CosTaSsSs Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Both were really impactful in their own ways. Don't forget that Jenny was 29 when she started her music career. She broke the barriers in so many ways and yet people try to find ways to shade her with all these Mariah and Ashanti things. I feel most of the times people are jealous of her and envy makes them mean, I can't explain why people hate her so much. lol

I've seen it all on this site skdjndckdck OT: I don't know about Jlo but Britney is respected anywhere outside of ATRL, and especially by music critics these days. It's unfair to compare the artists who came out in times when critics were heavily rock-leaning and scathed albums if they included a hint of pop. Teenage pop artists and bands like Britney, and NSYNC* were viewed as the downfall of music by critics and pretentious audiophiles at the time, and you expect the epitome of 1990s and y2k pop, Britney Spears to be viewed in a respectful light by those critics? If Taylor Swift put out any of her music in those times, she'd just be passed off as a watered-down Joni Mitchell (Folklore, Evermore), and run-of-the-mill pop star (1989, Lover). This was simply the story for all pop artists unless you were Madonna, George Michael, MJ, or Prince. Poptimism wasn't a major phenomenon way up till the 2010s. In The Zone, and Blackout were exceptional bodies of work that despite years of retrospective acclaim, still do not receive the due appreciation they deserve for the degree of influence they have contributed to pop music. Didn't Weeknd cite the former album as an inspiration for his critically revered effort 'Dawn FM'? Even if we exclude those albums, songs like Baby One More Time, Oops!...I Did It Again, YDMC, are pop songs that have received lots of flowers from critics when modern pop is discussed. The visuals, performances, and music of Britney has greatly changed pop and she is recognized for it. I implore you to do some research on the same network you use to access ATRL to put out futile and reductive topics like this. Edited February 28 by Blackout2006 3 1

But the world is on the edge of their seat for Rihanna’s album, and not Britney’s. What is this comparison. First and foremost, the grounds for this comparison are already imbalanced. You are talking of Britney's last album put out nearly two decades into her career, and Rihanna's last album put out after merely passing ten years into her career. If you want this ridiculous narrative to make sense, you need to compare Britney's eleventh year in music to Rihanna's, which was in 2009, and Britney very MUCH had people anticipating her album after the tumultuous period she endured during the mid-2000s. In fact, she had just put out an album a few months earlier and it earned over 800,000 sales in its first week globally and scored two hits for her. Edited February 28 by Blackout2006 1

I am sure she would’ve been thrilled had she won Best New Artist like she wanted. The award is still seen as something desired by artists because they are voted by their peers. The majority of her peers have zero Grammys, let alone one Grammy like Britney does. Ultimately, Britney is going to go down as a Grammy-winning artist so does it matter? 1

That decision eventually led to budget cuts (given that she was a new artist at the time) but still went on and do it. The wardrobe used in the MV did not cost more than 20 bucks a piece. The music video remains to be one of the most iconic music videos of all time. Britney conceptualized the entire music video for (You Drive Me) Crazy Britney conceptualized the Oops! I Did It Again music video Britney personally met with multiple artists and producers while developing "In the Zone" as a complete and 180-degree departure not only of her image but her music. She had significant creative inputs in the development of the album which is now considered as one of her greatest bodies of work. Britney fought with Jive executives to release both Me Against the Music and Toxic as singles. Toxic eventually paid off and became not only one of her most recognizable tracks but one of the most acknowledged and acclaimed pop track. Britney pitched the idea of being a secret agent and the nude-diamond scene in the Toxic music video and also conceptualized the music video for Everytime Britney executive produced Blackout, which is highly regarded as her best work and one of the most influential pop albums Britney conceptualized the Womanizer music video Britney was heavily involved in the concept of her most recent studio album "Glory" Aside from her debut album, Britney has writing credits in all her studio albums ATRLers keep on throwing names at Britney such as "label puppet" or "no involvement" or "industry plant" but the fact remains that without her inputs, she wouldn't be the pop star that she is right now. Of course there's lack of involvement during the Conservatorship period. You wouldn't expect her to put her career first when she is fighting to keep her kids. Also like what I previously mentioned, she is respected within the industry. Even the greats speak highly of her. May the misinformation now rest in peace. Amen. Yes, yes, YES! It's so tiring to see the usual suspects ignore these and yap about these misconceptions from time immemorial. She loved to experiment and that one thing ill give her credit for, especially in the zone, breathe on me, dont hang up, early morning, toxic, heaven on earth etc are not songs you typically hear on the radio, i remember christina saying she wouldve loved to do BOM Ten, ten, ten across the board! 💯💯 On 2/27/2024 at 7:56 PM, Storm653 said: Britney went Diamond twice in the peak of album sales though. She peaked early and saw a steady decline in CD sales beyond 2001. Oh, I see! Now...Drop the names of her peers besides Spice Girls who have even one diamond-certified album, let alone two, QUICK. Quote Beyonce has basically outsold her as a solo act since 2003 when she first debuted. Britney's sales are heavily under-certified though. Edited February 28 by Blackout2006
Jay07 Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Of course people are waiting for Britney's next album, she just sold millions of copies of her book and had a top ten hit song last year. And that's after being completely inactive for 8 years, being an act that debuted in the 90s and having her celebrity and creativity destroyed for years because of those greedy ghouls in charge. Put some respect on her name. 4

