FOCK Posted May 13 Posted May 13 (edited) Russia has just discovered the largest oil field IN THE WORLD, with an estimated 511 BILLION barrels of oil. In comparison, the now second largest oil field has just around 80 BILLION barrels of oil in it. 511 billion barrels is 10x the amount that the North Sea produced in the last 50 years combined. This oil field is located in Antarctica, so who has access to the oil field could be up for dispute. Antarctica is currently protected by the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, which prohibits all oil developments in the area. Source Welp. Edited May 13 by FOCK

Breathe On Moi Posted May 13 Posted May 13 there's literally nothing there protecting it other than that treaty what did North West say on that song?
Buffy Posted May 13 Posted May 13 So this whole time countries have gone to wars over oil but Antarctica has been sitting on excess, untouched oil for eons? Antarctica just sitting there laughing at humanity's self-destruction 4

Dante Silva Posted May 13 Posted May 13 (edited) Exploiting an oil resource that vast will prove pretty darned quick how authentic anyone's green credentials are. Any country who is serious about switching to renewables will have the self control to leave well alone and if they don't then their true level of commitment to the planet and otherwise megalomania will be exposed for all to see. Pheromosa Posted May 13 Posted May 13 not the arctic wars but is drilling there really that practical with some of the worst weather on the planet? surely russia is the most used to it but given their current state of affairs I don't see them being able to set up refineries there any time soon
