There are a lot of factors, but it really all does come down to Folklore. That album radically redefined her in the eyes of the public, critics, and her industry peers and it did that literally overnight. She went from charting two albums at once on the Billboard 200 to charting 5+ at once consistently right after that release. I think it also helped to reclaim some of the “America’s sweetheart” energy that carried her first five albums, and then it set her up perfectly for the rerecordings era that has transformed her into one of the first music artists ever to be both a huge current artist and a nostalgia/legacy act at the same time. All roads lead to Folklore; it was the very first and most important step on the long road from the Me!/YNTCD era to where she is now.

Her point was very clear. It is important and a huge honor for the winner, but at the same time it's not the end-all in music. You can still be extremely successful, acclaimed and impactful without winning it (and the examples are endless). And this goes for every award.

The way her stans are yelling “OTH meltdowns” and do not posess the mental capability to discuss how unfair this win is to more talented artists with better bodies of work like Lana and Sza… just very cultish behaviour idk. I mean we’re used to the Grammys awarding bare minimium garbage at this point (also seen last year with Harry’s house). Nothing will change.

SOS spent 10 weeks at #1, is still Top 10 over a year after release, and spawned two massive hits (Kill Bill, Snooze). It also had several pre-release hits (Good Days, Shirt, I Hate U). It's at 4M units in the U.S. It's obviously a commercially successful album with the critical acclaim to back it up. She is involved in writing and producing as well. On paper, she ticks all the boxes of what y'all tell us is 'deserving' of AOTY. So I am once again asking why someone who meets these arbitrary criteria is shunned from AOTY while others (i.e., white artists) get AOTY four times.
