Citrus Posted March 31, 2018 Author Posted March 31, 2018 __________________________________________________________________________ Episode 6 - The Cinema Ball Judges' Critiques Carrie said... Quote Carbon: Your ball begins with your strongest entry; I completely get the Snow White inspiration here and love that you didn’t go too predictable with it, but served modern evil queen. I love the gold/yellow detailing on the chest and top of the boots, and the big sleeves feel like classic Carbon while also giving the look a more majestic aesthetic that makes sense for a queen. I don’t love the shade of the hair. On the other hand, I love the hair on the Mad Max look. But overall, the look doesn’t feel very expensive or glamorous. This look works fine for a Pokemon trainer (wait, the shorts and shirt are low-key serving Misty now that I think of it), but doesn’t feel right for a drag race ball. There are signature Carbon touches that elevate the look, but it’s not strong enough for a ball. I’m torn about the final look; some of the description sounds cool (exposed cranium) and I know you had a tough week and couldn’t complete your drawing, but I think your drawing probably would have been more creative and unique. The outfit feels too complete on its own and therefore lazy, which is especially a problem since it’s the final look and should be a showstopper. Stone: Your Jaws looks is pretty literal since you just became a shark, but there are definitely striking elements in the look. I think you have an editing issue most weeks and that’s true here; why have the fully glittered body when you also have the white skeleton bodice and spine? That’s not going to look great together. Similarly, I like the idea of incorporating red to represent a victim’s blood, but that shoe doesn’t match the rest of the outfit aesthetically. Now girl, why are your entries out of order? Anyway, see comment above for the Bloody Sunday look; there’s a lot going on here. I love the entrance idea re: the gunshot, but the reveal doesn’t really seem worth it. Not loving those pants, and the choker really can go. Haven’t we seen that headpiece before? Your Arthaus look is definitely elevated by the description, but it’s another situation where the reveal doesn’t feel worth the trouble. Once that prison thing comes off, you’re just wearing a very simplistic black leather look (and a giant cross?). Gladys: “Colors were very obvious with characters: good and just characters wore white while evil characters wore black. For this look, I decided to take inspiration from the main villains: Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers.” Now sis! Anyway, I really like the shapes in your Star Wars look and the pink accents (though since when are light sabers pink? I had no idea). I also generally like the accessories, although the heels look a bit chunky. Solid look overall. Now the Spirited Away look was the one I was most looking forward to, which might explain why I’m disappointed by it. Spirited Away is an astoundingly creative film and there were SO many aspects that could inspire a high-fashion look, be it Yubaba’s baubles, the pig transformation, the dust mites, even No-Face (a No-Face reveal might be cute!). And we got kimono. I was surprised to see you love the movie because this felt like you looked up the movie, saw it was Japanese, and then just drew a pretty kimono. It’s pretty and the colors are cute, but it’s the most basic way to represent the movie and I’m bummed by that. You call your last look “relatively simple and understated” and I think that’s an understatement of sorts. I for sure would love this look in a film noir movie, but for this runway I want that look to be elevated in some way and reimagined to make a statement at the ball. I do like this look overall though, and I love the drama of the fur. I’m not seeing “crystals” in the accessories (it looks like a pearl necklace?) so just be careful with matching the art to the description when you draw them. Chanel: Like Stone’s reveals, I kind of wish your Avatar look didn’t have a reveal because I love the pre-reveal look. The volume of the coat with the boats >>>>. The dress beneath looks like a Christmas wrapping disaster. But your explanation works. I love the hair and makeup. I really like the Pan’s look aesthetically, especially the skirt and the shoulder pads. My only real gripe with it is that it looks too horror and not enough fantasy. I get from your backstory why you went that route, but I think the combination of the small horns on the head and the horns coming out of the shoulder (plus black lip) serves too much DEMON, which feels too sinister to match the movie’s fantastical feel. Like could there be slightly more green somewhere? Black + white + red is kind of typical, but you did it so well in the final look. The amount of red accent feels perfect. The first time I scrolled past this look, the striped top part having thinner stripes than the bottom skirt part kind of irked me, but the more I start at it, the more it works (hypnotism??). Top Hoot of the Week: Stone including the shoe twice in her Arthaus collage. Aciid said... Quote Carbon Snow White I actually don’t find this look to be very modern at all. I think it looks asian, and fighting video game like (which is like your gig), but it doesn’t read modern. I also don’t get snow white from it. I like the look in general, the boots