Sailor Moon Posted November 1 Posted November 1 daydream and butterfly alone >>> mariah really came through with quality back to back like that, with full on polished albums and great tracks beside singles. 5 1

Pop Life Posted November 1 Posted November 1 (edited) Mariah had a more consistent commercial singles run but she got it by playing safe. Madonna on the other hand experimented a great deal throughout the 90s and her album high points clear every Mariah album that decade except maybe Butterfly. Erotica and Ray of Light Edited November 1 by Pop Life 1 1
Venice B Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Mariah was way bigger in the 90's and even though she released one of my favorite songs ever (Honey) Madonna had such strong singles like Vogue and Bedtime Story alone CLEAR everything else so I'll go with Madonna for both
Popboi. Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Erotica + Ray of Light are instant winners. Adore Butterfly and Daydream but... 1
Capris Groove Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Mariah got a bit samey for me towards the end of the 90s. The chorus of Honey sounds exactly like the chorus of Dreamlover (and same for Heartbreaker which came later). She had some great stuff but Madonna was in her creative prime. To go from 80s-sounding pop in I'm Breathless to Erotica to Bedtime Stories through her adult contemporary era to Ray of Light is astonishing. And incredibly diverse. And that's before the visuals. Madonna. 2 1

Madonna is obviously Madonna, but it is ridiculous to diminish Mariah's well-documented influence and impact on modern music and the quality of her albums and remixes https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_impact_of_Mariah_Carey 1
flame_notturno Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Love them both. Madonna had strong album content but poor single choices, hence the points to Mariah. Seriously tho, Madonna's deep cuts, demos and b-sides from this decade are phenomenal. 1

Madonna. Honey and Dreamlover choruses are not similar in melodic structure or tempo I guess you meant Heartbreaker and Dreamlover. But yeah, she actually wrote both. Mariah's sound only seems familiar now because SHE popularized it and redefined genres. 2

Also completely irrelevant to what I said. 2 3

stevyy Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Only a Madonna fan would totally and completely deny the creative and musical impact of Mariah Carey in the 1990s. Sounds very MAGA to me. 1 1 1
WEEKND Posted November 1 Posted November 1 I adore both but Ray of light is a better album than anything MC has ever released 1 1
