Jeremiah Posted November 8 Posted November 8 (edited) In 1991, Sinéad O'Connor ripped a picture of John Paul II during her SNL performance in protest of the child abuse committed and covered-up by the Catholic Church. Such brave act got her all kind of backlash, including being banned for life from the NBC network, destruction of her albums with a bulldozer in Times Square and the disapproval of no other than Madonna, who said "there's a better way to present her ideas rather than ripping up an image that means a lot to other people". Not satisfied with that, Madonna appeared on SNL that same season, mocking and trivializing Sinéad's act of protest, ripping a picture of convicted statutory rapist Joey Buttafuoco. To date, innumerable cases of abuse by members of the Catholic Church across the world have been exposed, with little to no accountability or reforming action by the Church itself. Is it hypocritical of Madonna, an artist largely known for her blasphemy and provocations with Catholicism, to shame and satirize Sinéad for denouncing the abuse within the Church? Does it make her controversies with religion look more like gimmicks than actual rebellion or activism? Edited November 10 by Jeremiah 8

SmittenCake Posted November 8 Posted November 8 madonna was probably mad what Sinead did got more attention. We all know how obsessed she is with making headlines and causing commotion. edit: the comments roasting the hell out of her Quote Sinéad was on the right side of history, Madonna was not. Madonna was jealous of the fact that the controversy she constantly tried to create during the erotica era, including the Sex book etc, managed to be eclipsed by a 10 second moment from Sinéad. That's it. Quote Madonna was passing a bad time because Erotica wasn't very well accepted, then she though this was going to lose that infame spot on her, but it only represents how desperated she was Quote By telling the truth Sinead was much more controversial than Madonna using her sex mix religion tricks. Madonna calculated that Erotica and The Sex Book will be big scandals, but all media attention was on Sinead, so she was clearly professionally jealous. Mocking Sinead's fight against child abuse in the catholic church is very low and embarrassing really. I lost a lot of respect for Madonna recently after seeing that. She also was mocking Sinead ""Madonna, in an abusive way toward me, said that I was about as sexy as a venetian blind — the woman that America looks up to as a campaigner for women, slagging off another woman for not being sexy." 6 1
MatiRod Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Sinead was GOAT. She's my spiritual guide in the world of music. Totally unapologetic and fearless. 99% of other artists in her position would've just made more Nothing Compare 2 U's for the rest of their career. Instead she chose to use her platform to speak on what she wanted to, record what she wanted to, and gave zero fucks if it killed her success. Also **** the Pope! 5
Soda Pop Queen Posted November 8 Posted November 8 (edited) You raise some valid questions. One of the few times where I cringe at a clip of Madonna. It's not like her to dogpile on another female artist, especially a political one like Sinead O' Connor. What Sinead did is PEAK iconoclasm and maybe Madonna was a little jealous she didn't think to do it? Because you can't tell me she secretly still had dreams of being a nun at 34 and that's why she was low-key defending the image of the Pope, a pope that had been boycotting her for several years and wanted the Like A Prayer video banned in Italy for its blasphemy. After everything she had seen and been through in the world? I know her whole family is Catholic and that's all she knew at the time but come on. I would've declined to do that skit and instead suggested something else in pop culture to spoof. Edited November 8 by Soda Pop Queen 1

Digitalism Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Madonna has always been super jealous and done petty things like this. I mean she is lucky she has that much talent to back her huge ego up.

AvadaKedavra Posted November 8 Posted November 8 (edited) Maybe she didn't like how Sinéad was seen as the most defiant religious figure after that. She was like, 'Not on my watch. You're not stealing my controversial spotlight. i did it first with Like A Prayer' I love Madonna, but she's very insecure around other women—that's one of her biggest flaws Edited November 8 by AvadaKedavra 3 1
