Technicolor Posted June 21 Posted June 21 Shakira. She has a lot of gay latino fans but has never been very outspoken about gay rights 4

The start of her career was frat guy humor and homophobia, she wanted nothing to do with the gays. Then when she flopped she started pandering to them, not in meaningful social justice ways. She just stole their lingo and tried making it her aesthetic, wig. Iggy did the same thing. Iggy is actually a good example since they are both in the same commercial bracket now 4 3 1 1
teresaguidice Posted June 21 Posted June 21 1 hour ago, Virgos Groove said: Honestly? Most. It feels like all you need to be a gay icon nowadays is a media company calling you that. You'd think gay rights being more accepted in the mainstream would make the entry bar for being a gay icon higher (more outspoken activism, bigger connection with community), but the opposite hapenned. I'm not naming names, but... yeah. When I think of gay icons, I think of Madonna, Janet and Gaga, people who actually stood up for the community at some point, be it musically or through activism. Being liked by gays may have have been enough to make you a gay icon in the 1940s, but it's 2024 now. gay men being into diva worship and gravitating to female stars (particularly if they're fabulous but "troubled" or brash and campy) is like genetic at this point given how its been consistently happening for like a 100 years across every media medium. to be a gay icon, you just have to scratch the gay brain in a particular way, you don't actually have to be a kindness punk. i mean the OP listed britney as a gay champion when i'm pretty sure all she's ever done is say "gays are kinda like girls" when held at gunpoint to say something to her gay fans lol. 3 4

This was beyond well known. Britney is a gay champion because she's treated the entire LGBT community with nothing but dignity and EQUALITY. She never turned us into freaks for a one off song (Katy Perry) or turned her entire identity falsely around it (Lady Gaga) 2 1

Meev Posted June 21 Posted June 21 I feel that ATRL is so full of narcissistic gays that if a music act doesn't appeal to gay MEN, they are not considered 'gay icons'. Lesbian icons are also gay icons, with the likes of Pink, Avril, Billie and to an extent Taylor (with all the gaylors running around shipping her with her archnemesis Karlie). 5 1

Firework is one of the first music videos of a mainstream act to feature gay guys kissing each other. She has encouraged her trans friend to dress as her true gender for her Hot N Cold video. She's basically a campy drag queen at heart. 5 4

IKAG is NOT the first song about bisexuality or any varying sexual orientation to hit the mainstream she debuted with a song meant for the cis, straight male gaze and even has another blatantly homophobic song on her debut album. She's not a pioneer for queers, she was some secular christian wannabe that used sexuality as shock factor for attention. 8
