Popular Post Achilles. Posted February 8 Popular Post Posted February 8 There are some cultural icons who are so much larger than life that you never need to discover that they exist. You simply know. You have always known because they have always been there. One night you are out at a restaurant eating dinner with your family when an old song comes on the radio and you realize that you know its hook. You have always known its hook, and you don't even know how or why that's the case. You know it because everyone knows it. One night you learn that your favorite popstar is going to release a duet with some old legend whose name you have always known but whose work is terribly unfamiliar. You download a greatest hits album and devote yourself to learning it. Your spirits soar with the most anthemic choruses ever put to record, sung by a voice so distinct that you understand how a person can come to be known universally, generation after generation, by a mere four letters. One night you visit a music store with your friends and they pick out one of this icon's records to play on the car ride home from the mall and it thrills you to know that you're not the only one who knows, who cares, who listens. You drive through winter darkness blasting songs that were hits before your parents even met recorded by an artist whose career began before your parents were even born, and you know what it means for something to be timeless. One night you are asked to present the ATRL Grammy for Lifetime Achievement to this artist and you are more than glad to do it, but you can't help thinking, "What in the world am I supposed to say?" Because there is far too much that should be said. There is a natural starting point. The comeback. Well, the comebacks. There have been so many of them that I'm not sure anyone's even bothered counting. It may be the defining element of the biography. With such a force of personality and a name so intrinsically tied to the very idea of America it might as well be "Apple Pie," there's hardly any mystery how this icon always stays here. Well, perhaps not always. After all, you can't come back unless you've gone somewhere. And this artist has gone out of fashion plenty of times. At one point, SNL was lampooning her for being such a flop that a string of humiliating QVC infommercials were the best thing she had going for her. Not much later, she scored one of the biggest hits of all time and changed the sound of music forever. #HasBeenThings It's a bit strange to think of an artist whose career has waxed and waned so many times and to such extremes as a trailblazer, but it can't be denied that she is one. If anything, most people probably underestimate the extent to which she created the template of the modern pop star. If pop stars were actual stars, she wouldn't be a sun or a constellation, she would be the galaxy that all of the other pop stars exist within. There isn't a person who has made a pop song in the last fifty years that wasn't walking a road she helped to pave. About a decade ago, she appeared on the David Letterman show while promoting a newly released album. They got to talking about musicians who were no longer around and out of nowhere this absolute diva uttered words I don't think I'll ever forget: It's the sort of harsh truth about the entertainment industry that only a legacy act would ever really dare to address so directly. And yet it's also a funny observation coming from this artist in particular, because we all know that will never be her best move. We're talking about an artist who went on a farewell tour, then went on to do two more residencies and two more tours. She scored her highest peak on the Billboard 200 when she was over the age of retirement. The queen of the comeback is one of pop's original and most natural chameleons: folk, rock, pop, disco, dance, adult contemporary, holiday. She has an innate ability to remake herself in such a way that inevitably adds another unprecedented chapter to an already storied career. There's a reason the famous joke claims that she would be the only survivor of a nuclear holocaust. And then there's her side quest. In one of her low periods, she was performing in Vegas (before that was a good thing). Francis Ford Coppola came to see her and suggested she take up acting. Next thing you know, she's starring in Robert Altman films and appearing opposite Meryl Streep. She won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which was wonderful because Moonstruck is the greatest romcom ever made. It was also terrible, because every damn popstar since then has inexplicably thought that they could do it too. They cannot. I appreciate that she makes these things look easy, but that is because she is supremely talented. Her Oscar acceptance speech is so lovely, too. She really got up there and said: Now I know I've said far too much already and I'm (not) very sorry for that, but I do need to talk about the songs for a minute here. The drama of Dark Lady! The vampiric seduction of Dressed To Kill! The sass of The Shoop Shoop Song! America's second national anthem I Got You Babe! The sincere empowerment of Song For The Lonely! The simply immortal Believe! The good Woman's World! The prophetic You Haven't Seen The Last of Me! Cyndi Lauper wailing about the man on the corner who doesn't have a name! We All Sleep Alone! Save Up All Your Tears! Future holiday smash I Like Christmas! Strong Enough! Dangerous Times! I Found Someone! Take It Like A Man! If I Could Turn Back Time! Singing backing vocals for Darlene Love's Christmas classic and then recording it together as a duet like fifty years later! Just Like Jesse James! After All! Drop Top Sleigh Ride! The Music's No Good Without You! The Greatest Thing! Take Me Home! Heart of Stone! Nearly every good song Diane Warren ever wrote! Ooga Boo! Did Christmas even exist before she asked the DJ to play a Christmas song?? We fans of pop music like to talk about titles and honorifics. Kings and queens, princes and princesses. Watch the throne! She's coming for the crown! Is so and so the new princess? But these are games for mere mortals to play, ignorant to the fact that there are higher powers in the world. There is only one Goddess of Pop. Her reign is eternal and her position unchallenged. There will never be another. Nobody can do what she does. And so it is my great honor to present the ATRL Grammy for Lifetime Achievement to the one and only Cher! A statement of thanks from Cher: Spoiler wtf is atrl 9 4 4

