Yvess Posted July 8, 2019 Author Posted July 8, 2019 CRITIQUES + SCORES (1 OF 5) @Solarie @Queen Conchita Solarie - Avril Lavigne Spoiler Yvess: Solarie - 9 Photos: 2/3 - I love the concept you did here,. The juvenile shot is a SERVE! Songs: 4/4 - Avril is one of the most experimental artists I've ever known but it is such a shame, she didn't get to market it correctly. I love the polar opposites, slay! Explanation: 3/3 - This is actually really good imo. You made your points loud and clear. I love it. Speezy| Solarie - Avril Lavigne - 9.5 Photos: 3 From the photos submitted I do get juvenile from the first one but the Mature one does not cut it for me Songs: 4 Yeah they are very different, nice approach. Explanation:2.5 Very clunky explanation. But seems to cover most of your entry. Also Mature doesn’t necessary mean “anti/no fun” . I applaud the cohesiveness of your entry though, so I wont be too harsh Sabbath - Solarie - 7 Photos: 2/3 - I think the first photo is perfect reflecting on that “young and immature and looking for reckless fun” concept you were going for (what IS that vignette tho skskk) and while at first I wasn’t sure about the second picture truly being super contrasting, I can see it as the same girl from the first pic but after growing up, like yeah she’s still the music girl but she’s mature and settled down but I still see a certain edginess to her. Songs: 3/4 - I think sonically they’re obviously very different songs from the get go. However just because a song mentions alcohol, sex or drugs doesn’t make it more adult or anything, so I’m not completely sold on the lyrics. Explanation: 2/3 - I like how you explained the lyrics in an overall way and then went and explain different verses, love the effort and I agree with most of it. The description for the first pic is on point I think and it’s a “character” that I can totally see (and add to it) but the second one isn’t really giving me “glam or old hollywood style”. Kipper - Solarie - 10 Photo:3- Yes I really love these pics. The first one is the Avril that we know her as. She's serving her signature "punk", edge, rebellious self. Then in the second pic we see her more stripped back and she is the singer/songwriter Avril. She has a hard side to her that everyone knows and loves, but at the same time she has a softer more "real" side as well. Songs: 4/4 These are perfect choices!! Wish you sent Hello Kitty Jk What The Hell is perfect because lyrically she is saying how she don't give a **** about what people think of her or her image. She can be the OG emo Jojo Siwa and doesn't care. But at the same time she can be a serious musician and songwriter, which is showcased in Give What You Like. I really like how it has that folky vibe to it and it's a diff vie from her signature sound. Explanation: 3/3- I really liked the attributes that you focused on, these are the perfect ones for her. Avril's music can be fun/carefree/ "juvenile" at times, but at the same time she also makes serious and more mature music. Avril has always presented herself as the punk, skater, rocker chick that stays in the 2008 hot-topic emo scene, but her music can also be very mature, meaningful, and beautiful. There is definitely different sides to her and her artistry and you highlighted that. Queen Conchita - Conchita Wurst Spoiler Yvess: Queen Conchita - 9 Photos: 3/3 - If this is not the definition of versatile, then I don't know anymore Songs: 4/4 - PERFECT! Explanation: 2/3 - The explanation is quite simple, good thing the song/pics speaks for itself so I understood the route you went for. Sabbath - Queen Conchita - 6 Photos: 2/3 - First of all, I’m screaming at one boot being untied sksksk but I loooove the facial expression on that photo, it’s so strong. The feminine pic, I like it but I feel like there could’ve been more to it, the styling could’ve been softer to really give that delicate realness. Songs: 2.5/4- TOSOM is so beautiful. I really enjoyed listening to that. However, I expected more from an EDM song that gets described as “radical new style from her” since it still has a very soft vibe to it, yes, the lyrics are assertive in this one, but since you went for a sonical comparison as well, in my case, that didn’t do as well. Explanation: 1.5/3 - I feel like I pretty much already described how I feel about the explanations. I think they work for TOSOM and the Masculine photo, but could’ve