are killer and I think its a good design. But I see a disconnect and I also feel like you could have done a more creative interpretation with the material of the movie. Mad Max I see the inspiration right away in this one and how it fits. Its edgy and fun and I quite like it, especially the jaw piece and the chain in the shoe. While the prosthetic looks really cool, bitch this is not realistic. There’s no way in hell you can pull that off on a runway, so it’s like grading fantasy. I have no complaints other than that. German Expressionism I’m contradicting sub here. I find the android suit to be really nice. I just think its a concept we’ve seen before. Even though the head piece reveal is creative, I actually hate it. I don’t think it looks good or fashionable, just plain scary which has been a theme for you throughout the season. Sometimes it worked, in this particular case I’m not for it. Stone Jaws The jaw face is my favorite part of this. I find this to be really creative for you, it’s definitely a concept. Besides the fact that Citrus used some of the pieces I’m content with your take on it. I’d change the thong for sure though, it cheapens it and in contrast with the skin I don’t see it looking okay. You needed a piece to match the bone like theme or just have nothing on and serve barbie. Bloody Sunday I love this look. The reveal factor has a purpose and it would be a gag when you walk down the runway. I don’t like the hair you chose though, and the choker looks cheap. That’s about it. Arthaus The prison jumpsuit is a slaaaay. I love that so much as a whole (without the giant cross necklace). Ok at you serving story with this and drama though dd. The face mask with the bruises is definitely a moment and it’s my favorite part of the reveal. Down to the outfit, I dislike the red straps and I think it ruins the look. I also don’t like the skirt you chose. I think a high rise tight tube skirt (latex one) would have done this wonders. Gladys Star Wars This is very sci fi and hits the mark on your inspiration, without being too obvious and cosplaying. It’s clean, modern and chic. I also love the way you did the hair for this, and how the eyes look. Spirited Away I’m glad you stayed away from cosplaying here, but Spirited Away has so much visuals that this feels underwhelming for it. You went for a traditional japanese look which really has nothing to do with the movie. I needed to see something more out of the box. It’s a nice look and I think the drawing is really nice. just falls short when you consider the endless possibilities you had with this film. I’d also recommend anyone competing now and in the future to stop doing traditional asian looks. They’re so tired now. Film Noir I like this look a lot and I think it’s definitely one of your highlights fashion wise. The oversized fur coat is so cool. You look so regal and elegant and what you were trying to accomplish definitely reads looking at it. It’s staying true to the Gladys brand while not being over the top camp. Chanel Avatar Believe it or not I’ve never seen Avatar, so I don’t get your references. But you laid them out and made me believe in what you were saying, so I’ll think your inspiration here hits the mark. This is so ugly but in a good way and I love it. The harshness of it in contrast with the saturated colors is what am drawn to. Like I told you, I like the unrevealed look more. The dress looks very creative, I just find the reveal to not have much of an impact so it could have been one or the other. Pans When you look at this you instantly know which movie it is. Again, this is not particularly pretty but fashion doesn’t have to be and that’s the misconception some people have. I feel like the bottom of the dress/skirt needed more volume definitely. Just because of the proportions at the top. But its well put together. French New Wave This is a stunning look and just gorgeous. I really have no complains and I have to applaud your work here, and just your effort in general. You really pushed yourself this season in all aspects and the growth from S1 is major. Tangerine said... Quote Carbo: I quite like the blockbuster look, it's simple and gets across what you were going for while also having a stylish air about it and giving a little flair and drama. If I had to nitpick I would say that I don't really get Snow White from this at all, if anything I actually see this as something you would wear on a regular week's runway. For the acclaimed look, I adore the hair and mouthpiece and prosthetic leg. The accessories are all on point and give me life. The outfit itself... I dunno. I feel like the whole Mad Max vibe would inspire more combat gear or armor-like designs. I appreciate the direction you took, but the colourful flourishes are the only reason I'm not tanking it. For the eleganza look, I loved the headpiece and reveal of it. That's the kind of out of the box creativity and genius I've been wanting from you, so kudos. I don't quite love the robot suit idea however, and I don't think it looks particularly couture or interesting. The focus is all on the head here, the rest is a bit... disappointing. Stone: Your blockbuster look has entirely too much going on love, I think editing was needed. I do like those bone accessories and the flourishes of red (although I think the bright red shoe was a step too far and that the red was best isolated on top of the body and