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted February 8 Author ATRL Moderator Posted February 8 @Achilles.!!!!! That was incredible. Such a beautiful tribute that more than did her justice. I'm shocked that Cher won this year's Lifetime Achievement Award, because I didn't know she had so many shooters like that on ATRL. But it's great to see her get the recognition she deserves. And no one could do it like you! 1

Achilles. Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I watched her whole induction Cheremony last night to prep for writing. Dua Lipa did not do her justice. You should have booked Adam Lambert instead. Or an AI'd performance of The Greatest Thing! 2 1

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted February 8 Author ATRL Moderator Posted February 8 Rap this year was dominated by beefs, and no one has had more beefs lately than...no, not Drake. It's Oscar-nominated star of Emilia Pérez Karla Sofía Gascón! KARLA: Hola. I'm so glad to be with you tonight, because I do have a few things to get off my chest. I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect neither my family nor me anymore, so at their request I am closing my account on X. I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything. I had long ago made the decision to close a social network, which has taken a terrible turn, in which I have also sometimes fallen, and for which I apologize. As part of this society, I have expressed my disagreement or agreement with all the related issues that have touched me and of which I have had an opinion, often erroneous, which has changed throughout my own experience. I have always used my social media as a diary, reflections or notes, to later create stories or characters, not as something that would be scrutinized down to the last of its 140 characters, since sometimes I, myself, am not even aware of having written something negative. I have defended each and every one of the minorities in this world and supported freedom of religion and any action against racism and homophobia in the same way that I have criticized the hypocrisy that underlies them, because the first thing I am critical of is myself. You will never hear me support a war, an injustice, extremism or applaud anyone who oppresses other human beings. Perhaps my words are not correct, many times due to ignorance or pure mistake. I apologize again if anyone has ever felt offended or in the future. I am a human being who also made, makes and will make mistakes from which I will learn. I am not perfect. Taking my words out of context or manipulating them to hurt me is something I am not responsible for. I am only responsible for what I say, not for what others say I say or what others interpret from what I say. I hope to have the opportunity to give a more extensive explanation at some point. Forgive me because I keep going from one side to the other and I cannot be responding to every single thing you bring up to try to sink me. But if you want, you can continue attacking me as if I were responsible for hunger and wars in the world. I apologize again if I have ever offended anyone with my words in my life. I am only Karla Sofía Gascón, an actress who has reached where very few have thanks to her effort and work, without stealing or harming anyone in this world, just trying to get them to let me live in peace, love and respect, something that seems to bother a lot of people in this world. It is clear that there is something very dark behind it. But I tell you something: “The more you try to sink me, the stronger it will make me. The greater the victory will be.” Please forgive me once again if any of my words hurt you. Here are this year's winner's in the rap categories... 5
