Fantano on Radical Optimism: "A regression" "Just take a risk for once"

I would argue that Houdini was relatively risky, obviously not a HUGE risk, but it was something new. She is a pop artist at the end of the day.

I think it's fine for her to be a little laid back on this album and not push the envelope. It's still solid pop music. Had this album come after DL1, I think people would view it coming into her own, albeit more slowly than FN. But since it was FN's follow up, there were big expectations which seem to plague the perceptions of this album.

And this is no shade, but a certain pop girl who isn't Taylor released recently and presented nothing really new at all (actually the one thing that was slightly new for her was panned), but there aren't the same critiques for her. I think this era was rolled out horribly and marketed horribly, and that's the main issue because the music really isn't as bad as I think some are making it out to be. It's very solid, just not a ton of 10s.

The reviews of this guy are so overrated and basic and feel more like personal opinions. Dont get why he has such a hold in the pop world
He's also a mysoginistic. Thanks but no thanks. There are better reviewers

Im not sure every artist needs to take risks or experiment every album, Dua has found her lane and makes music for that and there is nothing wrong with that.

The album fails at other points much more glaringly.

While I like the album, he is right. She had so many opportunities to go for full analog electro, psych-pop, and even glitch pop but she chose to go full dance pop with psych droplets. ATRLiens are so predictable, especially the usual divas that run into Fantano threads to say who is this man, who cares what he thinks, and why should we care?

At least this man has a platform, with millions of fans, several celebrity shoutouts and hundreds of released reviews. Like, what are you all bringing to the table to refute his opinion other than bad breath and crusty toes. Like, gag me with a spoon, gnarly. Y'all are and will always be bothered that y'all faves are getting actual critical reviews instead of manufactured pop fluff.

The only thing Fantano is qualified to be is a pass around party bottom. He is not all that attractive, but no one is interested in his face.

He isn't right

He just speaks whatever popular on internet specifically the obnoxious critics

He will literally praise a mediocre album with no artistic progression from a man if Internet likes it

Who is Fantano and why is his opinion relevant?

Not just in this case but in general.

We live in the age when everyone can speak about everything aand if they speak about it a lot people think they actually know what you talk about.

That is why YouTube is full of "specialist" for everything without any actual knowledge, experience or education to back that up.

Who cares about his opinion ? Radical Optimism is very good and excellent for summer.  Clearly my summer album :lee2:

He's always gone hard with dance/ pop and questioned its validity. He is the archetype of straight U.S. critics/ music consumers/ radio programmers who low key hate the genre in all its forms.

It's those bland, unseasoned midtempos that drag it down a lot.

I like her voice in those though, some bits of These walls are soooooo gooood it's too bad that the songs are not super-catchy

Sorry for the many messages but if I had to choose what I listen to between Dua's album, Taylor, even Ari! I'd choose Delusional Optimism because it's actually good! (They're all good, but just good)

Why didn't she drop it around the same time as barbie with summer aesthetics

Can you all stop with this guy seriously? If we want to know his opinion on albums, we can subscribe to his channel:rip:

I agree but the album is still a cute polished pop record for the summer

Petition to outlaw all Fantano threads, every last one of them. Positive or negative reviews of artists I love or artists I don't care for; no exceptions!

Not sure why people care what some rando thinks

!!!

Never understood that trend of caring about what a random person on the internet whose ego is big enough to have a channel to record his reactions to various works, has to say and act like his opinions are more important than anyone else's :deadbanana2:

Btw it's kind of sad to not appreciate Radical Optimism for what it is: a not pretentious album made to make you dance all summer long. It's such a great album. Maybe not as good as Future Nostalgia but it's very solid and addictive. Enjoy the music for once ATRL - challenge.

I love that you think that way because as per usual you're wrong. Tell me how what he said was any different than every other person on this site. He said she should have taken more risks. Also, you don't have to be attractive to review music, if the prerequisite for someone to be qualified to review music is to look pretty and serve face, no wonder your musical takes are the way that they are. Like, who cares how he looks,  at least he is giving an honest review of a popular album. I will be honest, some of these optimistic reviews and videos with hot guys listening patreon-selected music might have tricked your brain into thinking that is what music critique is.

Constructive Criticism is needed for artist development, I want Dua to give something, unlike FN, Debut and RO next album. Lil Yachty gave us a psychedelic rock album and everyone loved it. Dua could go punk, she could go trance, she could go future bass, and she has the funds to do so. Besides little restraint from her label, she is at the point in her career where she should be making her lane.

It wouldn't say it's a regression. It's just kind of there. It's a fun, summery pop album, but it certainly does lack ambition.

I'm just glad she didn't pander to the American market and stuck to a more European sensability.

She needs to put out a re-release/deluxe fast, with a sure-fire hit (that sounds nothing like her album) as the next single. Maybe add a feature. That'll tie people over until she can course correct with a new album ( to be released no later than Q4 next year).

I think this is the only way forward. Pivot quickly and come back hard with something game changing. Get back in the studio and drop a single as soon as its ready. If it does well, record the album for release early next year.

Dua really set herself up by setting the bar so high up for herself with FN. FN is truly one of a lifetime masterpiece. Idk if she has it in her to make another record on that same level of excellence...
