What an amazing emotional record. My heart:jonny: Dog years, Panic Attack, Ego, I Believe in Magic, Lonely is the Muse, Letter to God and The Great Impersonator are my favorites so far. Special mention to Life of a Spider for making me get emotional.

Gorgeous album. Halsey's songwriting has grown by leaps and bounds since Badlands/HFK days. I enjoyed my listen and appreciated this as a full album statement, even if there are a handful of tracks I probably won't return to.

Fave songs:

Lonely is the Muse - her best song imo

Dog Years

Darwinism

Ego

Arsonist

Only Living Girl

I feel like we are not listening to the same album because the lyrics on some tracks are... bad ?

Like Life Of A Spider could have been written by a 15 year-old, is that one of the songs she said was "purposefully bad" ? (hence why it's just a "draft").

Ever since HFK, I can't shake the feeling that everything she does is pushed to appear deeper than it actually is sonically/lyrically. This might be just a me feeling, but this stops me from really feeling her emotions through these songs (and god knows how courageous she must have been to record this album despite her health).

Waiting to finish my first listen before forming a final opinion but this is my impression so far.

She really set herself up with Only Living Girl in LA as the opening because it's by far the best song sonically (the end >>>>>). Nothing on the album comes close to it.

Only Living Girl In LA

Dog Years

Hometown

I Never Loved You

Darwinism

Lonely is the Muse

Arsonist

Hurt Feelings

are the best songs for me (Ego should have been there but the hook is too "teenage", she should have gone all out like Nightmare).

It's a little bloated I think but at the same time there needed to be space to fully explore each decade so idk, it still works.

I thought I would be more partial to the 70s songs (And Only Girl Living In L.A. was killer) but oh my god the second half is so much more dynamic and interesting, the Arsonist and Darwinism, and the title track??? Holy ****. Lonely is the muse is still that b**** though.

I listened to this album in full last night. It's really an emotionally charged album. I think it's rich in lyricism and very raw sound wise. However, I felt there was something slightly missing in its overall execution. The concept, aiming to capture the feel of the 70s, 80s, and 00s across the different tracks, didn't quite translate for me. I couldn't fully sense the distinct musical eras that each song intended to evoke based on the sound. And considering all the impersonations she did, I did set some high expectations for this.

I have to admit I felt a bit let down. As a fan of Manic and IICHL,IWP, I was hoping for a similar connection with this.

Some standout tracks for me included:

1. Only Girl Living in LA

2. Darwinism

3. Lonely Is the Muse

4. Title Track

And honestly, considering the weight of the lyrics…I'm not sure this album will grow on me over time. Its somber tone had such a impact on me—this may be one of the saddest albums I've heard.

Haven't listened to the full thing but Panic Attack... she really should have attempted those verse vocals again because these are ROUGH.

I understand the subject matter and I respect it and as an overall project, it's very raw and well put together.  Girl knows how to write a song and make something unique, I will give her that.

But honestly, it's just not an album for me. I can appreciate an artistic album and a concept album but I don't think the concept was executed as well as it could've been. It could've been really promising, she's marketed it like an album that's set in different decades but they all sound a bit too similar and there's a lot of songs that don't sound like the decade they're supposed to be from. A missed opportunity for me.

A lot of the songs just kind of go on and on and I guess that's the point but it's a bit lost on my ADHD ass.

The best tracks to me are: Lonely Is The Muse, Ego, I Never Loved You, Arsonist, Dog Years.

i feel like the album is a very hard attempt of being "artistic"

i really wanted to like the album the artwork slaps but the music :chick3:

ive said this before but im 100% sure at least half of the references she said she had on each song were made up cause she wanted to do that type of promo. but either way, iirc halsey said that the artists were inspirations for the song and not that each song would sound like x or y artist made it. you can be inspired to make something and the outcome has absolutely nothing to do with the work that inspired it.

That is true! The only tracks I can actually pin down to a certain decade are 70s and 80s Letters To God, Lucky, Ego and Panic Attack. The rest is just kind of... Well they're songs, but not really borrowing from any particular decade. I wish this concept was explored more.

Okay, I'm back from crying.

As a somewhat well known halsey stan, i knew that this project would be very meaningful to me. So hearing the album wad extremely ethereal and surreal. I actually started crying during the opener 'Only Living Girl In LA' so this project was just a crying marathon.

I actually love every single song on this project, which isn't that unusual to me as music kinda always clings to me in some way, but some songs absolutely crushed me.

'Letter To God (1974)' has some of the most depressing lyrical content I've ever listened to and even now i struggle to not cry while thinking of this interlude. This track did not have to be so poignant, Ashley.

'Panic Attack' and 'Hometown' betrayed me, when I've heard their snippets in the trailer, I thought those would be somewhat happy songs, but nope. Both are extremely tragic.

'I Believe In Magic' is probably the equivalent of the most perfect bittersweet depressing sad song. Halsey literally decided to completely destroy my nerve system with the topics in the song. 'Darling' and 'More' now seem like ******* cakewalks compared to this.

'Letter To God (1998)' is so heartbreaking too and the sample of Ender's voice in both this track and 'I Believe In Magic' ? I am about to throw up.

'The Great Impersonator' is probably one of the best title tracks I've ever heard - it's just too relatable for me and the song being the somewhat 'satirical sounding' end of a discography and an artist is just impossible for me to handle.

I would write more but i am too tired :eli: for me this is an aoty

Halsey – 'The Great Impersonator' review: a brutal but brilliant reckoning with chronic illness

On the surface, the ever-evolving artist's fifth album is an homage to the musicians who have helped shape them. Dig deeper, though, and you'll find a her grappling with her own mortality, singing from "the space between life and death"

NME : 100/100

This was devasting to listen to, but I really felt her soul in this. After my first complete listen through, my highlights are Panic Attack, Arsonist, Hometown, Lonely is the Muse, Ego, and Life of the Spider. Darwinism is growing on me and everything else is really nice! I also enjoyed Letter to God 1998 as well. Very interested to hear what the deluxe tracks will sound like!

this is a beautiful heartbreaking album. really impressed with the raw honesty of her songwriting on this project. life of a spider wrecked me. very tough to listen to due to the content of the songs but nonetheless very rewarding as well.
