OR3: Should Olivia re-invent? Abandon pop/rock or lean more into it?

The tracks she released for the reissue of GUTS sound more acoustic so I wouldn't be surprised if she goes into that route for her next project. But I really like the sound of GUTS, I think she has managed to find the perfect balance between pop/rock and ballads. I really like her pop rock songs though, they're the highlights for me.

She needs to move on. She's clearly not hittin the same heighs with her pop rock. The ballad lane is also boring.

Her next album should be experimental like Red :giraffe:   but dont go too "pink commercial"  "cutesy commercial"  like Katy or Avril Lavigne
stay edgy and with great songwriting
Balance the best from both worlds.

I think her next album should have different genres:

Modern Synthpop and Very Pop / New Wave? -Retro  (i think this should be the next step for her)
Evolved Rock Tracks-Grunge-Gothic-NuMetal-Industrial (In case of rock havin a momentum again with Beyonce-Gaga)
Folky or Something different.  Americana? Electro-Folk?
Maybe Asian Music? Play with her roots?
Chiptune?Videogame like music?  Make music for the Gen Alpha audiences? lol

Her next albums should be longer than Guts and More diverse. Dan ***** but also new producers :gaycat1:

she has already hinted that OR3 will be folk/country by the guests in her concerts.

i'm not a fan of her pop rock songs (except BIR) but if that's what she loves doing then she shouldn't switch it up

Tbh she should do a song like Espresso that's youthful and sexy, rather than serving bratty teen

Olivia's entire discography right now can be sliced into two clean halves: pop- rock and acoustic ballads. And this is a problem. It's a very limited range and this shtick will get boring by the third album.

I'm glad she's found her sound and her niche but she needs to diversify her palette. Give us some innovation. Give us something daring or different. She has the fanbase and the commercial appeal to take some risks with a third album.

hmm kinda right. i think Hunger Games soundtrack is pretty recent too. so it feels like an indication of her growth, rather than the deluxe tracks since they were GUTS rejects. but i think her mind isn't set yet. "so american" was like a random drop for her, and recording of it feels like a spur of the moment & the stans liked the result.

while the 2 categories is true, i wouldn't say her range is totally limited. where does "happier" fall into this then? and i feel like "deja vu" "love is embarrassing" and "so american" are different sub-genre's of pop/rock, and i think she could lean in to alt-side of it. rather than the teen angsty part, which i hope she drops now since she's 20.

i do agree with the risks though. she has the fanbase & commercial appeal. for example, g4u was a risk at the time. who knew it would blow up like it did for the sound that it has. i can see her giving something new, but not being so inauthentic to the music she wants to make.

The irreverent type of riott grrrl-esque / punk sonic aesthetic that she's been bringing to the mainstream is a unique lane for a pop act and authentic to her taste and musical influences. I wouldn't change that. It also allows her to showcase her theatrical performance style. That said, I could see her leaning more into her folksy Fleetwood Mac bag more next time around. I think the main thing that *should* evolve is the subject matter of her next work.

Given her established sound it now makes sense for her to be produced by Rob Cavallo in the near future also.  Other names her label need to hook her up with include Rick Rubin and Rick Nowels.

Aren't those three producers old?

Travis Barker? Yes or no :dancehall:

Nah. He's more alternative while Olivia is a full-on popgirl.

Do the tattoos on on your idols arm make her arm look like it belongs to a type of human she does not identify herself as being?

Selfishly I wish she would go back to making full pop bops :monkey:

I would also love to hear an early 2000s influenced album (a la Fantasize and Gloss unreleased by Ariana) in the vein of her Christmas classic, "The Bels" :jonnycat:

Checklist:

- Drop Dan N****

- Lean into new-wave or something my synth-y

- Record songs like Stick Season, LIE, PIP, and So American

- Release ballads like CCMN and MTB

- Ditch the color purple and the butterflies as aesthetics

Something like Dido's debut, lean into some trance, ambient music.

+ Some rap collabs, her Stan is coming!
