Oh people were still seriously saying that up until WW bombed.  *Some* Katy fans love to attach Katy's performance to Gaga's to make it seem like she is in any way comparable to Gaga.  It's a coping mechanism to attach something disappointing to something else that is much more successful.

I was there. An ATRL said exactly that. They even used the term "same boat" and they werent trolling.

Even if you remove Die With a Smile, you're left with:

- Katy having numerous back-to-back bombs that don't even crack the Hot 100

- Gaga's last JAZZ album charting longer on the BB200 than Smile

 

I don't even even need to bring Chromatica into the conversation because it would be unfair having outperformed Katy's last few pop eras combined. Katy sank to oceanic depths beneath Gaga after 2017.
