The7thStranger Posted April 7 Posted April 7 (edited) At this point... essentially none. Music isn't subversive anymore. There are some who are following in the footsteps of giants and doing a very good job, but innovative and groundbreaking? Eh. Beyoncé comes the closest. Edit: To be clear, I am referring to the music. Of course, many are still challenging the norms socially, in particular Sam Smith. Edited April 7 by The7thStranger
Bubble Tea Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Charli XCX is literally an innovator and always pushing the boundaries.
Phaunzie Posted April 8 Posted April 8 (edited) Doja, Billie & Lil Nas X, those three have been pushing boundaries in the visuals, music videos and performances. Other girls can't keep up with their eccentric and eclectic eras. Beyonce gets a special mention but, she doesn't count because the OP asked about artists after the Autobiographic pop trend. One more mention is Ava Max but you already know that. The ROBLOX legends and pioneer of Videogame Music Marketing, Ava Max is the true innovator of pop this generation. Like she made Billboard count ROBLOX numbers, a legend. The MJ of this generation, like he did for MTV, she did for ROBLEX. She is about to bring in a new age of PGG Pop Gamer Girls. Lovett Posted April 8 Posted April 8 Beyoncé has just become the first ever black woman to reach #1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart. The chart has been running for 60 years. That is by definition ground breaking. 3 2
TMRA Posted April 8 Posted April 8 When it comes to music and art its Beyonce obviously, her evolution is INSANE. On the music buisness side its Taylor, you can say she doesnt take drastic risks and experiments with her music but everything else she is doing is insane. Lady Gaga used to be like this, innovative performances, switching between pop, jazz, country, rock, movie industry..she can do it all 1
TROJAN Posted April 8 Posted April 8 3 hours ago, The Pop Hub said: not gaga i know that for sure! What have you done that's innovative? 3
Alldeezy Posted April 8 Posted April 8 None has been to me since Rihanna maybe tinashe by a little but that's it
PoisonPill Posted April 9 Posted April 9 (edited) MPG status requires that you make yourself into a brand and pump out product that the masses will consume enough to put you at the top of the charts. So it's sort of antithetical to innovation and risk-taking. I would say that Ms. Knowles-Carter is the only one that fits that bill right now musically, but she pretty much ascended above MPG tier after Self Titled. Edited April 9 by PoisonPill
fememeist Posted April 10 Posted April 10 (edited) Beyoncé easily, and maybe ariana Edited April 10 by fememeist
Storm653 Posted April 10 Posted April 10 If we're talking about attempts and not quality, Christina Aguilera is in the conservation as well.
Aden Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Plenty of artists are innovative but if we're talking ATRL's general faves: Bey for obvious reasons. Miley. She doesn't grt enough credit for how many genres she's hopped through. Gaga. The things she's doing with Hildur Guonadottir for Joker are musically innovative and her seamless expansion into acting is extremely rare, especially in an industry hostile to popstars. Madonna. The Celebration Tour has had incredibly innovative staging, visuals, art direction, and choreography.
MatiRod Posted April 11 Posted April 11 (edited) Rosalia. 'Motomami' was insane, some of those sounds have never been heard in the mainstream. Like, who combines a nasty electro reggaeton bassline with a jazz break? Beyonce is trying new things with each album as well. Lemonade spanned multiple genres. The Gift had a heavy afrobeats influence. Renaissance disco. Cowboy Carter country. And she puts on a unique spin on each. Edited April 11 by MatiRod
Digitalism Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Main pop girls are not really innovative They just steal from smaller artists and it always have been like that
Pillz Posted April 11 Posted April 11 This list would include Lana if it was 10 years ago, but I wouldn't call her new music "groundbreaking" even though it is still very well executed and sounds gorgeous.
Kassi Posted April 11 Posted April 11 Obviously Beyoncé. I still can't believe Alien Superstar is a real song. Let alone released by the Crazy In Love, Halo, Drunk In Love singer. It doesn't sound like anything familiar, but it's also not alienating (no pun intended). The industrial beat, the DJ intro, the spoken word first verse, the lush, string driven chorus, the rapped second verse, the spacey outro. Gaga did her big one with Born This Way, still a standpoint piece of pop music history. But she's reverted back to traditional pop sounds since. Lana has always been groundbreaking. Billie has a unique vision and impeccable execution, especially for how young she is. There might be others like Tinashe, but that's pretty much the list for mainstream pop girls.
