Peroxide Posted April 6 Posted April 6 5 hours ago, Cruel Summer said: I think that it's possible, but it's still a tall order. While she has the benefit of coming off of the immense first half of the Eras tour, the hype around Midnights was truly insane. When there's basically nobody around who can do half of what Midnights did in its first week, tying it is surely not an easy feat even for Taylor. 1989 TV managed to do even better, but I think that was more tangibly in the center of the peak of Eras Tour hype and it was, obviously, her biggest album getting its second life at the perfect moment, so that was a special case. While I don't really believe in overexposure as a concept, we also have to consider how some fans seemed upset about the variants having separate bonus tracks, and how the internet at large tried weirdly hard to seize on some frankly ridiculous **** on the night of the Grammys - there's at least a tiny bit of exhaustion in the market. Given all that and the relative silence she and her team have had since the announcement, I wouldn't be too shocked or disappointed if TTPD "only" debuted over a million but didn't crack the Midnights/1989 TV barrier. That's a very interesting take. Even though Taylor has been dealing with more backlash post Eras tour (Matty, carbon footprint, the Celine thing, being a billionaire, merch, variants… simply just existing) her celebrity feels so much bigger compared to where she was before Midnights dropped. She's literally inescapable. I would be absolutely shocked if TTPD debuts with less streams and sales than Midnights… I'm still confident she's doing over 2M first week. However this is top of the mountain… I can't see her growing any bigger.
Arrows Posted April 6 Posted April 6 TTPD will end up her second biggest album, after 1989. Bookmark me. 1

Hunter_13 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Probably not tbh. She'll probably clear 1M first week again though so that's perfectly fine.

CherryBay Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Not in this climate without promo or singles and with no signed copies this time around

spiritboy Posted April 6 Posted April 6 She's so big right now that anything under 1 million for the opening week would be a flop/underperformance for her standarts.
ithinkheknowsoutsold Posted April 6 Posted April 6 (edited) Y'all are underestimating Taylor's selling capacity, which once again showcases ATRL's hidden misogyny and ageism. There's no one else on Taylor's level at the moment, nor has there been someone this big this whole century. The people saying it will do 750K will eat their words when she breaks 25's record, the hype is actually insane at the moment. Edited April 6 by ithinkheknowsoutsold 1
TheArgonaut Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Nobody expected Midnights numbers, we all thought 1 million debuts were long gone and swifties were praying for it to even come close and then she went and sold 1.6 million. Nothing is written in the books with this woman. I refrain from making predictions anymore, but if I had to, I would say yes.

Now 750k is obviously purposely downplaying her but thinking she's coming for 25's record is even more of a fallacy. 2

Mr. Duff Posted April 6 Posted April 6 It will definitely go at least 1.5-2mill, but that's the stretch of it. Whoever is predicting about reaching 25's debut sales week is batshit crazy and delusional. I do believe it can outsell both Midnights and 1989TV but the longevity depends on how the era is handled. The Eras tour is a little bit too focused about Lover and Midnights (and folklore) at the moment based on what songs go viral and get talked about, so I hope TTPD gets its proper era treatment for a bit of longevity.

Strawberry Bubble Posted April 6 Posted April 6 Yes, but only if the music is good. We're in the midst of Taylormania's peak, and 'Midnights' has garnered mixed reviews even among Swifties. But it really depends on the sound (A music album like 'Folklore,' which is a gem but may not appeal to the general public, won't pose a competitive threat to 'Midnights').
naval23 Posted April 6 Posted April 6 I think it'll be like Reputation - bigger first week sales but a decline overall
Gladiator Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Yes it will, and it will be regarded in the future as her magnum opus.
The7thStranger Posted April 7 Posted April 7 Very possible, but definitely not guaranteed once Taylormania starts to cool off. It will assuredly be a big hit, though.
