It's funny because I always thought both Paper Rings AND Afterglow should have been singles aside from the obvious Cruel Summer and ppl used to clown me for it but now look at the receipts! Afterglow gets the most streams and Paper Rings went viral randomly lol!

in a ideal world, this is what the singles would have looked like imo:

1. Paper Rings (sounds like a Avril Lavigne "The Best Damn Thing" era throwback song that could have been a hit back in 2019)

2. You Need to Calm Down (Taylor CLEARLY wanted to become a obvious LGBTQ+ ally so let her have this as a single since YNTCD aint that bad overall tbh)

3. Lover

4. Afterglow

(Cruel Summer could have also been a single but like many have said...idk if it would have been big back then so in this timeline let's just leave it as a album track I guess)

Exactly how it should have went :coffee2:

PREACH! Paper Rings was a SUPER SMASH waiting to have happened if it was given the exposure of lead single. Always thought this way. It fits the theme of Lover as well so idk what she was thinking on that one.

I Forgot That You Existed is so bad it's not even funny.

Just for fun, I think for the terrible songs I'm gonna try to find a redeeming quality just to show how much reach is needed to "save" the songs. And for IFTYE, I'll say that the song could have been interesting narratively as a "turning the page" on the previous trainweck that was snakegate.

Actually love @Achilles. description that this album is more a PR statement that a proper album. That's true for a lot of songs.

On the contrary @Cruel Summer is actually an amazing pop song. Loved it before the Eras Tour, love it even more now. What a moment in her career.

Now imagine if it was the opening track of the album and the lead single. That alone would have made Lover a better album, even without changing anything else.

I don't think I can wait any longer!!!

Listening to the IFTYE voice memo was one of my lowest Taylor stan moments for sure.

well. folklore exists thanks to Lover tankery so everything is good

"We can leave the Christmas light up till January"... our edgy fav :clownny:

Seriously though, Lover is not my favorite song, but it is a decent one. It's just simply a beautiful song, nothing extraordinary, nothing bad. The bridge has a lyric I love very much "With every guitar string scar on my hand I take this magnetic force of a man to be my lover". It's lovely.

Oh The Man... of course we could not continue on the good path of Cruel Summer -> Lover. The worst part of that song is that I'm soooo sure Taylor thought she was doing something while writing it. Embarrassing.

Let me already back off on finding a redeeming quality for this one. There's literally no saving it.

And if I said Taylor's seemingly desperate grip onto a youthful persona and the geriatric popstar comments during the Lover era are likely in part because of discussions she might've had with Joebless?

It's been theorized many times that he stuck with her in the beginning because he thought she was on the way out — then something switched with Red TV and he couldn't handle Taylor Swift because of his crippling male insecurity.

This assumption only makes Bejeweled more revelatory and I can't wait to see what TTPD has to say on the topic. :gaycat6:

I'm not going to be loved for this, but The Archer is so mid. Like for a track 5 this is soooo surface level. I'm sure Swifties would not care for it if it wasn't a track 5 and you can't change my mind on this. It's not a bad song by any means, but absolutely nothing to write home about.

It's such a nothing song on The Eras Tour and I wish she'll change it for an actual moment on the setlist that is coming later.

I Think He Knows is a song I have a different opinion on depending on my mood. It's either I don't mind it but not dig it either, and at other times I'm going ballistic. It's weird but we cannot be too picky on Lover

Let's say it's a 5 or 8 depending on the mood.

I think ITHK is fine lyrically but both her vocals and the production are so grating on the ears that it's one of her most unlistenable songs. Better not be anything like that on Poets.

Now Miss Americana... that is a MOMENT. My second favorite song on the album. Once again a PR statement but more intelligent that what we had so far (and the only smart PR statement on this album). The production is amazing and the melodies are melodying.

So glad it has a mini-moment to shine on The Eras Tour thanks to one of the most inconsequential line in the song, that has now become one of the greatest lines of all time.