been better for the feminine photo and definitely for the song, as I feel it lacks a “masculine” vibe completely. Kipper - Queen Conchita - 9 Pics: 3/3 Whew loves it! I mean we get fem queen+ rugged dom top = versatile This can't be anymore perfect. In the first pic we see femininity and softness with the purity of a white wedding (?) dress vs the ruggedness and masculinity of him in the 2nd pic where he is dressed down in sweats and combat boots. If that isn't versatility ion know what is. Songs: 3.5/4. Good thing we arent scoring the songs based on if we liked them or not . But nonetheless, these two entries are perfect examples of the versatility that Queen Conchita possesses. Once again we see that stark contrast of femininity vs masculinity. Conchita can ride that wave of gender in his sound and lyrics. I like how the production of the songs also plays into that. The Other Side of Me is very soft and light were as Hit Me is more aggressive. Slay! Explanation: 2.5/3 The only qualm I have is that the explanation was a little too short. I think what makes up for it is that the concept was 100% executed through the pic and videos. I just wish you elaborated a bit more and I feel you could have sold us even more with the explanation. Element: Queen Conchita Total: 8/10 Photos: 2.5/3 - Why are you using TinyPic in 2019??? I think these photos absolutely show the two different sides of Conchita, and I admire this confidence to express gender fluidity. My only critique here is that the feminine photo is flat/colorless and doesn’t give me enough of the described gentle energy (it has the same, stern expression as the other photo) Song: 4/4 - These two songs definitely display your concept well both lyrically and sonically. Side note: I don’t understand why so many of Conchita’s songs are written in an unpleasant key? Explanation: 1.5/3 - This entry was good, but if you had taken advantage of the explanation to drive home your theme and describe the duality more, you would have been in the top tier. I would have loved to learn even more about Conchita’s story and how this gender-based versatility has been so important in his/her career. This explanation did get the essentials of the job done.

Yvess Posted July 8, 2019 Author Posted July 8, 2019 CRITIQUES + SCORES (2 OF 5) KatyCatPH - Taylor Swift Spoiler Yvess: KatyCatPH - 10 Photos: 3/3 - SLAY Songs: 4/4 - another slay Explanation: 3/3 - you slayed us mama Speezy| KatyCatPH - Taylor Swift - 6 Photos: 2 Cute, I love the Cheeky one. Songs: 4 I love how one is old Taylor and other is new Taylor alongside being different genres. It shows a bit of growth, I stan Explanations: 2 You could’ve elaborated on the songs a bit better in my opinion Kipper - KatyCatPH - 6 Pics: 2/3 Hmm im not getting pure vs cheeky. It's like the unseasoned version of that The 2nd pic for sure is lackluster. If you're gonna go with a sexy/cheeky/edgy entry then go all out and give that. It's just that there isn't a stark contrast that is super extreme, which is what we are hoping for. It's a lil vanilla a bland. If she was gonna be edgy i would hope to see more fierceness, leather, black, red, something. Songs: 2/4 Hmm I feel like these songs don't show off her versatility that well They kind of exist in the same vein. In fact, they are kinda quintessential Taylor Swift songs. I mean everyone drags Taylor for always writing love songs, so I wish you sent in a song where she talked about something completely different, or sent in a different song off of Reputation that was more sonically drastic. Explanation: 2/3 Idk I wasn't really sold with this. Through and through I was still getting the image/idea that is "Taylor Swift". I didn't see much versatility nor depth. I wanted to see more drastic contrasts. Element: KatyCatPH Total: 6/10 Photos: 1/3 - I’m not really sure if “cheeky” is the right term for the second photo. It doesn’t have a brazen, disrespectful, or amusing quality to it. You could have done something like “growing confidence” over time… but that brings me to another point. I don’t think versatility is best demonstrated through someone’s natural maturity. Like one picture was taken as a teenager, and another in her 20s… of course there is going to be a major difference in how she dresses, confidence, expression of sexuality, etc. If you had two different sides of her from the same era, that would be so much stronger. Song: 