Phaunzie Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Padam Padam. Personally, I hate that song and the gays that love it. Rain on Me. the music video and the song are great tho. Wish 911 followed the cyberpunk theme. 1
swissman Posted February 21 Posted February 21 (edited) 12 hours ago, almanac said: I love Kylie Minogue but yeah... it is ridiculously overrated by gays in general as well. Imagine if the song was recorded by Rita Ora like it almost was, the same gays who worship the song would be saying it's trash. But songs aren't just what they are on paper, it's what the singer brings to them, especially in pop where a popstar's charisma and take on a song can really make or break it. Rita lacks both the inherent ability to carry camp without being eaten up by it, as well as the cool, icy kind of vocals to pull off a song that as silly as it is and sonically icy in production. Saying that if Rita recorded it, it wouldn't have the same reaction by gays is absolutely true, but not just because of a bias but because there's no way Rita would have carried off it in the same way. swissman Posted February 21 Posted February 21 I'm really not sure many of the comments here are answering the OP though. The question is whose SUCCESS is overrated. Not which songs were successful that you don't like.
Rotunda Posted February 21 Posted February 21 Why is BMS being mentioned, I thought it was pretty accepted the song came and went?
Summer Boy Posted February 21 Posted February 21 If anything, Rain On Me's success is underrated on ATRL. It was huge WW, it even has a Gold certification in Japan. OT : I would say Padam Padam. It did good for Kylie's standard tho. 2
Mr. Stratus Posted February 21 Posted February 21 (edited) Toxic by Britney definitely, atrl act like it’s in poker face and rolling in the deep territory cause of its recurrent streams . It was yet another poor charting 15-20 week Britney hit at its time. Edited February 22 by Mr. Stratus 2

But if there is no way to determine "overrated" without being subjective, then why go deeper into subjective discussion by simply naming successful songs you think are overrated? Not only is that not the ask of this thread, but it's far less objective than bringing up a song whose statistical markers of success do not match the greater perception of that song as a success. If anything, this thread is asking us to objectively look at statistics to determine this, but people instead seem to just be giving their subjective opinions on song quality.

VioletsandRoses Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Toxic. Yes it came out when digital sales were just starting, but it still sold much less than the top selling songs from 2004/2005. Bring Me To Life, Crazy in love, yeah, hallowback girls, etc. Womanizer. Only 7.5m sales and okay streams when most smashes sold 11-13m in 2008. Shallow, has good WW numbers but it was a weak hit in the US. Plus I’ve seen a lot of monsters claim it’s her biggest hit which is delusional WBT. Low sales for a smash. Less than Pon De Replay both US and WW which wasn’t a smash really. Let alone other smashes from 2005 like You’re Beautiful which are at 10m copies. Blank Space- great numbers in certain numbers but not the ww smash Swifties make it out to be. SIO will be her most global and biggest song.

Britney stans coming in here to speak on other artists when all their faves #1s from 08-11 are like these frontloaded forgotten messes. Typical.
