Yeah her public image was tragic around then but the Madonna brand was still in full force commercial wise, with COAD she went from 7 to 10. Mariah and Cher had it way worse  IMO. To me, Madonna's comeback was the Super Bowl, which gave her the highest grossing tour of 2012, put her on the spotlight and got a new wave of fans, something that probably didn't happen again until 2024's Brazil show :rip:

Yeah I remember the Super Bowl, literally everybody was talking about her, it was the very first female pop stand alone doing it, after that it opened to door to Beyoncé, Parry, Gaga, Shakira and Rihanna. It was certainly a high for her in the US, even if the show itself could have been way better

Tina Turner's Private Dancer is the real answer.

and despite all of this We Belong Together remains at the #1 decade-end single of the 2000s in the biggest music market globally and Don't Forget About Us was a #1 hit.

Hung Up was an undeniable success but let's stop acting like COADF has as much hits as The Emancipation Of Mimi

Furthermore, Mariah was the first artist to replace herself from #1 on the Hot digital Songs chart. 2005 was the first year of AIWFIY going #1 in America (on the digital charts, ineligible to chart on the H100).

lows of mariah be serious :skull: it sold way more than mimi record and is more remembered too

Streaming: (Spotify, July 22nd)

996,928,713 - TEOM

704,222,596 - COADF

Top tracks:

475,055,234 - Hung Up ---------- 626,340,171 - We Belong Together

90,416,579 - Sorry --------------- 120,398,888 - Shake It Off

46,053,596 - Jump --------------- 87,365,770 - It's Like That

12,484,468 - Forbidden Love ----- 13,440,199 - Get Your Number

All this globality, a 100 million countries at #1 and still not competing with re-current streaming with TEOM?

On Sunday, TEOM will surpass 1 billion streams - Mariah's 3rd album to do so. (Madonna has none).

I also want to know where exactly HU went to #1 because there was no point in time the world had 41 official international singles charts.

A lot of charts were discontinued due to illegal downloading (pre itunes), or transverted into airplay charts or sth.

It will always be Private Dancer. From not charting and being dropped from her label to a 12-million-selling global classic at 45.

TEOM on the official European 100 singles chart:

#8 - It's Like That

#4 - We belong Together

#31 - Get Your Number / Shake It Off

#38 - Don't Forget About Us

#60 - Say Somethin'

The album spawned 2 Top 10 singles in Europe and sold over 1,2 million copies across the continent (excl. sps).

SIO fared better on the Official European Airplay chart, peaking at #17.

By comparison, COSDF annihilated TEOM on the EU Singles / Albums Charts, but only gained 1 US Top 10 hit and fared even worse on airplay.

Chartsmasters: Their respective #1 sales areas:

*6,750,000 - TEOM - North America (US+CAN)

5,250,000 - COADF - Europe

2,400,000 - COADF - North America (US+CAN)

1,300,000 - TEOM - Europe

*TEOM is certified 7xP (7,000,000) in the US alone.

I fear cher with believe was bigger.

The fact that this wasn't even her first incredible comeback. Ray of Light was also a stunning comeback success for her years prior. She truly is the queen of pop with so many imperial eras.

This is a MADONNA thread… why the Mariah Stan is having a meltdown with dozens of posts? :clack:

OT. Yes.. Madonna's triumph with COADF was GLOBAL.. and we are not even counting THE Confessions Tour, her comeback is the biggest.

It is Mariah Carey's TEOM. You would know it if you lived through those eras.

I'd argue that Ray of Light is the bigger comeback for Madonna. She went from being discredited as a sex crazed pop queen into ultimate pop priestess status. It is basically the album that solidified Madonna as the Queen of Pop. COAFD merely strengthened it further.

But lets be real, Mariah and most esp Tina were the comebacks of comebacks.

Mariah, Madonna, Britney, and Gaga (ASIB) had the biggest comeback ever in pop history :jonny5:

Can y'all stop overrating that "Kylie by numbers" Madonna album?

Chartmasters has her predicted at 12M units ww. I know it's not an official source but historically they have been proven to have correct estimations.

According to Chartmasters

Mimi - 12.9M

https://chartmasters.org/mariah-carey-albums-and-songs-sales/

COADF - 13.7M

https://chartmasters.org/cspc-madonna-popularity-analysis-2/

So COADF > Mimi in terms of sales. Both Hưng Up and WBT are legacy hits and they do decent on streaming, so I don't see Mimi overtaking COADF in the long run.

However as a comeback, I have to agree that Mimi felt bigger. Glitter flopped too hard. Meanwhile American Life album still had a lot of buzz with the controversy and iconic MTV VMA performance
