixed to panned Hopefully I end been in the Low song. I am not sure if I will survive bottoming again. Maybe I should have been really slow and sent at the very last minute. No Doubt — Just a Girl Mmm… I was hoping someone would submit Spiderwebs or Hella Good, but I could see why this was the entry. Unfortunately, I was never keen on how the vocals & production gelled here. The Pretty Reckless — Just Tonight I like her voice lots, especially the way it shifts in the chorus. The length works to the song’s favor, too. HAIM — The Steps This wasn't for me, but I'll keep in mind how certain aspects of the production & vocal production were interesting. Phoebe Bridgers — Garden Song I’ve heard lots about this Punisher album — this is a pretty introduction. As pleasant as it is, I do prefer uptempos, so this’ll probably end up in the middle of my rankings. Garbage — Push It Oh wow, I wasn’t ready for that chorus — definitely a more hard-hitting song. I'm appreciating the choice. beabadoobee — Together This was cute. The Veronicas — 4ever ABSOLUTELY. P!nk — U + Ur Hand Always loved this one. Haven’t listened to it in ages so thanks for sending! Avril Lavigne — Don’t Tell Me Hm… this doesn’t punch as much as previous entries. It is cute though & I’ve always liked her voice. Evanescence — Bring Me to Life Another true classic. Always loved the male bits in the chorus. Paramore — Grow Up Ahhh I feel bad since all their harder ones weren’t eligible for this round. This is nice, especially the outro — middle of the pack for me probably. St. Vincent — Los Ageless Expected to see her here somewhere. This one’s quite dynamic, I like it lots! HAIM — 3 AM I much prefer this to their other song in the playlist. Wish the dude's parts were shorter though. beabadoobee — Worth It Wasn’t feeling this one. Fleetwood Mac — Rhiannon First time listening to a song of theirs in full & I can definitely understand how / why their music is classic. Sade — Love Is Found Loosest interpretation of the round for me. It’s tricky ‘cause I like some aspects of the song & others I’m not feeling. This’ll be the one I’ll need to do another pass of to figure out for rankings. Joan Jett — Bad Reputation Cute classic. I thought this would be in the top half of my rankings when first skimming the entries, but some of these other entries ended up being quite nice.
