Janet wasn't local. She had cute Top 10s globally and even a smash #1 in Together Again. All For You and Someone To Call My Lover were also big hits. But she was behind Madonna, Mariah, Celine and Whitney in like fifth place in terms of success but she was not local. Local is what Taylor was before 1989.

She's said this before, and it always made me roll my eyes me how absolutely furious people got with her when she did. Nobody ever has a problem when people refer to Britney as the queen of pop. Britney herself even did it.

 

Now, Lizzo is incorrect about there not being any pop divas before Janet's pop debut in 1982. Diana, Nancy, Donna, Debbie, Barbra, Jody, and many others all had successful musical careers before Janet. But still. The notion of Janet being a contender for a title that doesn't even really mean anything should not piss people off the way that it does.

 

I have a theory, but nobody likes to hear that they may have some racial bias polluting their brains, I fear.

Her first two albums were a literal flop and she didn't start gaining traction until she started taking creative control of her career and proving her worth as an artist by releasing amazing bodies of work while battling misogyny, racism and people like you undermining her because of who her brother is. Nepotism didn't get her where she is or give her the talent that made her the blueprint for multiple pop stars. Her hard work did.
