Slap Posted March 2 Posted March 2 There are deep wounds and trauma in the stan community, all you need to do is mention Ashanti to trigger a nervous system response from JLo fans or Firecracker sample to send Lambs into a misogynistic tirade. But like all things, Stan culture needs to evolve and heal its wounds so we can properly support the artists we love. Being a Stan is traumatic, and both these fanbases have survived numerous flop and backlash eras. Use this thread to share how these events have deeply affected your life and how the ensuing conflict has impacted you as a stan, and then try to say one nice thing about the other artist. Together we can heal. 1 1
Grown K Posted March 2 Posted March 2 The truth is Mariah hates JLo for something JLo couldn't even control. She was married to Tommy Mottolla so she knows how controling he his so JLo wasn't the one calling the shots. She's not even singing in a lot of her songs... 3 1

I’m a Mariah Stan but Tommy was using everybody at the time to take down Mariah. He even used Destiny Child to block Loverboy. I can totally understand why Mariah didn’t like what JLo represented (due to Tommy’s actions) but they aren’t in competition with one another anymore and have very discretely separate lanes in the industry where they are actually at the top of their game in their own ways. Tommy is the problem, but what I don’t get is why Stan’s still hold onto the JLo thing when Mariah’s legacy isn’t threatened by JLo at all in any way - like the industry doesn’t put them against each other the way their Stans do because it’s kind of stupid to compare them, JLo doesn’t pretend to be a Mariah and Mariah wouldn’t ever pretend to be a JLo and thank god for that because they’re both incredible in their own ways and music is richer for their contributions whether Mariah for bringing rappers into mainstream RnB or JLo bringing Latin pop to the mainstream in the US. I’m Real (remix and original), Loverboy and If We are all amazing songs and I love them all even more knowing the story behind them. I think the Candy version of Loverboy is superior and I can’t imagine a world where we didn’t get it - it was iconic. I don’t think Mariah still has issues with JLo and I think she realised the meme and folklore that has been built around it benefits both of them and their interesting legacies as artists. 1

I remember her saying on Colbert or WWHL or one of those shows that the Loverboy situation was so traumatic for her because it started a chain reaction of events. Tommy's sabotage reached a crescendo in that moment and Mariah having to change the song last minute after the stolen idea, the nonstop engagements, and the subsequent lack of sleep resulted in her mental health taking a turn for the worse (i.e. the "breakdown" and hospitalizations). I can understand why something as truly traumatic as that sticks with her and she likely knows more than us about JLo's involvement (or things that happened/were said behind the scenes). But I do think the chain reaction it caused is a big part of why it's still a pain point for her. Despite the twitter caption, she does specify Mottola being behind both songs being lifted. She hasn't talked about JLo specifically outside of this section of her memoir in quite a few years (Stella Era, I believe). I think she has moved on, but the memories of 2001 will always be a sore spot for her. And she does seem to still get a kick out of "idk her" memes whenever they pop up. 1
James_Dean Posted March 2 Posted March 2 It's funny for me, cause since I was a child, I have stanned both these women so hard. I'm praying for the day they know each other 3 2
Mandalay Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Hmm, Jlo was more than happy to play Tommy Motorola's puppet. OT: As a Mariah fan, we love everybody. 1 1 2
Stankonia Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Love Mariah downe but I'll never understand why she hates J.Lo to this day when she says it herself that it was Tommy trying to sabotage her and when J. Lo has said that she wasn't even aware of the shenanigans at the time. Yellow Magic Orchestra's Firecracker was sampled 18 times before Mariah or J.Lo even thought of sampling it too. Why is Mariah/her stans acting like she owns the damn song? Do you guys even realize that this kind of stuff happens all the time behind the scenes? How many messy stories have we heard about demos/ideas for songs being shopped around to different artists? Besides I'm Real sounds very different than Loverboy and Loverboy sounds MUCH better with the Cameo sample than it does with the Firecracker one. If anything she should be thankful for J. Legend forcing her to rework the song and make it better As for Ja Rule he was a hot commodity at the time and he just had a string of crossover hits, why wouldn't J. Lo want to collaborate with him? Does Mariah own Ja Rule too? Let's all be so for real, Jennifer has done nothing to warrant such animosity. Honestly I admire Jen for always remaining so gracious when it comes to this one-sided feud and for never reciprocating Mariah's nasty energy. Couldn't be me. I really hope they'll mend things eventually. The forced J. Lo hate has got to stop 1 4 4

stevyy Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Maybe it would help if J.Lo's producers would stop laughing and mocking Mariah. One of them laughed at the story when Tommy pulled a knife at Mariah's face when she told him, she was leaving him. The person was also in the room and said: "It wasn't that bad...!" Well... Downplaying a woman's dramatic experience is never a good look.
stevyy Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Now, my personal opinion: I do not even care and I've listened to J.Lo's new album like crazy. This is Me Now... is my 5th most played album of 2024 so far (272 streams so far). Violence incides violence and I will not engage.
Burn Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Mariah doesn’t hate J.Lo. She just doesn’t care about her and tbh it’s quite funny that people want her to care. Why should she?

