Doctor Dick Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) Before you look at my rankings, I'd like to point out that I chose the ones that made the biggest splash in the cultural zeitgeist for much of the last 24 years and I took into consideration that both Eminem's and Britney Spears' cultural peak is damaged by them exploding in 1999, shortly before the start of the 21st century. Eminem, you have to remember, was a back-to-back monster in sales and controversy and in the time span of 24 years hasn't only managed to enter the top 10 of the biggest sellers of all time but also had three Diamond albums and won an Oscar as the first rapper ever alongside starring in a hit movie that spun one of the longest-running #1s in the history of the Hot 100. 10. One Direction 9. Drake 8. Rihanna 7. Justin Bieber 6. Britney Spears 5. Lady Gaga 4. Eminem 3. Taylor Swift 2. Adele 1. Beyoncé Edited November 27 by Doctor Dick 1

Minto Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) when i think of pop star the first artist i think of is beyoncé and so do a lot of other people, evidently. bey performs better, sings better, has a better catalogue, more iconic looks and better hits….TTPD selling north of a billion copies will never change that so let's be gracious. dumbsparce Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Rihanna Eminem Taylor These 3 have objectively had the largest influence in both music and cultural conversation. Rihanna especially, not only has she had the most and biggest hits that are still everywhere today, but her fashion, style, aesthetic and even tattoos have been imitated countless times since 2007 by other artists as well as ordinary ppl. Her influence is unmatched, and that's without excessive pr behind her. She just exudes effortless star power. The other 7 could be anyone from the top 10 and the positions could be interchangeable tbh. Lana highkey belongs in the top 5 too for inventing her own genre and being massively influential even if her sales are not that great. 2 1

Gorjesspazze9 Posted November 27 Posted November 27 (edited) Em should be top 5, especially since he outsold everyone on this list. And his peak popularity is only surpassed by Taylor this century. Bey and Riri deserve top 5, along with Britney oh I forgot Adele to. And Bieber. They should be top 10 as well Edited November 27 by Gorjesspazze9

It's not entirely based on quantitative metrics; if it were, Taylor would have been the #1 by quite a huge margin, especially if it focuses on the US. Given that the list is inclusive of concepts like impact, influence, cultural status, etc, I think Lana can easily be argued to be in the top ten.
By the Water Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Taylor Rihanna Eminem Drake Adele Are top 5. That's all I know 2 2
Brooklyn Baby Posted November 27 Posted November 27 My gawd it is never this serious to be angry over a damn list that 99.99% of the world does not care about. 2
Vroom Vroom Posted November 27 Posted November 27 If the list is based on chart data, Taylor should be number 1. At the very least, if they did this list again in 5 years she should replace Beyoncé at the top of the list 1

Especially as a Millennial growing up during Eminem's Peaks , Rihanna's Hits being pop staples, and taylor is self explanatory. Like idk what metrics they are using but popularity wise these are undeniably the right answers 1

Ditto for her other cringeworthy attempts at choreography throughout this tour. It simply doesn't feel natural and authentic to her or her music, so I truly don't understand why she keeps forcing this 'fierce pop girl' persona onstage. It would be the equivalent of Ed Sheeran emulating Bruno Mars' performance style when singing "Shape Of You" and "Shivers". Pop stans have given him flack for being a 'boring' performer, but I respect him for owning up he's in essence a folky singer-songwriter with guitar and thus playing to his strengths (such as the cool looper pedal he uses), which in turn made him a reliable and engaging performer for those who appreciate this type of show. Similar thing with Adele investing on the casual banter with the audience, or Lana fully embracing the aesthetics of her music by having gorgeous stage design and her signature glamourous low energy contrasting with her dancers' (often to a pretty campy extent). Taylor's audience would follow her wherever she goes, and most agree she shines brightest as a performer when it's just her playing an instrument. She seriously doesn't need those flashy theatrics and choreo attempts, which actually make her a much weaker pop star in the process, because it inevitably brings comparisons to A-class performers executing better and more effortless pop spectacles. This is the woman who stated back in 2014 she's not 'naturally edgy, sexy, or cool'. And that's perfectly fine, so why has she increasingly tried to prove otherwise since? Like, why is a song like "Vigilante Sh*t" getting a baffling burlesque chair routine? Why is she awkwardly shimmying to "You Belong With Me"?

The edginess to things like Reputation and Vigilante **** has always been tongue-in-cheek. Having a little fun and not taking herself too seriously 100% of the time is an important part of her brand. 1
