Adele easily retained her “Rolling in the Deep” wins in the 2012 poll, securing more than 65% of the vote in both categories.

In 2013, the Grammys obviously jumped at the chance to nominate a bunch of indie songs that were genuine smashes. Gotye took home Record of the Year for “Somebody That I Used to Know.” He wasn’t eligible for Song of the Year, though, so that went home with Jack Antonoff and friends for “We Are Young.”

But pop stars still had a strong showing in the field—none “Stronger” than Kelly Clarkson with her first general field nomination. Carly Rae Jepsen called us, maybe, but the Grammy voters didn’t call her back. Ed Sheeran made “The A Team” with his debut single (and still career-best song), and Taylor Swift suspiciously expanded the Record lineup to six nominees with her first Max Martin collaboration... like ever. (Gotye called WANEGOD the best nominee, proving that some indie dudes contain multitudes [not Jake Gyllenhaal]).

We Are Young is one of the worst songs of the decade and possibly the worst SOTY winner. I voted for Carly (it's an expertly crafted pop song and I'm a homo) but Adorn You would have also been good out of the nominees.

Gotye deserved ROTY, he cracked something amazing with that song. Timeless

SOTY: Should've been Adorn or CMM.

I feel like in a perfect world Call Me Maybe would've taken Record of The Year and Somebody That I Used To Know would've won Song of The Year.

I voted Gotye/Kimbra for ROTY and Carly for SOTY because imo they deserve the most from their categories. But also I feel like STIUTK is better suited for a SOTY win an CMM is better suited for a ROTY win.

Pretty decent selection actually. We Are Young kinda aged but it's still cute. WANEGBT is probably top 5 Taylor. Great Miguel, Black Keys & Frank songs too. The way AOTY happened this year was the one big mistake :rip:

Gotye - “Somebody That I Used To Know (feat. Kimbra)” for Record of the Year. He should have been eligible for SOTY too, but under the rules for the 2013 awards, he was not allowed to submit the song, because it contained a sample.

The rule was changed the following year.

very upset to miss the 2012 voting but glad Adele did what she had to do!

2013 has the weirdest lineup to me so far (or at least among like the three most weirdest)- especially with the 6 nods for ROTY instead of the regular 5. Taylor's song is cute but generally a skip on a day where I have less patience with her, never heard the black keys song and "we are young" is 2012 in a nutshell and i still cant find myself to hate it but I know for sure I dont LOVE it. Im upset Gotye song couldnt be in both categories at it was rightfully the best song of the year easily and a timeless classic, but since I needed a second best choice, I gave it to Ed for SOTY. might not be the first time he gets my votes in that category too.

ROTY ranking

  1. Somebody that i used to know
  2. thinkin bout you
  3. stronger
  4. we are never ever getting back together
  5. we are young
  6. lonely boy

SOTY ranking

  1. The A Team
  2. stronger
  3. call me maybe
  4. adorn
  5. we are young
