Why did Perfect Illusion perform so poorly?

Maybe it was too ahead of its time for certain people.

I think the melody and the key she sings should have been "soften" to be more radio friendly.

That being said, the song is quite great on its own and sounds like one of its kind.

All her solo releases since 2011 that weren't attached to that Bradley Cooper movie performed abysmally.

Imagine thinking Applause and Million Reasons weren't big hits:rip: Both are 4 or 5xPlat in the US, bigger than some "smashes" at the time:rip:

Neither are big hits. Million Reasons completely missed the year end chart despite being propelled by a Superbowl performance while Applause has atrocious recurrent stats.

Applause has 400K daily streams on Spotify, on par with songs like We Can't Stop, that is far from "atrocious". Million Reasons has more streams than songs like Truth Hurts, which is a number 1 hit:rip: Like it or not, both were big hits. Deal with it.

And that's without getting into their parent albums. The bar is in hell for the singer-turned-actress.

It's still my 2nd fave lead after Bad Romance and I'll always wish for more songs like that from her. People often criticize the "screams" when that's literally what makes the song :skull: but the reason it was never gonna be a hit though. Th Kevin demo is a whole other vibe that does not fit Gags imo.

Also the entire musical landscape simply wasn't favorable for the song to be a hit imo, which is why the fact that Interscope thought it was "lead single worthy" is still mind-boggling to me. You got The Chainsmokers taking over the charts, Rap/Hip-Hop smashing, Trap-Pop on the rise, and.....you think this disco/rock song with shouty vocals was gonna be hit for Gaga? After ARTPOP?

Second favorite lead after Bad Romance when Just Dance is right there....

I like it but It builds up to nothing, theres no big pay off or anything it needed a strronger chorus

Because it wasn’t lead single material, it was a perfect illusion :gaynetcat4:

I like it but I see why people might not have.  It's a bit abrasive and not the best "lead single"/radio friendly option.  She was also still kind of in the process of rebuilding her status in the industry.

I've always been a fan of the song but I can understand how someone could not like it and it's lack of mainstream appeal. Doesn't matter to me, it's a bop in my mind.

It’s Gaga screaming on a disco-rock beat while everyone else was doing tropical house and EDM. What did you expect exactly?
