When they say "gay icons", they truly don't think about lesbian icons or trans icons. It's always about gay men. 1
goverm3nth0ker Posted June 21 Posted June 21 rihanna and selena. straights loves them more than the gays 2

I have to call bullshit. If we called every male entertainer with a pack of horny gay dudes chasing after them a gay icon, more stars would be gay icons than not. The other girls you named have exhibited behaviour that doesn't conform to stereotypes so I can understand that. But Taylor is as normative as they come, that's played into her success 1

And here is why there's a disconnection. You don't need to wear a meat dress or kooky outfits like Jojo Siwa all the times to be a lesbian icon. The fact that Taylor attracts that much gaylors (non-derogatory) to her speaks for itself. 1
BionicWooHoo Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Not gonna say any names of anyone but like yeesh some of yall think that just because you have some gay groupies or partied with the baguettes, that's enough. The bar is in hell. How about including positive gay imagery in your art and videos? How about highlighting trans charities on your social media? Like its easier now than ever in terms of social climate but some of these pop girlies will literally do absolutely nothing but Im expected to say they're gay icons? Please lmao 4

She actually is a lesbian icon to a lot of people, to the point she had to state that she isn't a lesbian because too many people have been saying she is ******* all these women, especially Karlie. She has just been keeping away from the typical gay icons because gay icons tend to be pretty messy. 2 2
Mandalay Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Make a thread about homophobic pop girls. I've got some names.

Fixed that for you there. If they don't appeal to a largely white gay male audience, then they're not considered gay icons period around these parts. I mean, just look at everyone the OP name-checked lol. 1
longjohn9898 Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Taylor Swift. She's only jumped on the pro-LGBTQ bandwagon casually years later when it favors her commercially to do so and she's never been an actual ally when she has influence others could dream of. Katy Perry is also someone that started her career with "Ur So Gay" which doesn't bear explanation as to how offensive it and followed it up with benefiting financially from exploitation of homosexuality in I Kissed A Girl which she hadn't done. Her use of the LGBTQ is performative. Years later she has changed her tune but remains passive in her support. 3 3

Taylor isn't a gay or lesbian icon. This isn't an issue of gender. She hasn't been supportive of the LGBTQ community. Just because some in the community like her doesn't make her an icon. Sorry 1 3
Mr.X Posted June 21 Posted June 21 6 hours ago, PopKills said: I Kissed A Girl is the first song about bisexuality to hit the mainstream. Firework is one of the first music videos of a mainstream act to feature gay guys kissing each other. She has encouraged her trans friend to dress as her true gender for her Hot N Cold video. She's basically a campy drag queen at heart. hun, that was done waaaaay before her by other artists, and she is not a bissexual person herself. She was just using bissexuality to sell herself to the public. It's fine, it is what it is. but she is not a gay icon, sorry. Being 'camp' does not make you 'a drag queen at heart', specially when it is so ******* bland coming from her. It also does not make you a LGBTQIA+ icon.... Her encounraging her trans fans to be themselves is cute, for sure. But it is also just the bare ******* minimum. 1 1

Are there any artists with large gay audiences who haven't intentionally and meaningfully engaged with the LGBTQ+ community, and thus wouldn't be considered gay icons? and not trolls saying Christina Aguilera Christina Aguilera IS the LGBTQ+ Icon, and not just because she makes music that appeals to the gays. 6
loveisdead9582 Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Selena Gomez, Lorde, Mariah, Katy Perry, P!nk, Taylor, Rihanna. Most (if not all) of them have said something supportive at one point or another but I don't think any of them would be considered gay icons. 1
XDNA Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Britney is a Pop icon, but not a Gay icon, and thats okay. Just because she makes music you like doesnt make her a gay icon. All the pop girls have gay employees or friends but that doesn't make them gay icons. When has she stuck her neck out for gays with her music or a stance? Im happy to be proven wrong but nothing comes to mind. 1 1

Jay07 Posted June 21 Posted June 21 (edited) Yeah, Katy and Taylor. Some people trying to say Britney when she's probably THE biggest gay icon after Madonna and Gaga, lmao the obsession gays have with her, the outfits, the drag queen impersonations. Edited June 21 by Jay07 1 2
