Citrus Posted November 1, 2017 Share Posted November 1, 2017 CitRuviews - Round 10 Lovesick - This reads a biT like an ATRL's Drag Race entry for a songwriting round. That is not a good thing. Although some of the individual verses are pretty good (Matty kinda did that), this comes across as a bit too cheesy/schlocky for me. If something is going to be super campy, I need it to be completely over the top. I do give y'all a shout out for the nurse them, because I like the out of the box nature of that. Haus of Cards - Similar criticisms to the first song, but this kinda recognized that it was a gaudy mess and embraced that role. I was about to shoot myself if I heard another pun/reference to playing cards being like romance, but damn if it didn't work! Like a casino Bond song. Hug - I've loved following you throughout this season because you're a legend in this game, and it's nice to see how you still change and adapt to each unique panel/challenge. This entry felt somewhat hollow relative to your previous entries, in that it didn't entirely feel like your heart was in it, if that makes sense. That being said, it fits with your recent catalog because it's smooth and streamlined with relatively minor issues. Your chorus felt a little too overdone with all of the allusions/references, but none of them were incorrect. It just felt a little laid on thick. My favorite song of yours this season was definitely Providence - it really connected and hit for me, and it confirmed your gift for sticking to and enhancing strong thematic elements. Good luck! Tsareena - Okay, wig, you being a dark horse like that. This is for sure my favorite entry of yours, because it feels as if all of your disparate, weird, pretty-much-good-in-concept-only songs came together for you to create something smooth and polished. There's an evolution in the lyrics as the bloom begins to unfurl, and your language is both your most descriptive and most vague; you finally got that figurative language DOWN. The message slays, and your outro is so good that I'm forgiving the horrible intro. My favorite feature of yours this season has been your fearlessness in diving full force into wild concepts and ideas. You've never been afraid to try what was difficult and what challenged you and, more than anyone else, you've treated this like a songwriting retreat because I never once felt that you wrote your songs with the sole intention of winning. I'm so proud to see it all come together like this, and I LOVE the line "I can't wait for sunrise/So I can see the bright side". Good luck! MattyTacos - I'm really happy that I Russia'd the votes on your vampire abortion song several rounds ago (deserved top 2 tbh!), because you've delivered since then and I think this season is great for you because it more or less proved to all the naysayers that your win wasn't a one-hit wonder. Your song this round fits into that same vein of fantasy/sci-fi exploration, and it's always a nice respite from songs about dead fathers who made it hard for us to be gay etc etc. Some of your rhymes are weaker than I'd like, and I think your syllables are mostly off throughout. Anyways, my fave song of yours was obvi Black Magic, and I'm glad that you got a chance to participate again and show us all what you can do. Good luck! Mxtthewdelrey - Coming off of the high of winning the last round, I think you're a biT of a victim of expectation because this round felt a bit weaker. Like with a lot of your songs, there is nothing explicitly wrong or messed up about your meter/lines, but a lot of the language choices and placements feel rather arbitrary. I might be dense, but what does it mean to drink sulphur? I'm wounded by your favourite loaf of bread? It feels a bit extra, and not in the Bjork way. Of course, your eccentricities are also your best feature because, when they hit, they hit really well as seen in your song last week. Abandon was a great balance between your esoteric references and your pure writing abilities, and lines of it (The honey one) still stick out in my head. Good luck! Uvie - In a sea of girls who have competed, been finalists, and won before, you were the little engine that could. You've really refined your style over the course of this competition, and it's always great to see a new face approach this tournament and use it to take the critiques and play around with their songwriting until they find a niche/topic they love to write. For you, you seem to excel at short, emotionally powerful lines. Although it didn't work as well for you this week as it did last (Strange Love is also my favorite of your songs), I can still appreciate the vibes of this song. The issue with it this week is that the generic topic makes the short lines less powerful and more in the realm of cliche. Nonetheless, I'd love to see you in the finale because I truly do think you've grown the most this season! Good luck! Aurora - I love that a rap of yours did well a couple rounds ago and you've decided to become the highest charting Platinum rapper in this game's history. The integration of the rap and sung verses in this particular piece is not as smooth as I'd like (it sorta comes across like a Katy Perry random rap remix verse). This song can join Ms. Andry and Scarlet Bitch by Hug and Matty to round out the PH femme fatale trinity. I love the aggression and just how much FUN you seem to be having on this one. My favorite song of yours from this season is 17, for sure. As I said in the review for that, it makes me feel things despite not having the same situation, and that's what good writing does. Good luck! SaintWest - First of all, **** these other girls saying I Kneel isn't the best thing you submitted this season, it's a slay and deserved #1. Anyways, you're a bit unpredictable because you change your genre and style sorta willy-nilly, and it sometimes hits and sometimes misses. This week, I think it hit and I'm really living for the simplistic approach you took. Although this song is ultimately another #GayDrama PH original, the metaphorical nature of it allowed me to not get as hung up on the originality of it and just give in more to the flow and evocation. Overall, I'm really glad I got to read your work this season after you slayed 10.5, and it's evident that your skill has improved considerably as a result of it. Good luck!
