OT: Jill is kind of a nut job and while I do agree that everyone should be heard, Kamala needs to focus on Trump and winning. Not dividing her time with people who have no chance of winning. I wish that we were in a position to have a third party candidate win. I wish we could break the cycle. In another election maybe. New Edition Posted August 2 Posted August 2 this woman literally ceases to exist in between federal elections
IBeMe Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Actually a lot of people said this could be helpful for Kamala because it could sort of serve as a mock debate for her to practice her debating skills which used to be a very weak link for her. She should take Jill on about this.

And my post was about giving somebody a platform and in response to somebody who said they were unsure as to why people were laughing at/over Jill Stein. Whether or not Harris and Stein have a debate has nothing to do with whether we as voters should give Stein (or Trump for that matter) the time of day. Two separate ideas.

Communion Posted August 2 Posted August 2 (edited) 2 hours ago, wehavetostan said: Saying thousands of black men were incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses when in actuality 55 men (of any race) is a complete misrepresentation of the truth You're mixing up Tulsi's criticisms for viral memes now repeated by Trump. Tulsi was referencing Kamala's time as the AG of California, not as the DA of San Francisco (where she did oversee an increased rate in marijuana convictions; the 45 statistic also leaves out those who were sent to county jails over state prisons for drug-related offenses, but more on that below). During Kamala's time as AG of California, the state saw 1,900+ admissions into state prison for marijuana-related offenses. Many of these cases would have been prosecuted by elected attorneys and not her directly, yes, but that's what the term "top cop" entails. That the AG is the face of who the state sends to state prison. Routinely we see centrist attorney generals work to intervene when they see a progressive district attorney acting in a way they disagree with. One of Harris' possible VP picks, Josh Shaprio, did this against the progressive DA in Philadelphia. The drop after 2011 also reflects the California Public Safety Realignment act being passed, which basically took power away from Harris' office and forced deferring many non-violent drug offenses to county jails or local probation boards instead after federal backlash to CA's crowded prisons. Tulsi also never claimed these were all black men. She explicitly framed her issue as disagreement in Harris accusing Biden of perpetuating systematic racism and independently, criticized Harris framing herself as a prosecutor, citing Harris represented "the criminal justice system [that] disproportionately negatively impacts black and brown people". I'm literally re-watching the clip to make sure, and again, Gabbard's claim were: Harris "put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations" = True (see above) Harris "laughed when asked if she ever smoked marijuana" = True, referencing the Breakfast Club interview from February 2019 Harris "blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until courts forced her to" = Meh. This is probably where Harris has the most plausible deniability. Her claim that she can't speak on every decision made by one of her employees as AG is bad, but Kevin Cooper had apparently exhausted the number of appeals he could make for his sentencing and thus her office had the plausible deniability to ignore what was only an informal request after 3 appeals denied up to the state supreme court, with Cooper making informal appeals to Gov. Jerry Brown for clemency and to Harris' office to somehow intervene in his case. Harris "kept people in prison beyond their sentence to keep them as cheap labor" = True, as reported by the Daily Beast (x). Harris' answer was, again, that as AG she could not speak to "every action taken by all 5,000 people employed by her office as attorney general and doesn't agree with this argument for delaying release". Harris "fought to keep cash bail in place" = True, referencing her office raising bail for weapons-related charges in 2004 (x) -- Anyone familiar with Kamala's record would acknowledge she eagerly contorted her views to whatever she felt was the political tide at the time. She began her career as a progressive reformist working with non-profits out of college, only to then take harsher stances on crime if she found it to progress her career. See: Her in 1996 working under the progressive district attorney of San Francisco, Terence Hallinan, only to later leave his office bashing it as dysfunctional in 2000 and then in 2003 running against him, running to his right. Hallinan advocated for abolishing the death penalty and legalizing sex work; Harris ran on the stance that Hallinan "has good ideas she agreed with" but "let too much crime go unpunished" and that San Francisco needed to increase the total number of people it was prosecuting for crimes. *While her time as DA only saw out of all convictions just 45 people go to state prison, that figure doesn't include those sentenced to county jail. And we know during her time as DA she advocated to ban people previously convicted of selling drugs from being eligible for the city's sentencing program where people could be offered treatment for addiction instead of jail time. In 2005, she accused the system built by her progressive predecessors of being weak and easily exploited by people falsely claiming drug addiction. In 2006, she fought to expand these eligibility restrictions, making it so anyone arrested for drug possession who also had a gun in their possession could not be considered for the city's treatment program in lieu of going to county or state jail. In 2010, she supported legislation in California to make truancy a criminal misdemeanor despite previously fighting for addressing social causes over sentencing in 2004. In 2014, under political pressure, she pushed for the death penalty despite having previously claimed during her time in SF that she was against it. This was all litigated and discussed from 2019-2020. She ended up burning out in the 2020 primary because Biden dominated with older Democrats of color and the youth vote swayed to Bernie, with the "Kopmala" meme coming from young progressives of color not being okay with her record. The below article has been linked dozens of times and is ultimately, despite the publication's Libertarian leanings, the fullest summary of her career up to 2020. Quote To defend her record, Harris likes to ask voters to separate her values from her actions. "I am liberal and progressive," she said after winning her first elected office in 2003. "But I was not running for the public defender, and I recognize there is a role for the public defender and a role for the D.A." The trouble is that she seems to want the credit for both. Prosecutor and victims' advocate. Leftist and centrist. All things to everyone, accountable to no one. Edited August 2 by Communion
