Why is "poppers gays" a drag?

Recommended Posts

Some of them are pick-me gays that want to cater to the straights for sympathy points but they'll still hate us the same at the end of the day. I honestly believe a lot of straight people still see us as inferior to them and a lot of gay men are turning conservative to "fall into the norm". As other users have stated, it also falls into misogyny and internalized homophobia.

It's a homophobic way of **** shaming other gay men for being comfortable with their sexuality.

Do whatever you want, but why am I seeing "internalized homophobia" or "shaming gay man for their sexuality" though? :skull:

What is the connexion between using poppers and your gayness, be so serious right now :rip:

That's like claiming mocking men for being effeminate has nothing to do with homophobia because gay men aren't necessarily effeminate. Don't be so naive.

Discrimination is always trying to mask itself as really being about something else. It's not.

It's that people are immediately called "poppers gays" for listening to certain music which feels a bit like internalised homophobia. It almost sounds a bit like "ugh basic gays with their basic gay taste".

What? :skull:

Gay men who are effeminate are generally naturally effeminate. Using poppers is not really mandatory or part of your nature? :skull:

You could say you're being shamed for using drugs, but how are you being shamed for your sexuality :rip:

Then why is it always "popper-gays" and not just "popper-users"? Read between the lines girl

I have never thought that using poppers is so discriminated on here seeing this thread :biblio: in here where I live 90% of gay use poppers. So 90% of us here are in the wrong?

Basic white girls get called out all the time for their basic taste

There's no rule that forbids doing the same to basic white gays, especially when it comes from other gay men

Internalized homophobia my ass

Yes, especially when the awful smell pollutes what are meant to be "safe" spaces for all kinds of gay people

Y'all should be ashamed for romanticizing drugs.

Whataboutism. Often calling out girls for being "basic" is rooted in misogyny, so that's not good either :celestial5:

What the hell. We use them in our bed rooms, not on the metro.

It might have a component of misogyny especially when it comes from straight men. Mind you it's the basic white girls that get called out most often so it's not entirely rooted in misogyny but that's another conversation.

Similarly, the basic white gay stereotype is often accompanied by a component of privilege. So calling them out for something as silly as basic music taste is not necessarily rooted in any form of discrimination.

neither being promiscuous nor taking drugs is the flex some of y'all think it is. where are the morals? where's the dignity. i have no respect for it, sorry not sorry. and the whole concept about poppers is just plain disgusting. i have to vomit.

...but why would anybody care about your opinion?

I think it refers to the stereotype of the gays who constantly go to the club, consume poppers and are highly promiscous. So it has a negative connotation.

Like every stereotype, there are things that are true to it. But others that come from a hateful place.