the hands) but the bedazzled body art was too OTT for me. A lot of good ideas here but I think a little control was needed. Your acclaimed look was probably your best one. I think this is one of your best looks ever actually, the simplicity of both looks is startlingly beautiful and alluring despite the disgusting bloody mess you're portraying. Perfect use of colour and accessories for this. Now the eleganza look... I appreciate the story you're telling here but I don't think I would've got it without the explanation. And honestly? I love the prison jumpsuit couture look you served, that was some club kid realness right there. I actually think that, despite appreciating what you were trying to get across, the reveal look is a bit of a step down. You used a reveal expertly in the bloody look but here I just think it was a bit much. Especially since I think the look you revealed into wasn't particularly great. Gladys: Now, I love Gareth Pugh so this is a cute blockbuster look for me but I have some reservations. I get what you meant with the neon colours for lightsabers, but if I saw this without context I'd probably guess Tron before Star Wars. I think the visor is ok, but when it comes to such monstrously over-shaped designs as Pugh's I think that the rest should be simplified. I would've opted for a headpiece over the visor and dumped the earrings altogether. I also wish you had cut the hair short in an Annie Lennox kind of style. The acclaimed look was a bit of a letdown for me. It's pretty for sure, but seeing a kimono as your go-to for an anime film is a bit... on the nose. I understand you not wanting to go into cosplay realm but I think you did the exact opposite here in going too far away from the source material. I read your inspirations for each colour choice and accessory like... "yeah, I mean I guess". Those were reaches girl. I don't think I would ever associate this with Spirited Away if you gave me like 100 guesses. Sorry girl, this is the biggest miss for me this week. The noir eleganza look is a bit more camp than fashion but I didn't mind it. I like the oversized proportions and always follow the school of thought that bigger is better. I knew what you were going for with the look and props before even getting to the description so you definitely represented it well. I instantly got the era and style on one look. I think that it's a very cute drag look, and maybe not a gag but still a good attempt overall. The hair needed more volume though. Chanal: So that greenish toxic waste jacket you wore for the blockbuster look is one of the most horrifying things I've ever seen. That reveal is a gag though, I adore the pink bottom and that torso piece. It's amazing. My only nitpick for this look is that it's a bit of a reach to call this Avatar inspired, the ponytail is the only hint as to what movie you chose. On the other hand, that acclaim look is perfect. I didn't even need to read the title to know the film. I just got it. It's so chic and stylish, using accessories perfectly and conveying the film's tone perfectly in just a look. That's impressive. I think my favourite little detail is the hair/plant growths coming out of the outfit. Just perfection. Finally, this eleganza look is a gag. I scrolled down from the previous look already impressed, but wow if this isn't elevated drag. Everything from the shape and texture and expert pop of colour just works together. You could put this on any runway right now and get the world's attention with it. It's that stunning. This is what I came here to see. I wouldn't change a thing. Faye said... Quote CARBON Snow White I love this from head to toe. The splashes of colour add a JRPG flair that I expect from you but the full look draws a fine great line between portraying the Evil Queen yet feeling distinctively your own look. Mad Max I think the booty short shorts look pedestrian. Serving what MC wears when she's feeling like an edgy bottom in public. Overall this gives me Madmax meets Klonoa, which is a paring I thought I'd never see happen. Loads of great touches I appreciate though like the apocalyptic prosthetic leg, chains coming off the left heel, the punk ass hair, gnarly mouthpiece and the vibrant colour palette. German Expression I read your dissertation about time constraints and creative malaise, but even though you didn't fully draw the look your concept is great. Your explanation really sold me. What you've shown is dark and twisted. There's no shoes but still: not bad. STONE Jaws Well, I feel some deja vu here. Still though, this all comes together nicely. I'M NOT DRAGGING YOU FOR COMPOSITION THIS TIME, OK?! My only complaint is those undies look dollar store cheap and having glittery shimmery underwear against shimmery reptilian-like skin is not the tea for me. Arthouse I... um... HELP ME. WHAT IS HAPPENING?! Bloody Sunday I mostly enjoy this sheik interpretation of the events of Bloody Sunday. Lots of nice elements put together. Headpiece feels really out of place and random though. I think I would have preferred if you were already shot walking down the runway because going bare chested and bloody feels jarring in a bad way when I visualise it. GLADYS Star Wars Do not get me wrong; I see the Star Wars influence but this feels like Team Flare from Pokémon X&Y. I'm not a fan of them but their aesthetic was cute-ish I guess? Random point aside, this is great. I can't find