Daddy Posted October 16 Posted October 16 Good. Vinyl collectors like me were waiting for this. We got so many previously unreleased (on vinyl) stuff in the last 4 years. I guess the pandemic people just ran out of gas (and money) and moved on.
JDC Posted October 16 Posted October 16 That's because TTPD: The Anthology wasn't released before, November 28 let's get that 33% back! 1
ZENO Posted October 16 Posted October 16 As someone who doesn't use streaming, I keep buying CDs (of albums I really like) to have a physical item to touch, have a look at the booklet AND to import the HQ audio files to my library. I have a question for those who buy vinyls: Why do you buy them? Because I genuinely do not understand such purchase. I know they're pretty... but the audio quality isn't the best and you cannot transfer them to a digital library. Like, I could understand maybe one or two to be used as a decoration for your house but no more than that. Still, I'm curious so please let me know your thoughts! 2

If you only buy CDs of albums you really like (but don't use streaming), how do you decide what to buy?

BlondGuts Posted October 16 Posted October 16 I switched to collecting CD's earlier this year because of the price difference. Vinyl just got too expensive 1
Alex Posted October 16 Posted October 16 yeah the price gouging has become ridiculous to the point where i'm buying maybe 5 vinyl a year compared to like 15-25 a few years back
piotrert Posted October 16 Posted October 16 Quote On October 15, Discogs contacted Chris Muratore, director of partnerships at Luminate, who confirmed that the reported data is incorrect. Vinyl sales are actually up 6.2 percent. Billboard has since added language to their "Market Watch" report, clearing up the error. Quote In Luminate's mid-year report, the company stated: "While the new modeled methodology more accurately represents the independent retail market, we do not have comparable historical data to provide an accurate year-over-year trend. Therefore, independent retail physical sales are not included in our H1 2024 vs. H1 2023 U.S. physical sales reporting." The "Market Watch" report has displayed incorrect year-over-year data since the methodology changed. Taking this year-over-year methodology into account, Luminate now claims that vinyl sales are up 6.2 percent. This number does not include independent record stores from 2023 or 2024. Quote "By all available measures, the vinyl business is up in 2024," said Fields. "Whether you'd rather look at the RIAA mid-year report, which shows that vinyl shipments to retail accelerated faster than any other major music format to rise 17 percent, or you'd like to look at Luminate's measurement of the U.S. physical business, which shows that vinyl is up 6.2 percent, well, either one is an accurate and timely view of the business of vinyl." https://www.discogs.com/digs/collecting/vinyl-sales-up-in-2024/ 1
Doctor Dick Posted October 16 Posted October 16 Of course they are up when certain acts release one million variants of the same album. 4 2
Draper. Posted October 16 Posted October 16 But is Billboard counting those independent stores sales if owners are not reporting to Luminate? 1

UnusualBoy Posted October 16 Posted October 16 (edited) Not it going from down 33% to up 6.2% Sure, Joanne. Edited October 16 by UnusualBoy

wish Posted October 16 Posted October 16 Awkward mistake but I believe them. Vinyl sales being "down 33%" would've been a HUGE red flag considering every big artist has pushed vinyls this year. 1 1

Acuminatus Posted October 16 Posted October 16 Time for everyone in that other thread to switch up their analysis 4
