Zeferino Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Antisemitism 😔 jk idk tbh not mentioned but Adam Lambert deserved better imo
Archetype Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Sam is a better artist IMO. Their first few singles and album was very strong and came out around the same time as Adele. The GP knows who Sam is and they'll always love their earlier music and collabs with Disclosure. Troye had to work his way up gradually to fame, and even now, he's still not a household name in much of the west. 1 1

They were taken seriously as musician / songwriter (hence the Grammy nods) - they also built loyal and mature following. Whereas Troye Sivan, initially started as Youtuber, most of his fans are of younger lgbtq+ audience. 1 hour ago, GentleEarthquake said: Didn't Sam pander to the straights in the beginning of their career? This. Sam started as another boring Adele / Ed Sheeran, doing basic music with mass-appeal. 1 2

Rotunda Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Sam is still benefiting from the GP goodwill they generated when they were first starting out. Every few months you'll see a viral TikTok/tweet about Latch from someone who knows nothing about Sam's new image. 1 1

Troye is a YouTuber who succesfully branched out to a proper singing career. Troye's coming out and his Journey was far more interwined in both lyrical as visual content of his music. Came here to write this. Sam's first few albums (at least their singles, haven't really listened to the rest) made a very cognizant effort to avoid gender pronouns to make the music more appealing to a wider audience. After they started expressing their sexuality and gender more openly during their last two albums, their music hasn't been as commercially succesful. I truly believe Unholy was a one-off less to do with Sam Smith and more to do with TikTok as well as an unbelievably catchy chorus. Troye, conversely, has always expressed his sexuality publicly. I may be cynical, but I truly believe that even in today's world a gay man who openly expresses their sexuality in how they dress, speak and act simply cannot be that huge of an artist. When only 70 % of Americans think homosexuality should even be accepted in society, one's odds of success are quite significantly reduced if 30 % of people likely disregard your music purely based on your sexuality. That's even without commenting on the subliminal and sometimes overt biases which a bunch of that 70 % hold towards gay people. 4 1 2

I'm not saying that they are not able to have success of any kind or trying to denote the successes of either Sam or Troye. Furthermore, we should celebrate gay artists when they do achieve mainstream success of any kind. I don't understand your or anyone's need to pit them against each other. 1
Filpo Posted May 1 Posted May 1 Spotify daily streams 2024/04/23 Gloria: 996,386 Something To Give Each Other: 1,417,160 Seems like mainstream artist Sam Smith isn't doing that better than niche youtuber Troye Sivan, despite the mega smash Unholy 1
B-Luke Posted May 1 Posted May 1 More distinct, charismatic (and polarizing) image along with a great voice that is loved by the GP, no matter the antics. That said I like both their music. 1