anything to clock about it, well constructed and eye pleasing from the red hair all way down to those black sci-fi CEO "Yes I own the company, and you" heels. Spirited Away The mouthpiece looks off due to the colouring being a darker grainier shade of blue compared to the dress. Doesn't really read as Spirited Away, more so just typical Japanese culture but your write does clarify everything nicely as to why you did what. Film Noir Eat me the f**k out bitch. You will always be glamour in this L O O K. The forehead looking a little too big, maybe shift the wig down or move her facial features up; but everything else is excellent. Oozing 40's glamourpuss. A top tier look from you across both seasons. CHANEL Avatar Cash me outside how bout that. FULL CONCEPT QUEEN. Pre-ruveal I was into it but bitch, then you reflected the growing nature of Pandora with a ruveal?! I'm dead. Pan's Labrinth Not gonna lie, I hate your Super Saiyan 3 eyebrows. Part of me wished your dress hit the floor but this still looks really good. Leave it to Chanel Smalls to show off her legs going all the way up to her asshole. Nice work. Pale Man is a daddy btw. French New Wave I LOVE this look. Her POWERFUL stance. The self-assertion. The way it just screams 'I KNOW I am the BADDEST BITCH IN THE WORLD'. Ahhh, my ****ing fave. Moonchild said... Quote Carbön: Why do I feel like Morgan would wear this on a Monday night at Micky’s? I think the silhouette here is pretty interesting, and the sleeves give all the drama we need for an evil queen look. I associate Snow White with fantasy and saturated colors, though, and this feels somewhat drab in comparison. The actual queen’s dress was that really rich indigo, so I wish you had used that as your base color. The ribbons are a cool touch. I’d like it in different colors, but this look is fun and stylish. I love everything about your Mad Max except the actual outfit. The hair, scarf, chains and prosthetic parts are so cool. A ripped t-shirt and denim hot pants don’t really do the accessories justice. I would’ve been interested to see your take on an apocalyptic military-inspired outfit, which I think this movie called for. While I understand the decision to take inspiration from the more saturated elements of the movie, I feel like those were effective because of the contrast with the desert and earthy tones. I think you had the right vision with this look, but the final product didn’t quite meet it. Whew, the mannequin heads and reveal are everything. It’s very you and it’s so different. I’m not feeling that in your outfit, however. While I don’t mind that you’ve done robotic looks before, this doesn’t feel like it adds to them. It reads as a metallic catsuit with cutouts, which I don’t think fits this category. I get the German Expressionist vibes here and I love the mannequin moment. I know the game can be tough, but I think this entry is still something you can be proud of months from now. Stone: There’s a lot of good stuff in this look, but I wish you had focused on one or two elements. The rhinestone scales, the blood, the face paint and the bone stuff are all cool but distracting together. This serves the 2006 AMAs “Buttons” performance where Melody comes in BELTING at the last minute, but for the entire look. I think it could’ve been a 10 if you had kept just the face paint, red nails and bone outfit then made the heels more of a bone color than red. This look is really good drag tbh. The reveal from the trench coat to the red plaid and bloody chest works so well. I feel like you showed more restraint here than with the other two looks, and it goes a long way. The hair and makeup are stunning, too. I think this is one of my favorite looks from you. I appreciate the social message you’re delivering here, but it’s not quite there as a full package. That first latex prison outfit is really gorgeous, but I lose where to look once you go into the reveal look. The crystal mask, latex top with a harness, ugly skirt and gun all feel like parts of different looks for me. I commend you for thinking big picture with this look and let me know where you snatched that necklace. Gladys: I think Gareth Pugh was a good direction for this look. I like the drag Sith Lord approach you went with and the kinda neon orange as opposed to red sends me. The silhouette is good, the shoes are interesting, and you accessorized well. I’d like to see your hands, since your face is the only exposed part of you here, but that’s nitpicking. Good job, girl. I agree with the others that a kimono was a bit too obvious. Your color palette is gorgeous, but the outfit doesn’t instantly read as Spirited Away to me. I think it would’ve worked better if you had really gone in on one of the inspirations you mentioned, like the bathhouse, Yababa’s greed or Haku’s dragon form. I admire the thought you put into it, like with Stone’s arthouse, but it fell short of visually representing the movie. You having both a smoking revolver and a cigarette holder sent me. It’s so extra, especially with the coat, and I live. You had a good attention to detail here with the pearl necklace and drop earrings, and the draping on the dress is fantastic. We know what you’re going for immediately and it’s film noir to a T. Great job. Chanel: First, I like that you went for a plant life of Pandora theme instead of slapping on blue body paint and calling it a day. Second, whew that