"Flowers" was the biggest global hit of 2023, probably the biggest by a female artist this decade. It was everywhere – streaming, charts, Grammys, even that standout live performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. It put Miley Cyrus back in the spotlight and renewed the public's attention.

But since then, none of her follow-up singles have really stuck. It feels like her career is right back where it was before "Flowers" - the hype didn't translate into lasting momentum, at least commercially speaking.

 

Why do you think did "Flowers"  not give Miley Cyrus' career a new, lasting career/momentum boost?

it did give her a grammy but she wasted it after that by releasing Doctor

Because it was hard carried by TikTok being invested in her marriage drama, not that it was because it was something significant or a masterful piece of art that'll last to the end of time. That's perfectly okay - she's still rich, happy, doing her own thing and making music she enjoys.

It's one of the biggest singles of the decade. She don't really need more hits, kinda set as an iconic star already

It gave her two Grammys, her most successful album in a decade, a Beyoncé collab… II Most Wanted definitely wouldn't exist if Miley didn't have such a big hit.

She really didn't do much beyond it did she? There was no promo by herself even for Flowers, let alone the rest of her music. Plus her music since has been really subpar. Doctor was terrible, and so was most of the album anyway.

 

Plus she didnt tour at all, hardly any public performances bar the grammies. So she doesnt really have a built in audience at all...

So even if she serves at times overall I dont feel the urge to check her new stuff when she has it. Supposing I represent in any way your average music consumer theres that

I think people really underestimate how lack of touring can hurt an artist in the long run.

It did but she wasted with poor single choices.

 

1- River (Massive bop, but not what os on the charts these days. Also nithing to do with her ex drama which people were invested in)

2- used to be younger(don't even remember what it sounded right, but it felt like right move to me back then)

3- Doctor (Such a bad choice especially after they saw how River performed)

4- II Most Wanted (a bery high caliber collaboration and right move, but the song was boring)

5- Calvin song (well it was another flop waiting to happen so....)

 

People wants songs like Jaded/AngelsLikeYou/Flowers from Miley. Something personal with lingering sadness but she kept giving them opposite.

Miley is a GP artist. She needs hits to appeal to broad demographics and she is loved and respected by everyone, but her fanbase appeal is very limited. She used to be a fanbase driven artist back when she was a teen, but those fan girls went to Taylor Swift and One Direction once Miley started acting edgy 

 

The minute Miley drops a song that is safe for radio to play in office jobs to millennial moms and young girls that aren't chronically online on Twitter, she's gonna smash again

It was clear the success of Flowers wouldn't result into anything more when Jaded (which is an incredible song) flopped.

 

Her new single is also bland and nothing special, which doesn't help.

Miley isn't an albums artist. She's a GP act these days. She's dependent upon her last hit. Even Selena Gomez is more of an albums artist since she matched ESV (with a song like Flowers boosting units) opening week with no hits. Without Flowers ESV wouldn't even secure a Platinum certification. 

 

I love Miley and I think she's a great artist but she's very inconsistent which killed her momentum and she never recovered her fanbase she used to have.

It did but she blew it with her follow ups. But it's not needed anyway. She's 19 years into her career, has a Grammy,  she's pretty much done everything

She's made it clear she doesn't give af about commercial success and just does what she wants to do. she's given us two of her best releases within a week and people keep trying to talk about numbers

 

she has nothing to prove anymore. she'll always be a strong presence with the GP and in the music industry in general.

"Flowers" was an once in a lifetime smash hit, an anomaly. There are a lot of reasons why it succeeded the way it did, everything pretty much aligned perfectly for her at the time, but it did not mean her fanbase grew at the time because, she did basically nothing to take advantage of Flowers' massive appeal. As some have already mentioned: lack of touring and poor social media management; furthermore, barely any type of interviews or performances.

 

She does not seem to care anyway, as you can tell by her lack of "work ethic" for chasing success. She is an established icon, and she knows it.
