Does Katy Perry deserve to be panned ?

Most of Katy Perry album are panned (witness, smile, teenage dream, one of the boys) and even prism only managed to get 61 on metacritic. Why is Katy Perry panned ? Is her writing bad or does she work with the wrong producers ? do you think she deserves higher scores ?

her music wouldn't be panned if it was actually good. it's that simple

Objectively yes, but seeing the scores pop albums get these days then no

Yes. A few great singles can't make up for the endless filler on her albums (and yes, that includes TD).

No not really, there's NO reason an album like One of the Boys deserves a 47 on Metacritic

I'm not a fan of her albums and don't use them but she is objectively under appreciated on Metacritic as many other female artists. Teenage Dream's score alone is shocking. If the same album was released today by someone currently popular it'd end up at 90.

Her albums have fillers for sure and her singles are the songs that shine the most but she was just being a critics' target.

As a Katycat, apart from OOTB (and to a lesser extent Smile) Katy's albums just aren't very cohesive as full bodies of work (even if most of the tracks at an individual level are good). But considering how they'll throw a good review at anything these days she deserves better

No - Katy's albums, in my view, don't deserve the low scores they have garnered on platforms like Metacritic. Historically, there's been a bias against pop music, often dismissed as superficial and lacking in depth or genuine artistry. This viewpoint has led to an undervaluing of pop artists and their work, Katy included. However, the tide has turned in recent years. The critical landscape has shifted, and there's now a greater appreciation for the complexity and value of pop music. This change is evident when comparing reviews of pop albums from today with those from the early 2010s.

It's not to say that Katy's work would suddenly receive universal acclaim or extremely high ratings if released in today's more accepting climate. But, I do believe that albums like 'Teenage Dream' and 'Prism' would receive much higher scores and be seen in a more positive light if they were to debut in the current era. The critical panning these albums received at the time reflected a broader cultural undervaluation of pop music, rather than a fair assessment of Perry's artistry and the albums' quality.”

Why does teenage dream deserve acclaim ? Apart from the hit singles what does it offer as an album ? The themes seem to be all over the place

Witness and smile were released under poptimism though. Maybe she's just untalented.

I guess it has to be more with the way she has approached music so far, and the lack of quality content in her work.

No.

Teenage Dream alone has more quality/impact than some recent pop albums with higher scores.

Her first three albums are pretty solid. Not like 90 worthy, but at LEAST 70s eaxh.

No, She is judged unfairly & It's Really not fair. Her first 3 albums deserve 70-85 scores & Witness isn't that bad either.

People just like to clown her for whatever reason but she has fantastic music.

let's not forger that Katy is still a hate vehicle for many reviewers still. like someone mentioned before, had these albums been released by any other Pop artist at the time they would have much higher scores.
