Kill Me Posted January 16 Posted January 16 You need to be a hasbeen to make people comfortable to say you are one. Beyonce is a nonfactor hasbeen who is pretty much a legacy act these days, so people are okay with calling her one. Give Taylor a few years too, she might flop soon enough... everyone does. 1
Saint James Posted January 16 Posted January 16 you guys don't realize how strong bias is. Taylor could drop a Tracy Chapman Joni Mitchell tier songwriter album tomorrow with zero corny lyrics and it would still be panned by the people who don't like her. there will never be a time when she finally proves herself, people already gave her props for folkmore yet that's apparently not enough. she actually is like Madonna in that aspect and when Madonna was at her peak, people were constantly downplaying her quality and impact like they are to Taylor now. 9
LOTF Posted January 16 Posted January 16 As much as I dislike her, her legend status is undeniable at this point
foundwonderland Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Yes and it's not debatable. You don't reach 20 years of a career with no flopping eras and constant interest without passing legend status. 1

YES because she's done all she needs to do to be considered a legend insofar as staking her artistic achievements before the public, whether one likes them or not. She could retire today and she'd definitely be in the legend's circle. In fact, if she retired today she may almost immediately become a legend, which brings me to how the answer is also NO. Though she's done what needs to be done to be considered a legend, I think she's still far too "current" and releasing far too regularly for people to actively stop and consider her a legend vs. a contemporary, hugely successful artist. I think legends come into that status once their success or visibility settles down, and then people can view in them in a certain way. OR when they do something that gives them some "distance" from their peers in the industry (not just a level of success but access, or some sort of game changing output) that fast tracks their status in real time. Expand this. She is a legend in the making. The only thing keeping her from that status is she is still too dominant and her genre shift made her still feel like a fresh face. Most people dont realize that she has been the IT girl since 2008.
slw84 Posted January 17 Posted January 17 I don't get people saying she's dominant and can't be a legend at the same time. Michael Jackson, Madonna, Aerosmith and others have proven to do it simultaneously. Answer: Obviously. 1
ChooseyLover Posted January 17 Posted January 17 I struggle to see what's made her a legend if we are strictly talking about musical contributions. 1 1 4

The week it was released is the week she became a legend. Expand THIS. I literally felt something shift in the zeitgeist. People started talking about her differently
