I would say the one that's still relevant in 2024 despite debuting earlier

different touring climates

can we say gaga tfm >>> britney bomt + oops because tfm tour alone grossed more than their tours combined?

Honestly as someone who lived through that period, the kind of audience Gaga's music reached was wider and she had more credibility from the media and the public, her touring power was way way bigger than Britney's from the very start. She was doing stadiums two years into her career, idk anyone since that has managed to do that so quickly. She had the pop fans but also that Elton esque piano rock side to her. She was never accused of lip synching either.

But in terms of records sold, Britney sold like 50 million albums in 2.5 years after BOMT came out. Then again, Gaga sold like 100 million singles in her first 2.5 years after The Fame came out. They were both absolutely massive and world famous. Hard to compare and say who was actually biggest.

they're just not really comparable.

taylor's cultural impact rn revolves entirely around her 'fighting the power' narrative (re: the masters and tvs etc) and the unprecedented commercial success she is achieving through her eras' tour. ALL the discussion surrounding taylor rn is about her incredible achievements over the past couple of years.

gaga's 'imperial' era was about the artistry and the music and the publicity stunts and the crazy outfits and the smash hits. People wanted to know what she was going to do next or wear next because it was guaranteed to be interesting, whether you liked it or not.

which isn't a criticism of taylor's artistry or anything, it's just not what this era of hers is about. in a weird way it's like she's almost famous for being famous now? idk

raw numbers like this are deceptive tho. we all know the eras tour is obliterating every tour ever. as for the others, how many dates were included? how expensive were the tickets? how many countries were included? never mind inflation or demographics.

taylor’s current popularity reminds me of bts’ peak in korea where every single articles and tv reports about them was more about which record they broke and how many copies they sold on release day than the actual music and artistry

Sales? Taylor. Culturally? Gaga. Both of Gaga’s albums mentioned were before streaming was really big so it’s kind of hard to truly compare the two. While Taylor definitely outsold in numbers, Gaga was THE moment in that era amidst the onslaught of pop excellence being released.

Current Taylor is bigger than the fame gaga. Reason why gagas felt bigger was because it was her debut, and she’d declined ever since. Taylor is the opposite trajectory

There really is no competition, Taylor is in her own league at this point.

Gaga reaches all types of different culture and diversity overall and not exclusive to white women.

Gaga's eras were HUGE. Lots of buzz and lots of interest. As she came out with fresh ideas and actual concepts of being the "cool freak".

Media did them a favor, because the music was trash. And what artistry?  :rip:

Gaga’s peak felt bigger because most people were watching the same shows listening to the same music and consuming very similar media back in the late 00s early 10s.

Taylor doing all she’s doing while the gp isn’t focused on one thing is crazy so I’d say she’s bigger.

People comparing two AOTY winners to that generic radio hits compilation and an unlistenable mess only gays like and talking about "artistry" :suburban:

Yet it wasn’t as widely used as it is now.
Streaming services were in their infancy

Youtube was very small. There was still a general pop culture that people payed attention to during Gaga’s peak. That has shifted majorly and most people live in their own pop culture bubbles.
