Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ Scores Rare Triple Triumph on Pop, Adult Airplay Charts

“Flowers” becomes just the seventh song to have led Pop Airplay, Adult Pop Airplay and AC concurrently in the 27 years that the three charts have coexisted. (AC launched in July 1961; Pop Airplay in October 1992; and Adult Pop Airplay in March 1996.)

Here’s a look at the select seven songs popular enough across all three formats at the same time to rank at No. 1 on the three charts simultaneously. “Flowers” is the first since Adele’s “Easy on Me” last year, and the second in a row on Columbia, which has promoted four of the seven such hits – including three by Adele, thanks to the lead single from each of her last three studio albums (30, 25 and 21).

  • “Flowers,” Miley Cyrus, one week (to-date), 2023
  • “Easy on Me,” Adele, three weeks, 2022
  • “Thinking Out Loud,” Ed Sheeran, one week, 2015
  • “Hello,” Adele, four weeks, 2015
  • “Stay With Me,” Sam Smith, one week, 2014
  • “Rolling in the Deep,” Adele, two weeks, 2011
  • “Because You Loved Me,” Celine Dion, five weeks, 1996

Adele with 3 songs, legend tingz :clap3:

I fear that these gains by Calm Down is the beginning of the end of the Pop format as we know it. If the Pop format is still around at the end of the decade, I won't be surprised if the Top 10 is filled with songs that are years old, while new songs struggle to gain traction on it.

If Pop is going to survive, they'll need to introduce a 5/30 super-recurrent rule or give more songs the Break My Soul treatment (peak in Weeks 8-10 then drop them).

Calm Down is still fresh to Pop listeners especially with Selena's verse. There's literally a song that's 54 weeks old on Billboard's Pop radio chart. CD is not the enemy.

I don't understand your obsession with Calm Down :skull: it still sounds so fresh and is just now getting major rotation. It's the perfect song for pop radio.

It's not pop radio's fault if they're getting sent **** songs that listeners don't want to hear. It's just a dry period right now, that's all.

The dramatics :rip: it's been charting for 24 weeks, one more week than Taylor's LH. Die for You been charting for over 30 weeks yet I don't see you melting down over it

I actually like Die For You, but I've already acknowledged that it is time to let it go. It's already cemented itself as the biggest pop song of 2023, and I'd actually be fine if a 5/30 rule. Any additional weeks in the 6-10 range isn't really adding anything to its legacy.

Because I feel that some songs aren't being given a fair shake on Pop. Like the new JVKE and Fall Out Boy songs. They were pretty much dead before they even got started. I really don't want to listen to the same songs that have been spamming the radio for months on end. Pop radio is turning into Adult Contemporary and I really don't like it.

I agree it would be nice to see some rise, but there is a reason they dont. Those songs have no legs. Also I wish we still had national callouts, it would probably help explain it for you.

Yeah the callouts would definitely paint the full picture. Calm Down is obviously killing it

To be fair, Selena's impact is big enough to destroy Pop radio. Go Salinaaa :WAP:

BBs Hot AC & AC has 5/52, 10/26 & 15/20. Pop only has 15/20. Blinding Lights was 1st to past 52 weeks & now As It Was has done so & both ranked under #10 in wk 53. BB may add a 10/52 for T40 though given 2 songs have would've be removed by 10/52 RC rules.

Calm must've added 1+ formats. I admit that's a large gain even with added formats.
