Iraq's parliament passed a law criminalising same-sex relationships with a maximum 15-year prison sentence on Saturday, in a move it said aimed to uphold religious values but was condemned by rights advocates as the latest attack on the LGBT community in Iraq.

The law aims to "protect Iraqi society from moral depravity and the calls for homosexuality that have overtaken the world," according to a copy of the law seen by Reuters.

It was backed mainly by conservative Shi'ite Muslim parties who form the largest coalition in mainly Muslim Iraq's parliament.

The bill had initially included the death penalty for same-sex acts but was amended before being passed after strong opposition from the United States and European nations.

The Law on Combating Prostitution and Homosexuality bans same-sex relations with at least 10 years and a maximum of 15 years in prison, and mandates at least seven years in prison for anybody who promotes homosexuality or prostitution.

I'm surprised it wasn't already criminalised considering how targetted gay people have been in Iraq, but the fact that it's being criminalised in 2024 is even more ludicrous. Just shows how hatred has been running deep even outside legal or religious grounds. My heart goes out to the LGBT community living there.

And I'm supposed to believe the Western ******* on this website care about the well being of Iraqi (Middle Eastern) gays? ......lol

OT - They have a billion other things to be worrying about. I'm kind of shocked it took them this long to do this considering how horrible the situation is for our community in Iraq. My heart is with all my sisters and brothers there. :chick3:

It's sad and scary, but homophobia is currently growing worldwide. If Trump wins in America it will be bleak for LGBTs in America too. Here in Europe, the right is becoming more popular, even among younger generations. It makes me sad. I had thought in the 2000s that we would fight homophobia completely and we could live without fear and now the world is going backwards in this regard.

This. I wish all these raptures would happen already and take these braindead psychos with it so the rest of us can move the world forward.

Just horrible. I hope every gay person in Iraq can find a way to live safely or leave the country.

Yes, but coming in here to spew nonsense about Palestinians just because they are both Middle Eastern countries is a bit weird

New queer people are born every day.  That might be feasible for adults and older teenagers, but not for children and most teens. :(

There are so many sects of Islam ranging from progressive-leaning to extremely conservative.  Being Muslim doesn't mean you're any more homophobic than a random Christian in certain parts of the world, it depends on the context.

Girlies, you're ironically literally proving that your concerns are Western-centric and you only view queer people from the Middle East as pawns when your main concern is...how will other Westerners, who you hate for being leftists, will react.

This is horrible news. It also reassures me that I cannot vote for Joe Biden in November.

I think America's borders should be open to all queer refugees of the world. Centrist Dems like Joe Biden want to get rid of asylum. There is apparently no lesser evil.

I assume you agree all Western nations must have open borders for our queer brothers and sisters @Kimbra @LadyDiana #NoRefugeeIsIllegal

I always wonder how these ATRLers who are SO concerned and worried about queer people in the Middle East feel about asylum/immigration laws in Europe and America. I mean we both know the answer but I would love to hear them say it with their chest. :celestial5:
