Mrnoniee Posted August 17 Posted August 17 (edited) To put things in perspective, GUTS spent a mere 11 weeks in Top10 on the Billboard 200, a stark contrast to the longevity of SOUR. On the Hot 100, "Vampire" managed 35 weeks, but subsequent singles like "Bad Idea Right?" and "Get Him Back!" saw a quicker decline and failed to spent more than 20 weeks on the chart. Beyond the charts, there seems to be a notable lack of cultural impact and widespread discussions surrounding GUTS. It feels like the album came and went without leaving a lasting impression. What do you think went wrong? Is it the change in sound (which really isn't), change in image (there isn't any), the lack of a standout single, or she's just DECLINED? Is she the Kesha of 2020s? discuss! Edited August 17 by Mrnoniee 1 2 42
punisher Posted August 17 Posted August 17 your own fave faced a sophomore slump similar to GUTS' and look where she is now yall have got to end this narrative she's still extremely relevant and GUTS sold 300k first week showing that there is demand for her 6

okgo Posted August 17 Posted August 17 I thought Guts was pretty big even if it might not have matched her debut
OnlyManInTheWorld Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Guts literally made me interested in her. My favorite album of the last few years 8 1
Spicy Pisces Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Too soon. She only has one era to compare it to, and her debut was massive. 5
Rihinvention Posted August 17 Posted August 17 (edited) I think she's just establishing a solid brand before pursuing a…Rihinvention She's actually really smart for milking this "teen angst" thing whilst her core fanbase goes through middle school and high school. She's brought back pop-rock and her eras have been too successful for her to drop off the face of the earth. I think she'll do one more era of her "initial brand" (ala "Taylor Swift/Fearless/Speak Now", or "Music Of The Sun/A Girl Like Me", or "Yours Truly/My Everything") and then she'll shake it up. Her 'Good Girl Gone Bad' / 'Dangerous Woman' / 'Bangerz' / 'Britney' / 'Stripped' is coming. It always does. If she jumped onto a really cnty, European, nu-disco sound (ala Kylie Minogue in the early-2000s) the gays would go crazy and would start acting like they've been stans from day 1. Her reinvention is 100% coming. She's simply establishing a solid debut brand. Without it, there's nothing to reinvent FROM. Edited August 17 by Rihinvention 15
FrederickGa Posted August 17 Posted August 17 WAIT, the OP is a Billie stan? Come on now.. HTE was also called Sophomore Slump, same with BTW by GAGA.. 1
piotrert Posted August 17 Posted August 17 guts is bigger than brat and chappels album combined. didn't she just have 6 sold out shows in LA? 4
Popular Post Aramis Posted August 17 Popular Post Posted August 17 (edited) Gurl... GUTS has every song above 100M on Spotify, she's completely okay. Edited August 17 by Aramis 11 9
cat1867 Posted August 17 Posted August 17 sour was a mega blockbuster. it's unsustainable for her sophmore album to exceed it. but olivia has established a good sized fandom and guts is a very successful album. 6

I'm just saying beats that wouldn't sound out-of-place in a gay club. Basically anything uptempo, or anything you can actually dance to, rather than standing in the spot and jumping like you're in a mosh pit. 1
Filpo Posted August 17 Posted August 17 And how many weeks did HTE spend in top 10 on Billboard 200? 3

zweigson Posted August 17 Posted August 17 the era with a #1 album, over 300k first week sales, 6 grammy nominations, a multi-week #1 hit, and a sold out tour? i don't think so. it was infinitely more successful than billie's sophomore slump at least. 5 2

Her "growth" within these two albums has been: NIL/NA/Error404 > These are suppose to be TWO eras. so I'm calling this is going to be her 3rd Album : with the same teen, angsty, rock-ish/pop-ish sound. --- She played it safe and tried to recreate her debut and failed. not everyone can have a DRASTIC image and sound change every era and STILL be successful. 1 9
KillingYourCareer Posted August 17 Posted August 17 Her debut was pretty unmatchable, it was MASSIVE. Guts did well. 1

Many artists nowadays have zero growth from one era to the other, whether it's the image or the sound, and still manage to be successful 2