2.5/4 - omg her voice sounds so DIFFERENT in Our Song. These songs also fall victim to my concern in the photos section… the alleged versatility here is just Taylor’s natural growth as a person and an artist. Of course, there would be a major difference in the lyrics and atmosphere of a love song written at 15 vs. one written at 27. The genre diversity keeps this afloat. Explanation: 2.5/3 - You did a good job with the explanation, especially diving into the composition of the photos, so I do see where you came from on everything. Unfortunately, the concept doesn’t connect all the way and the entry falls a bit flat compared to the others this round. kiiwii - Katy Perry Spoiler Yvess: kiiwii - 8 Photos: 2/3 - There's difference/contrast but I am not a super fan of the second photo Songs: 4/4 - super spot on! I love the direction you went on for the 2 songs, it showcased Katy's versatility in her song writing, production and sound. And despite the contrast, I like the 2 songs so it works well for this theme Explanation: 2/3 - Simple and sweet. Love it. Speezy| kiiwii - Katy Perry - 7.5 Photos: 1.5 Okay the first photo you nailed perfectly with your explanation. The second one was very forced. There’s still a lot of color in the second pic that kind attention to Katy. Also that foot propped high like that looks a bit uncomfortable Songs: 3.5 I do love the way how one is an empowerment anthem and the other is like a “I don’t know what I’m doing” anthem Explanation: 2.5 They could’ve been more convincing especially the one for the motorbike Sabbath - kiiwii - 6.5 Photos: 1.5/3 - I like the manufactured vs subtle theme, I think it’s a cool approach to the challenge. I think the look on the second pic is definitely more laid back than the first, obviously, but there’s a certain edginess to it - be the styling or the prop itself or both - that doesn’t give me that “natural” experience completely. Songs: 3/4 - Well done! The meaning behind both songs is soon different, like you described. Lost made me feel kinda sad so I’ll have to report you tho, also while it’s a much calmer song, it still feels poppy and the sonical comparison is something where you compared them. Explanation: 2/3 - I think I pretty much summed up anything I could say about your descriptions lol. Got that extra .5 against the photo description because the explanations for the songs are well put. Kipper - kiiwii - Katy Perry - 8.5 Photos: 2/3- Ok i LOVE the first pic. It is classic Katy. Very colorful, sexy, pinup, perfection! It's very "Pop Star" Katy Perry that we all know. It's her fabricated image that is so iconique. Now as for the second pic, I get that you are trying to give us a more stripped back/natural Katy, but I dont think this pic executes that 100%. It is like 90% there. I think if we saw a pic of Katy in nature or something then the contrast between the 1st and 2nd pic would be more drastic and effective. This 2nd pic has more of an edge and sexiness to it as well, just like the first pic. Songs: 4/4 Ok these are great! God how I miss OOTB Katy Her style and sound was soooo different. Lost definitely showcases Katy's original singing style and musical aesthetic. She was more "pop rock" / Adult contemporary. I mean imagine Katy releasing songs like Fingerprints of Cup Of Coffee today But nonetheless I am glad you chose a song that falls in that vein of Katy being a young/pure artist before falling into the hands of the industry. Now Roar is such a huge contrast to Lost. Roar is much more manufactured and a classic generic pop song. In a way it is kinda sad to compare these two songs as it really tells a story of her journey as an artist both lyrically and sonically. It's funny how the sadder song about struggling as an artist, is more real and raw, where as the upbeat song about being confident and empowered is more manufactured and generic Whew perfect entry! Explanation 2.5/3 I think your reasoning's were very succinct and precise. However I wish there was more of a realized concept. Like I feel you were going for "manufactured pop star" vs. "real/natural artist" or were you going for "confident established artist" vs "insecure artist" maybe? I think the story is there with the songs, it just wasn't 100% told. TBH i think it's just the pic of her on the motorcycle that is throwing me off. Like if we saw a pic of her with a guitar instead this story would 100% be there.
