Aden Posted June 20 Posted June 20 It's pretty easy to identify go-to gay icons (Judy, Cher, Madonna, Kylie, Gaga, Britney, etc.) given their explicit history of vocally standing with LGBTQ+ audiences. Are there any artists with large gay audiences who haven't intentionally and meaningfully engaged with the LGBTQ+ community, and thus wouldn't be considered gay icons? 1

You'd think gay rights being more accepted in the mainstream would make the entry bar for being a gay icon higher (more outspoken activism, bigger connection with community), but the opposite hapenned. I'm not naming names, but... yeah. When I think of gay icons, I think of Madonna, Janet and Gaga, people who actually stood up for the community at some point, be it musically or through activism. Being liked by gays may have have been enough to make you a gay icon in the 1940s, but it's 2024 now. Edited June 20 by Virgos Groove 20 10

Agreed. If having a gay audience was all it truly took to be a gay icon, that would make every pop girl a gay icon by default. 2