It’s so crazy they are both more successful in their 50’s than they could’ve ever expected given the time they blew up in history, they both won and have done it against the odds. **** Tommy, I don’t know her. 1
Yudelkis Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Mariah and some her fans (not all, as you see @Slap or @stevyy know how to separate things) must realize that Lola & Mimi are working in one and the same industry : Same management team from L.A Reid, Diddy to Benny and Tommy... Same friends from Randy to Maxwell and Tyler Perry... Same producers from Darkchild, Durpri, Timbo, Mustard, Hit-Boy, Danja... Same writers from Cory Rooney, Diane Warren to The Dream... Same collabs from Mary J Blige, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Ja Rule, French Montana, Nas... Same labels from Sony Music (Colombia + Epic) to Island Def Jam... Same business projects from American Idol to Fragancies... Same entertainment projects from Movies to Books and Vegas Residencies.. Same commercials projects from Gillette to Pepsi... Same photographers, hairstylist, and fashion designer from Oribes Canales, David Lachappelle to Donatella Versace... and of course the same medias creating dramas over the years from Showbizz411 (Roger Friedman), Perez, Wendy to Andy Cohen. Side note : Both born the same year in New York. Then there will always be comparisons and some must accept this rather than criticizing one or the other. As a J.Lover, it's always sad or tiring to read negative things or to think about what opposes them rather than what unites them but today Lambs under 25 or 30 seek to rewrite the story on social medias (Ashanti Blah-Blah, I don't know her Blah-Blah, If I had the luxury Blah-Blah) on each Jennifer new project so I'm use to that now and keep enjoying the work of my fav. 2 1
Yudelkis Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Now, my personal opinion : I always been a big J.L fan and my best friend was and still is a M.C one. I remember us buying TIMT & Charm' around the same month and exchanging K7 in 2002 : just enjoying both ladies records. We are older now but what a time, imagine fighting back in the daywith my bestie like Twitter stans? Side note : I'm requesting an AI cover of Broken Like Me by Mariah or feat Mariah @insomniac, please. Ps : I still believe one day they could be friend, I mean Mariah was friend with Stella Bulochnikov and now she's friend with Kim Kardashian, so let me believe it. 1
CosTaSsSs Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I think Tommy was the fault they put these women against. Mariah is an amazing vocalist and a great singer, while Jennifer has the charisma and talent of a performer. They are very different, but with so many similarities at the same time. They have the BEST feel-good music with tracks such as (Heartbreaker, I'm Real, Touch My Body, Get Right etc.) It's tiring having these two "fighting" against each other all the time. People act like Ashanti was the only female to be used as a background vocalist, while Rihanna and Bey and almost anyone did this but they go unnoticed. Also, I feel because people believe she relies a lot to her beauty and body, they feel "jealous" so they hate her. In psychology matters, whenever we hate something with passion we see things in other that we have and hate or wish we had.. so I guess that may answer a lot of things. 1 1

Tommy was the boss and they were the employees, so it's not his fault, they signed a contract. I still can't believe Tommy forced her to record Play ASAP, when she didn't like the song. Imagine being 31 and your CEO ask you to fly to Sweden to record a teen pop song. 1

stevyy Posted March 2 Posted March 2 The most shocking revelation from her Memoir - to me - was the incident when Tommy Mottola would put a butter knife to Mariah's face threatening her after she had told him that she was out of the relationship / marriage. That's such a d!ck, mafia move (like in a movie). One of J.Lo's later producers confirmed the story as he was present. If my memory serves me right, it was Coey Rooney. And he had the audacity to mock the situation and make fun of Mariah and that that happened to her in a freaking instagram post in 2020. Mariah what Mariah said later on about J.Lo was rude or uncalled for... or.... maybe Mariah is just a woman who went through a life changing situation and was still traumatized at that point. I choose to believe that Mariah was and continues to be deeply hurt by all these things that went down in the late 90s and early 2000s. However, the GP is very fickle with whom they put blame on. Like, they blame Mariah for her siblings struggles. They blame her for her commercial downfall in 2001. She simply cannot win with some people. Some even look entirely the other way, unwilling to see both sides. That's also currently happening in politics btw. If everyone is innocent and never did anything wrong, we would not have any feuds to begin with, unless we paint a very negative picture about certain people's characters. I for one do not believe that Mariah is a monster, J.Lo is neither. What it caused was that J.Lo and Mariah never found the opportunity to bond and that I find unfortunate for the two. 1 1