Getting something like a Grammy was far, far more harder for a pop artist in a few fields a few years ago. I can't be bothered to comb through this whole thread to see if someone already pointed this out, but this bit makes zero sense to me lol She took home awards for The Fame in January of 2010. Pop has been taken seriously for a long time, but usually only when it comes from people who have a direct hand in their work, sing live, write and play instruments and before you say it, Britney using Brahms' Lullaby for that one song she wrote doesn't count

No one's denying that Britney had an impressive streak from 99-01. We're just comparing legacies. Britney having a huge peak in 99-01 isn't going to overshadow Beyonce staying relevant/dominant for multiple decades, having numerous acclaimed albums, having a stellar Superbowl halftime, having an iconic Coachella performance, and remaining a massive touring force for years to come. The poster I was responding to was saying that Britney will have a bigger legacy than Beyonce because she went Diamond 24-25 years ago. But that's just not the case.

You can buy Grammys and you can buy magazine reviews, but you can’t buy genuine impact. Britney’s formula is still closely followed today and she has some of the most impactful eras ever. Beyoncé’s a great artist and incredibly talented, but she doesn’t have the same impact and is always chasing trends instead of setting them (running to Spanglish in 2007, getting on the house/gay lingo trend in 2022, etc.). My god

I understand that, but I've just got so used to hearing this being brought up when her peers were only selling half of her. Britney herself brought it up when Avril's debut album was considered huge despite having sold as much as Britney's third record which was deemed an underperformance in the US. Britney and Beyonce went on completely different paths post-2005. While Beyonce was assuming more creative control in her artistry, Britney had just started and then immediately got shoved back into a box by the conservatorship. It's always one of pop culture's biggest what-ifs. Nevertheless, both of their legacies are truly remarkable and cannot be denied by some pressed members on a random forum. Teenage Dream was a great era but by no means would it have been considered for AOTY just a few years prior. As for them only considering writers and live singers, there’s plenty of artists who couldn’t replicate their studio vocals and had no hands in their writing that won prior. Further, Mariah Carey wrote all her music and sung everything live even better than the recordings and she was constantly overlooked. Someone like Gaga got awarded for the time.
Mr. Stratus Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Britney nor JLo as a talent isn’t taken seriously no. Jlo has gotten there more-so with her acting. ATRL is a delusion echo chamber for Britney, esp as they work hard to discredit other females. When Britney albums make those lists, like the RS one that’s being mentioned, even then feels like it’s praising the effort from the team behind them and not Britney’s own artistic merit. Neither Jlo and Britney are critical juggernauts and Brit has been hugely over-shadowed by Gaga/Bey, and Jlo Mariah/Shakira. Esp as they became the face of tabloids in the 2000’s. However, they still have a place in industry, and are beloved by many. This could actually be seen as impressive in itself vs. Looking at their blatant lack of acclaim as a negative, if you were to flip the switch.