reveal. The first look is already pretty good but the reveal is such a slay. I love the holographic contrasted with the blue makeup and pink shoes. You conveyed the colors and feel of an alien world really well here. I love the makeup, love the hairstyle and the horns off your shoulders. I think the lower half of your outfit lets the look down a bit, but the skirt fabric is great. I think pants may have worked here, or a lower half gave the illusion of lengthening your legs since the Faun had Naomi Smalls’ legs. This look does fall short of the other two for me, but it’s still very good. This is probably the best look of the season. I love how you thought about the goals and methods of French New Wave and transformed that into what we see here. Just stunning. Citrus said... Quote Carb - I didn't mean to jinx you when I called you Carbdashian. Your Snow White look is servicable and honestly quite good, though it does teeter on costumey at points (particularly the pointed jester shoe). Your Max Max is perfectly fitted to the film and landscape of the series, but the main issue I have with it is that I don't get a particular sense of fashion from it. It reads as more of a cosplay than it does a fashionable take on the thematic elements of the film. I think that's mostly due to having so many direct references (the short hair, the amputated limb). It's still a fine look, though. As for your German Expressionism, I'm disappointed. Not because you didn't finish - we understand what the look is meant to be and it's good. But you had so many other ways you could take this, and going for a Metropolis bodysuit feels redundant. German Expressionism has SO MUCH horror that can be explored (something I think I even told you to think about n), and I feel looking more at the shapes and shadowing associated with that aspect of the genre would've given us something more compelling. This could be a Carb look in most weeks. . Stone - Your Jaws look is a very cool concept, although I think it is hurt by the fact that your second bloody look is almost certainly better. I don't mind that the bone accents have been used before, but this just doesn't feel fashionable to me. It's more monstrous, but not in that fun Dragula way. I LOVE the Bloody Sunday look, a total shoot. The concept down to the reveal is perfect, and it really creates an entire moment. Your ArtHaus look is hot trash, because there is just WAAAAAY too much going on. Your explanation, while understandable and well-intentioned, kinda serves a Monet X Change talking about her sponge dress. Good job overall, but I think you definitely need to edit a bit. . Gladys - Your Star Wars look definitely fits into the universe, but it isn't particularly exciting. It's sleek and gives us that chic, space vibe that we want, but there were also so many other planets and characters you could pull from if you had wanted to explore something more freeform. Yet, you did that with Spirited Away so I understand wanting to make a varied trio of outfits. Your Spirited Away is gorgeous but just like...boring? It's not because it's not a beautiful kimono (I love the sheering, that's fantastic artwork), but because it's just such a straightforward interpretation of the film. What about a kimono is Spirited Away aside from the production company behind it? You could've pulled from SO many more interesting influences. Your film noir look is a SHOOT, and I need a 7-ft tall fur coat with wrist sleeves YESTERDAY, what a gorgeous piece. It's so simple but it conveys so much. I think I'd prefer the hair to be up, but that's a minor detail. . Chanel - Harajuku Fuqyu is gonna be livid when she sees you stealing her wardrobe for your avatar look. Hate the green jacket love the reveal, but I *get* why all the pieces are there. That's a cute look. Your Pan's Labryinth is hideous tbh, but it makes sense. I think you should've stuck with the longer skirt or shortened the top, because it sits on your model a bit like a mullet dress. The model herself also looks super weird, but that's not your fault. Poor girl. The French New Wave is trash, garbage, made by someone ugly and fat (best look of the season you slayed it yas gaga etc). @EJQL8 @Rhisiart @Buddy! @Kylie Jenner @Hug @CHANEL™ @keshaspearsxo @Witch Privilege @Vulnicura @talent @feelslikeadream @Aciid @Subomie @True Skarlet @Moonchild @Lémur @PinkBox @mxtthewdelrey @Alena @Stan @Tsareena @Slut

mxtthewdelrey Posted March 31, 2018 Posted March 31, 2018 Haven't read a lot of this season but I don't need to read it to know that @CHANEL™ and @Vulnicura completely deserve to be here in this top 4. The creations I've seen from both of them on the seasons I played were nothing short of magnificence and it's so cool that they have this extra chance to show even more of what they have to offer. Huge congrats to all of the top 4, I must get round to reading S3/S4/AS1 this summer so I know a bit more about the other queens, but of course I have to root for my S1/S2 sisters because I know Chanel and Carbön are brilliant creators with an extraordinary amount of talent. Much love, Carmen/Judith/whatever

First, I’d like to say thank you to all of the judges for their in-depth critiques and reviews, I am very appreciative of it all. Me pulling out all the stops versus doing nothing at all won't change the outcome, and I have no intention of setting myself up for more negativity and self-loathing.
