I have fun with playful lyrics when i listen to Mariah Carey or Bjork. The two legendary acts who did NOT force themselves as the best lyricist in the industry but became one by proving themselves every album. Her lyrics are embarrassing and it always has been. And you are saying "they just hate Taylor" well i guess all those high scores she ever got was because "they just love Taylor" because there is no other way her simple voice, terrible performing skills and cringe writing style can be this much praised. EW.

You literally hate her so nothing I say will make you feel differently about her. Have fun in her panned era I guess? While I enjoy my favorite albums since Midnights.

Taylor is usually cringe to begin with so i didn't really think much of it when the album title dropped. I mean calling the album The Tortured Poets Department is pretentious and really cringe. And the worst part is she actually thinks the lyrics on this album are poetic? She has too many yes men around her.

my two cents is that the consensus score is perfectly right. some of the reviews are weird and poorly written imo but that applies to both good and bad scores.

this is a good album but it's far from her best imo so it's only correct that it doesn't have her highest metascore. and let's not act like 77 is bad.

The Anthology score is plain wrong tho :eli:

Taylor truly thought that "more words = poetic"

:suburban:

I like how this album is separating her fan base by the people who actually think about how words and lyrics connect vs those who just are impressed by verbiage :suburban:

They let her go too far with narcissism line from Anti-Hero

She and her fans are too pretentious for the twee teenage tripe she writes.  Those undeserved aotys gassed her up.  She has never made a masterpiece album.  A forever adolescent Karen and her coven of fellow victims.

I think the album title and song titles were meant to be cheeky rather than pretentious.

Like she definitely seems to be poking fun at her own melodramatic tendencies, but that's very hard to pull off without making your art also seem cringe.

I mean… I'm reading a lot of posts trying to take in both sides. But… I don't know what to say, it's just not a good album… and that's almost by definition. :rip:

Are there good songs? Absolutely.

But what 31 track full length 2 hour album wouldn't fall under its own weight? Drake couldn't pull it off, Chris Brown couldn't pull it off, not even any of the main pop girls could pull it off. It's almost impossible. Even on Cowboy Carter, at least 7 out of the 27 tracks are interludes.

Taylor set herself up for failure. It's like she tried to combine two album concepts into one and crossed her fingers that her personal life would act as the thread tying everything together.

But even then, "Trilogy" is actually a compilation of three mixtapes released the previous year, each of which were intricately and deliberately crafted as chapters of the overarching story told. So, there's a proper, cohesive narrative from beginning to end rather than a scattered selection of songs without much thought put into how they flow sonically and thematically. Not to mention Abel himself recommends new fans to listen to the individual mixtapes first and then listen to the compilation (which features three bonus tracks bridging the gap between each disc).

This exception aside, I couldn't agree more with what you wrote. It's hard to call the 31-track version of "THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT" a good album, let alone a real body of work. People have different criteria when it comes to their perception of what makes a good project, of course, but even many Swifties have their own personal tracklists removing the songs they're not as fond of or deem as filler - which are typically at least one third of the album from what I've gathered.

Also, the fact "THE ANTHOLOGY" was released as a surprise only cheapens it more, because there was potential had she promoted it from the get-go as a triple/28+ track album, reworking the tracklist to integrate the songs from both parts into a more smoothly flowing and narrative-driven whole. As it is, I find it not different than the repetitive and unnecessarily long projects released by Drake, Morgan Wallen, and Chris Brown made to maximize streams. It becomes much less about artistry and more about complacency, lack of effort, and greed.

Accidental double post, my bad. There was an error that led me to upload the same comment twice.

But yeah, if anyone wants a 30+ track album that justifies its length, takes genuine ambitious risks throughout, explores different genres while still cohesive, and depicts the mindset of a troubled and tortured protagonist through a coherent, intense, and haunting story, feel free to check out "Trilogy" by The Weeknd. :coffee:

well, if so, those are some cheques that actually work not like those for TTH streams!!!!!

OT: The album is a grower ladies and gentleman!!

It deserves a yellow score at MC, but her reputation and the respect she got since folkmore is saving it.

I hope she remembers how to make a great album after that. I'm sure she wasn't expecting this kind of reception.

Jack and Aaron must go. I like Jack's work with Lana, but with Taylor it isn't working anymore. Aaron's part of the album is just... terrible, I didn't like ANY of the songs.

I know Taylor is probably freaking out, but I think she will grow from this. She can do a lot better.
